Message to Taylor Green

Bestowal dialogue

'Supplies here in Archet are limited and will certainly not suffice to repair the damage wrought upon the village. Now that I have my tools, I will be able to begin shoring the fences and repairing the buildings where I can.
'Archet will need more lumber if it is to recover completely from this attack. If you find yourself in Combe, to the south, seek out Taylor Green and let him know that I will need another order of wood from the lumber yard.
'If you've not been there before, listen well. The Combe Lumber Yard can be found by following the road south. Pass through the gate toward Combe and follow the road east up the hill. It will bend softly to the north east towards the Chetwood. There, in a soft dip before the North Chetwood you should find Taylor Green.'

Background

Earur wishes to aid the people of Archet and believes that there are enough supplies to begin the rebuilding process. To ensure that supplies do not dwindle too quickly he directed you to visit Taylor Green at the Combe Lumber Yard.

Objective 1

Tell Taylor Green at the Lumber Mill in Combe that Builder Earur needs more wood in Archet.
Builder Earur mentioned that Archet would need more wood to completely rebuild. He asked you to visit the Combe Lumber Yard and tell Taylor Green that Archet needs more wood.
Builder Earur: 'Hurry along now. I'll get to work on what I can, but the lumber will not last long. Find Taylor Green at the Lumber yard east and north from the centre of Combe.'
Taylor Green: 'Archet's woes did not escape us here in Combe, and it's good what Earur is doing, no doubt in that. But the evil of the Blackwold has spread and now rests in the same wood where we need to collect the wood for Archet.
'I will see that we do what we can, but as you can see, we've troubles of our own.'

Beneath the Hanging Tree

Bestowal dialogue

'Me old dad was a robber some years back and got his hands on a good deal o' riches, as I hear it. Constable caught him, but afore he was hanged, me dad told me where he buried his loot! I never needed it afore now, so I was content to let it stay buried. But I figure it's time to get my hands on "wealth enough to keep you warm and shod," as me dear old dad called it. Can you take this pick-axe and dig the treasure up?
'Just take the road east from Combe to Constable Wren's post up by the guard-house. Climb over the hill on the right and walk down to the riverbank, where the Hanging Tree grows -- it'll have an X carved into it.
'You'll be helping me make a new start of things, and you'll have me everlasting thanks!'

Background

Ted Pickthorn has found himself near penniless and in desperate straits. Rumour of his father's stolen wealth has brought him some hope, however.

Objective 1

  • Find the Hanging Tree
The Hanging Tree sits along the riverbank south of Constable Wren's post, south-east of Combe.
Ted Pickthorn's father was once a robber in the Chetwood and had purportedly garnered a significant amount of wealth. Ted believes his father's ill-gotten gains are buried at the foot of the Hanging Tree. The tree is supposed to be marked with an X.
Ted Pickthorn: 'There arey many other trees around the Hanging Tre. There were more hangings in those days, and they didn't want children seeing too much, so the surrounding trees helped to hid ehte robber-hangings from young eyes.
'Take the road east out of Combe, and at Constable Wren's post, head south. The Hanging Tree is on the downward slope of the hill south of the guard-house, on the bank of te river. You'll kno wit by the X carved into it.'
The grove of trees has been cleared

Objective 2

  • Dig near stumps in the stump field (0/3)
Although there is no way to tell which stump was once the Hanging Tree, it can't hurt to dig near a few of the stumps in search of the treasure.
You find nothing of note near this stump (x 3)

Objective 3

Ted Pickthorn can be found on the east side of Combe.
Ted Pickthorn sent you to retrieve his father's loot from beneath the Hanging Tree, but you discovered that the tree, among others, was chopped down by the woodcutters of Combe. You dug at several places on the field, but found no sign of Pickthorn's buried treasure.
Ted Pickthorn: 'What? They chopped down the Hanging Tree? And ye dug at all the trees with an X? This is terrible! How will I ever find me dad's buried treasure now?'

Finding Reason

Bestowal dialogue

'Them spiders have et my workhands and driven me and Holly out of our home. There's got to be some way to get 'em off our land!
'I would think that Atli Spider-bane might know more about spiders than I do. Perhaps you should go speak with him again.
'We can't return home until those awful things are gone!'

Background

Cal Sprigley's farm has been overrun by spiders for no apparent reason, leaving Cal and Holly homeless in Archet.

Objective 1

Atli Spider-bane can be found just north of Cal Sprigley.
Cal Sprigley suggested that you speak with Atli Spider-bane about the spiders at his farm and how to be rid of them.
Cal Sprigley: 'Them spiders came up through my shed on the far end of the farm, but you should speak with Atli before going there again. He'll know more about what to do, I'm sure.'
Atli Spider-bane: 'Good, you have returned! It seems there is much more going on here than I first thought. While you were away, my cousin Bali arrived, and I sent him to search some caves in the ruins outside the east wall of Archet. A few of the hunters had dropped a huge stone in front of the cave, and I wanted him to ensure the stone remained. He has not yet returned, and I am worried.
'Now, from what you told me of Sprigley's troubles, the spiders came up through the cellar in his shed. Perhaps seeing the cave blocked off, they tunnelled up through there.
'We won't know for certain, though, until you find Bali. Hopefully he'll have some answers.'

Objective 2

  • Search for Bali
The entrance to the cave the hunters blocked off lies in the ruins due east of Archet.
Atli told you that he sent his cousin Bali to check the caves, but he has not yet returned. If you find him, he may have the answer to what has disturbed the spiders.
Atli Spider-bane: 'Go find Bali quickly before something terrible happens! I sent him to the caves in the ruins due east of here.'
Cal Sprigley: 'I don't think I can help you. Atli's cousin must be around that cave somewhere.'
BaliYou search Bali's corpse and find a journal with several pages missing. The journal text reads:
I would not believe it, but the spiders have pushed the cave mouth clear! I have entered the cave, and the spiders reacted to me instantly, as if drawn to me. I am unsure why. I spent my day carefully searching near the entrance only and found several corpses bound into cocoons. These spiders seem to wrap everything up into their cocoons! I will write more tomorrow whan I go further into the cave.
Perhaps it would be best to enter the cave to see if you can find the rest of the journal pages before returning to Atli.

Objective 3

  • Find missing journal pages (0/5)
The missing pages of Bali's journal must be somewhere within the caves. The spiders may have taken the missing pages and webbed them into their cocoons.
You have found Bali's corpse and his journal, but the journal is missing several pages. You need to find the pages before returning to Atli.
Atli Spider-bane: 'Bali…dead? This is…impossible! And the spiders have pushed the cave open? You must enter the cave and search for the rest of his journal.
'We must avenge Bali, and that journal may hold the knowledge that will help us do that!'
DAY 2
I've gone further into the cave today. There seems to be no end to the twists and turns or the spiders in this area. I have done my best not to get lost, but I fear I may already be there.
I still have no idea why these spiders are here. There are several larger queen-like spiders here, but I do not think they are steering this brood.
I will look more tomorrow. For now, I have found a rock to sleep behind. I hope these spiders don't like the taste of dwarf.
DAY 3
My third day in this spider-infested hole has come and gone, and I got no further today. I think I may have gone around in several circles since I found the rock I slept behind three times today. I'm not sure if this place has an end but I found an interesting-looking cellar of some small supply shed. I peeked outside and found an overrun farm. That did not seem to be my answer either.
Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day. I think I will spend my night in the cellar. It may be a little safer.
DAY 4
I went back into the caves, but had little more luck than before. I know I am missing a turn someplace that will lead me closer to the queen's nest and hopefully an answer to the spiders' presence here.
I suspect these are no ordinary spiders, for as I even now prepare to sleep, I dream I can hear whispered voices.
DAY 5
It is my fifth day within these dismal tunnels, and I am no closer to finding the queen. I have no doubts, however, as to the intelligence of these creatures. They hunt me now, day and night, though I elude them still.
It is strange, but I believe I heard one of the beasts mention Spider-bane.
DAY 6
There is no doubt now. These spiders and their queen are here for Atli Spider-bane. They seek to use me as a bait for Atli, but I will not give them that leverage.
My axe will drink of their blood ere this night is through. I will not...

Objective 4

  • Bring the journal and journal pages to Atli Spider-bane
Atli Spider-bane can be found at the north end of Archet.
Atli Spider-bane will want to know what you discovered amongst the pages of Bali's journal.
Atli Spider-bane: 'I cannot believe it. Bali...gone. He must be avenged! And this journal tells me what is behind this: a spider-queen from the Blue Mountains. She and her brood must have followed me from Thorin's Halls.
'Know this! Even if I am slain, she will never leave this place... she has found easy prey here. We must destroy her, or Archet shall become a new abode for the queen and her spawn.'

The Wrath of the Elves

Bestowal dialogue

'The goblins have slain my son, <name>, and for that we will sweep them from Ered Luin! No goblin will take as much as three steps into these lands before we are there to greet him with swordblade or arrowhead!
'Go forth and slay goblins wherever you find them and cry aloud the name of Avorthal. I would have the foul creatures know whose doom has come upon them!
'While you were gone, word came to me that Limael's Vinyard has been defiled by goblins led by a vile creature called Pampraush. Seek out Pampraush and his minions and slay them in the name of Avorthal! Limael's Vinyard lies north-west of Celondim.'

Background

From all appearances, goblins waylaid Avorthal in Tham Gelair, leaving no trace of him but his satchel.

Objective 1

Pampraush and his minions are in Limael's Vinyard, north-west of Celondim.
The apparent death of Avorthal has enraged Cardavor against the goblins. He has asked you to seek out a band of goblins led by a creature named Pampraush and slay them all in Avorthal's name.
Cardavor: 'Limael's Vinyard is to the north-west of Celondim, on the high-ground above the harbour. I will not be satisfied until you have avenged my son's death.'
Pampraush says, "If you're looking for the Elf-prince, you're too late! The dwarves have him now!"
Defeated Pampraush

Objective 2

Cardavor is at Celondim, the harbour south-east of Limael's Vinyard.
You sought out the goblin Pampraush and his minions as Cardavor requested, but learned from Pampraush that Avorthal may still be alive as a prisoner of dwarves. Cardavor should be told at once.
Cardavor: 'What is this? Pampraush said that my son still lives? Avorthal was not slain? My heart wants to believe...but believe the words of a goblin? Still, I cannot fathom why he would tell you this if it were not so.
'But if Avorthal is alive, then his capture does not bode well. I fear he will not live long while imprisoned by those outcast dwarves. They are no better than the goblins!'

Herding Cats

Bestowal dialogue

'The lynx that roam the hills in the Vale of Thrain have become bold with hunger in recent months. There have even been reports of them attacking unwary travellers! I have the unwelcome task of dealing with these beasts, but there are too many for me to handle alone.
'Grimkell has ordered me to take care of the problem, but I could use your help. We must teach the beasts to fear the bite of metal again and keep to four-legged game.
'Head to the north, along the road back to Thorin's Hall. Look to the west side of the road, near the Thrushstones, and you will find lynx in great numbers.'

Background

Óláfr needs help dealing with the lynx in Thrain's Vale.

Objective 1

Lynx can be found throughout the Vale of Thráin, but Óláfr suggested heading north to theThrushstones.
Óláfr has asked you to secure the safety of the road leading through the Vale of Thráin by hunting the lynx that dwell there.
Óláfr: 'Please help me out by hunting the lynx in the area.'

Objective 2

Óláfr is at Noglond in Thrain's Vale, south along the road from the Thrushstones.
Óláfr should be pleased to hear of your success.
Óláfr: 'Good work with those vicious cats. Perhaps now lone travellers will have less to fear in this land. Grimkell will be pleased, for a change.'

Goblins in the South

Bestowal dialogue

'It is unthinkable that these goblins managed to sneak into the Vale of Thráin under my very beard. Well, there's nothing to do about it now but prepare for the worst.
'I need you to take the fetish you found to Bolli, the Captain of the Guard in Gondamon to the east. He must know of the goblin's incursion from the valley into Vale of Thráin.
'I've no doubt this is a sign of a larger threat.'

Background

You raided the goblin encampment in the Vale of Thráin and slew their chieftain, but the threat still looms over the peoples of Ered Luin.

Objective 1

  • Bring the goblin fetish to Bolli
Bolli is at Gondamon, east of Noglond.
Grímkell has asked you to take the goblin fetish to Bolli, the Captain of the Guard at Gondamon, and warn him of the threat the goblins pose.
Grímkell: 'That fetish must be brouht to Gondamon with all haste. Proof of the goblin threat must be seen by the Captain of the Guard himself.'
Bolli: 'You carry with you a fetish of the Blue Crag goblin tribes. It's clear that the vile creatures are on the move and intend to launch an offensive against the Vale of Thráin. Troubling news, to be sure.
'We must crush the goblin forces before they become an even greater threat. Their presence in the Vale is a festering blight on the land and if we don't stop it now, it will spread like a shadow across the land.'

Villains in the Vale

Bestowal dialogue

'I think I know what's going on. There are some sprawling old ruins just south-west of here. I think the goblins have occupied those ruins.
'I'd be sorry to have to send a message up to Thorin's Halls or off to Gondamon for help. I guess I'd feel like Vífill must have. They would laugh and leave it lie.
'I wonder if you and some friends, perhaps, could deal with these goblins? If you could raid their camp in those ruins and defeat their chieftain, I wouldn't have to ask for help from elsewhere. I'd gather some allies, though -- the camp is likely to be well-guarded.'

Background

Grímkell thinks the goblins have occupied a large ruin, a former Dourhand city, to the south-west of Noglond.

Objective 1

The Blue-crag Chieftain is at the large goblin camp in ruins to the south-west of Noglond.
Embarrassed by his previous skepticism, Grímkell has asked you to raid the goblins in their camp and slay their chieftain. He suggested you take allies.
Grímkell: 'Search the goblin-camp in the ruins to the south-west for the Blue Crag Chieftain and put him out of our misery.'
Defeated the Blue-crag Chieftain

Objective 2

Grímkell is in Noglond, north-east of the goblin encampment.
You should return to Grímkell with news of your victory.
Grímkell: 'Ha! Good work. I'm sorry I ever doubted Vífill, but who would have known that goblins would actually dare to enter the Vale of Thráin?'

Hunting Goblins

Bestowal dialogue

'I don't doubt Vífill made up his story of goblins after hitting himself with his own axe!
'Oh? You think he told the truth? Not likely! But if you're so sure he's met up with goblins, maybe you can go find them.
'The goblins of the Blue Mountains sometimes carry these little things, fetishes I guess you might call them. Bring me one of their fetishes, and maybe I'll lend Vífill's tale my ear.'

Background

Grímkell scoffed at Vífill's story of goblins in the Vale of Thráin, blaming Vífill's injury instead upon his own clumsiness.

Objective 1

Vífill said there were goblins south of his camp.
Grímkell told you he would only be convinced of Vífill's tale if you could bring him an authentic goblin fetish.
Grímkell: 'No goblins, eh? I knew Vífill made it up.'
Vífill: 'What? He doesn't believe me? Well that beard-chewing…! Forget I said that. He's a good commander, just a bit contrary at times.
'I suppose that you'd best go find one of those fetishes Grímkell wants. There are goblins to the south of my camp and a bit to the west.'

Objective 2

Vífill said there were goblins south of his camp.
Grímkell told you he would only be convinced of Vífill's tale if you could bring him an authentic goblin fetish.
Grímkell: 'What's this? Oh….
'I must beg your pardon. It seems you and Vífill were right. Let's see now. Goblins in the Vale?'

Cutting Cords

Bestowal dialogue

'You there! I sent Vífill to cut a quarter-cord of firewood for Noglond, but he hasn't come back. See if you can find him.
'Just follow the road to the west. There's a clearing out that way where we gather our wood.
'Be wary though...who knows what's delayed Vífill.'

Background

Grímkell, the commander at Noglond, sent one of his guards, Vífill, to cut some firewood and is concerned because Vífill has failed to return.

Objective 1

Vífill is somewhere in the firewood grove down the road west of Noglond.
Grímkell has asked you to go out and search for Vífill.
Grímkell: 'Vífill still hasn't returned from the firewood grove just up the road.'
Vífill: 'Ha! Well met! I was wondering when Grímkell would send someone. I was in the clearing, cutting wood for Noglond, when goblins fell on me from the shadows of the trees.
'I managed to kill two and wounded the last, enough to drive it off, but was wounded myself in the fight. The foul creature ran off to the south. Tell Grímkell what happened and to send help!'

Objective 2

Grímkell is at Noglond, east of the firewood grove.
Vífill tells you to inform Grímkell of the presence of goblins in the firewood grove.
Vífill: 'I'll be fine…leave me. Grímkell must be told about the goblins immediately!'
Grímkell: 'Goblins, here in the Vale of Thráin? Nay, that's not likely. Surely not!'

A Feathered Nuisance

Bestowal dialogue

'Hendrevail have grown to alarming numbers over the past year and now the roads from Thorin's Hall all the way to Gondamon are unsafe.
'<name>, if you would lend your aid once more patrol the roads north and south from Noglond and hunt down any hendrevail you may find.
'Recent travlers through our outpost say they've seen large numbers of hendrevail across the river to our south. If you're looking for the source of their numbers, that's as likely to be it as not.'

Background

Vicious hendrevail plague the Vale of Thráin, making travel through the Vale unsafe.

Objective 1

The road runs northwards from Noglond through the Vale of Thráin to Thorin's Halls.
Ketill has asked you to patrol along the road through the Vale of Thráin and cull the numbers of hendrevail. He also mentioned that hendrevail could be found in large numbers south of the river to the south of Noglond.
Ketill: 'There are still hendrevail plaguing the roads. Continue your hunt for the birds and return to me when you have culled their numbers.'

Objective 2

Ketill is in Noglond, south of Thorin's Hall.
You should return to Ketill and report the results of your patrol.
Ketill: 'Thank you for helping keep the ways clear. If it's not too much to ask, please don't tell anyone that I needed help.'

Clear the Roads

Bestowal dialogue

'There was a time when our hunters kept the number of bears in check but alas, the beasts have grown numerous in recent years. It's shameful, really, that we have let the wild overrun our paths. As long as dwarves dwell here, the ways should be safe.
'If you want to be of help, patrol north from Noglond to Hunter's Notch and clear out any of the beasts you find.
'With your help, we will make the road safe once more.'

Background

Vicious bears have grown numerous and bold north of Noglond along the road through the Vale of Thráin, making travel through the Vale unsafe.

Objective 1

  • Defeat bears in the Vale of Thráin (0/8)
Hunter's Notch can be found north of Noglond.
Ketill has asked you to hunt bears in Hunter's Notch and cull their numbers.
Ketill: 'There are still wild and savage bears plaguing the roads. Continue your hunt for the beats and return to me when you've managed to cull their numbers.'

Objective 2

Ketill is in Noglond, south of Thorin's Hall.
You should return to Ketill and report the results of your patrol.
Ketill: 'Thank you for your help with the bears, thanks to you the road will be safe once more.'

The Second Gear

Bestowal dialogue

'That first gear has seen better days, but it's not beyond repair. I'll get to work on that, while you look for the second gear.
'According to the old records, the second gear was hidden in a chest in some old ruins to the south in the Vale of Thráin. The ruins are on the west side of the vale, off the road and across the Vale from Noglond. The records indicate that the chest is on the south side of the ruins.
'One thing you should be aware of, though, is that goblins have overrun those ruins. Be careful.'

Background

Bávor is an artificer tasked with repairing the great lock which opens access to the fabled Vault of the Mountain.

Objective 1

  • Find the missing second gear
The chest containing the second gear can be found on the south side of the goblin-infested ruins in the Vale of Thráin, south of Thorin's Halls and west of Noglond.
Bávor discovered the location of the second gear and has sent you to search for it, while he repairs the first gear.
Bávor: 'According to the old records, the second gear was hidden in a chest in some old ruins to the south in the vale of Thráin. The ruins are on the west side of the vale, off the road and across the Vale from Noglond. The records indicate that the chest is on the south side of the ruins.'
Found the missing second gear

Objective 2

Bávor is in Thorin's Hall.
Bávor will be pleased to begin working with the second gear.
Bávor: 'Aye! This is it! Wait...does this actually fit anywhere? How about there? Ah, I'll work it out eventually. For now, we must find the other gears!'

Quenching a Thirst

Bestowal dialogue

'The water has not been flowing down to Noglond for several days. I sent a message back to the Halls, but I've not received a reply from the builders. I'm not about to send one of my boys to do builder's work, and I can't have them traipsing to the river everytime we need water.
'Would you look into it? The canal runs all the way down the mountain from Thorin's Halls and to Gondamon below. The problem must be up-river from here.
'The above-ground part of the canal, the place that may be blocked, is south and west of here. Just take the road south to the bridge and look underneath it. Follow the canal all the way up to the big gate if you have to, just find the problem!'

Background

According to Geitir, the waterflow from the canal has been staunched for several days, and the builders have not replied to his message requesting assistance.

Objective 1

  • Discover the source of the canal's waterflow problem
The canal can be found south of Noglond, flowing down from Thorin's Halls.
Geitir asks you to investigate the flow of the canal to Noglond and learn the cause of the problem.
Geitir: 'Have you found the source of the problem?'
There are thickets clogging the canal

Objective 2

  • Clear away the thickets clogging the canal (0/8)
There are thickets blocking the canal between Noglond and Thorin's Halls.
Now that you have discovered the problem in the canal, you should clear away enough of the thickets to allow the water to flow more freely. There may be several patches of thickets along the canal.

Objective 3

Geitir is at Noglond to the north of the canal, south of Thorin's Halls.
You should return to Geitir with news of your success.
Geitir: 'Done already? Good work! We could use someone like you on the guard...better than these layabouts. Can I interest you in signing up? Oh, the pay's not that good, and you'll find yourself in some cold, out-of-the-way post like this, but it's a living. No? I thought not....
'Ah well, thanks for your work, anyway.'

The Flow to Noglond

Bestowal dialogue

'I've got some complaints from Noglond, down in the Vale of Thráin to the south, that the canal hasn't been flowing the way it should. Hopefully that repair you made to the leak has solved that problem, as well.
'Could you go down to Noglond and talk to Geitir about the problem? He can tell you if the canal is back to normal. Just follow the road south as it curves through the Vale of Thráin, and you will eventually come upon Noglond.
'With the Dourhands stirring up trouble, we are so short on workhands.'

Background

Tindr hopes the repairs to the canal in Thorin's Hall has restored the flow of water to Noglond, the way-station in the Vale of Thráin.

Objective 1

Geitir is in Noglond, south on the road from Thorin's Halls.
Tindr has asked you to speak with Geitir in Noglond to learn if the flow of water in the canal has returned to normal.
Tindr: 'Have you not been to Noglond yet?'
Geitir: 'Has the waterflow been restored? I should say not. It's just a trickle, really, when it should be a torrent!'

Return the Cask

Bestowal dialogue

'All filled and ready for delivery. I would like to thank you for your assistance, <name>, as I would not have been able to see this last bit of harvest along without you.
This cask is meant for another; however, I should like to see it sent along to my friend Bregedúr. It was he who sent it to me, after all...why should he not have the finest wine of the valley?
'If you would, take this back to him at Celondim. Follow the path to the east and turn towards the south-east across the bridge. You will find him at the crafters' market.'

Background

Brethilwen wishes to thank Bregedúr for his kindness.

Objective 1

Bregedúr spends his time at the crafters' market in Celondim.
Brethilwen crushed the grapes you collected into a fine wine and sent them on to her friend Bregedúr in Celondim.
Brethilwen: 'Take the cask to Bregedúr at the crafters' market in Celondim, south of here.'
Bregedúr: 'Thank you, <name>, and thank my friend Brethilwen for knowing my intentions. I understand that Brethilwen was beset by goblins and that you fought many off to obtain this spirit. Know that it was for a worthy cause.'
