Gondamon to Bree-town

Bestowal dialogue

'You've done good, <name>, but there's a whole wide world out there for you to explore. And if you want to start somewhere, Bree-town is as good as any place to start.
'Go east, until the Blue Mountains are far behind. It's a long journey so be sure to pack plenty of supplies. The Shire-folk may be able to offer you assistance on your travels.
'When you arrive in Bree, be sure and seek out the Mayor of the town. If there's work to be found, he'll know where to find it.'

Background

The time has come for you to venture beyond the mountains of Gondamon to find your fortune in the town of Bree.

Objective 1

Travel east from the Blue Mountains to the land called the Shire, then continue east along the road until you reach Bree-town.
Áskell suggested that you venture out of the Blue Mountains and see the world. Travel to Bree and speak to its Mayor once you arrive.
Áskell: 'Bree-town lies far to the east, beyond the Shire. When you get there, you should speak with the mayor, Graeme Tenderlarch.'
Mayor Graeme Tenderlarch: 'From the Blue Mountains, you say? Well, friend, that must have been quite and adventure. Welcome to Bree!'

Cave-claws in the Narrows

Bestowal dialogue

'We need to keep our enemies penned within Rath Teraig as best we may. The number of goblins seems to grow each day, but our stout barricades have been enough to keep them at bay.
'However, those vile Milkeye cave-claws have taken to creeping up and burrowing beneath the barricades in the deep of night and threaten to undermine the walls if we can't find a way to stop them.
'If you could hunt a number of the creatures down, it should serve to put a halt to their incessant digging and gain us time to repair any damage they've already done.'

Background

Tralli Hammerfist is concerned about the cave-claws burrowing beneath the barricades. Until recently, the barricades have been strong enough to withstand the goblin assaults, but the cave-claws have now weakened them.

Objective 1

Milkeyes can be found beyond the barricades south of the dwarf-camp.
Tralli Hammerfist has asked you to enter Rath Teraig and kill off a number of Milkeyes, to prevent them from gnawing at the barricades.
Tralli Hammerfist: 'The Milkeyes dwell south of the barricade, in the narrow passes within the valley.'

Objective 2

Tralli Hammerfist is at his camp beyond the barricade at the northern entrance to Rath Teraig.
You should return to Tralli Hammerfist and let him know that you have done as he asked.
Tralli Hammerfist: 'Well done, <name>! That should keep those vermin at bay for a while and give us a chance to patch up the barricades before the goblins have another try at us.'

Herding Cats

Bestowal dialogue

'The lynx that roam the hills in the Vale of Thrain have become bold with hunger in recent months. There have even been reports of them attacking unwary travellers! I have the unwelcome task of dealing with these beasts, but there are too many for me to handle alone.
'Grimkell has ordered me to take care of the problem, but I could use your help. We must teach the beasts to fear the bite of metal again and keep to four-legged game.
'Head to the north, along the road back to Thorin's Hall. Look to the west side of the road, near the Thrushstones, and you will find lynx in great numbers.'

Background

Óláfr needs help dealing with the lynx in Thrain's Vale.

Objective 1

Lynx can be found throughout the Vale of Thráin, but Óláfr suggested heading north to theThrushstones.
Óláfr has asked you to secure the safety of the road leading through the Vale of Thráin by hunting the lynx that dwell there.
Óláfr: 'Please help me out by hunting the lynx in the area.'

Objective 2

Óláfr is at Noglond in Thrain's Vale, south along the road from the Thrushstones.
Óláfr should be pleased to hear of your success.
Óláfr: 'Good work with those vicious cats. Perhaps now lone travellers will have less to fear in this land. Grimkell will be pleased, for a change.'

Goblins in the South

Bestowal dialogue

'It is unthinkable that these goblins managed to sneak into the Vale of Thráin under my very beard. Well, there's nothing to do about it now but prepare for the worst.
'I need you to take the fetish you found to Bolli, the Captain of the Guard in Gondamon to the east. He must know of the goblin's incursion from the valley into Vale of Thráin.
'I've no doubt this is a sign of a larger threat.'

Background

You raided the goblin encampment in the Vale of Thráin and slew their chieftain, but the threat still looms over the peoples of Ered Luin.

Objective 1

  • Bring the goblin fetish to Bolli
Bolli is at Gondamon, east of Noglond.
Grímkell has asked you to take the goblin fetish to Bolli, the Captain of the Guard at Gondamon, and warn him of the threat the goblins pose.
Grímkell: 'That fetish must be brouht to Gondamon with all haste. Proof of the goblin threat must be seen by the Captain of the Guard himself.'
Bolli: 'You carry with you a fetish of the Blue Crag goblin tribes. It's clear that the vile creatures are on the move and intend to launch an offensive against the Vale of Thráin. Troubling news, to be sure.
'We must crush the goblin forces before they become an even greater threat. Their presence in the Vale is a festering blight on the land and if we don't stop it now, it will spread like a shadow across the land.'

Villains in the Vale

Bestowal dialogue

'I think I know what's going on. There are some sprawling old ruins just south-west of here. I think the goblins have occupied those ruins.
'I'd be sorry to have to send a message up to Thorin's Halls or off to Gondamon for help. I guess I'd feel like Vífill must have. They would laugh and leave it lie.
'I wonder if you and some friends, perhaps, could deal with these goblins? If you could raid their camp in those ruins and defeat their chieftain, I wouldn't have to ask for help from elsewhere. I'd gather some allies, though -- the camp is likely to be well-guarded.'

Background

Grímkell thinks the goblins have occupied a large ruin, a former Dourhand city, to the south-west of Noglond.

Objective 1

The Blue-crag Chieftain is at the large goblin camp in ruins to the south-west of Noglond.
Embarrassed by his previous skepticism, Grímkell has asked you to raid the goblins in their camp and slay their chieftain. He suggested you take allies.
Grímkell: 'Search the goblin-camp in the ruins to the south-west for the Blue Crag Chieftain and put him out of our misery.'
Defeated the Blue-crag Chieftain

Objective 2

Grímkell is in Noglond, north-east of the goblin encampment.
You should return to Grímkell with news of your victory.
Grímkell: 'Ha! Good work. I'm sorry I ever doubted Vífill, but who would have known that goblins would actually dare to enter the Vale of Thráin?'

Hunting Goblins

Bestowal dialogue

'I don't doubt Vífill made up his story of goblins after hitting himself with his own axe!
'Oh? You think he told the truth? Not likely! But if you're so sure he's met up with goblins, maybe you can go find them.
'The goblins of the Blue Mountains sometimes carry these little things, fetishes I guess you might call them. Bring me one of their fetishes, and maybe I'll lend Vífill's tale my ear.'

Background

Grímkell scoffed at Vífill's story of goblins in the Vale of Thráin, blaming Vífill's injury instead upon his own clumsiness.

Objective 1

Vífill said there were goblins south of his camp.
Grímkell told you he would only be convinced of Vífill's tale if you could bring him an authentic goblin fetish.
Grímkell: 'No goblins, eh? I knew Vífill made it up.'
Vífill: 'What? He doesn't believe me? Well that beard-chewing…! Forget I said that. He's a good commander, just a bit contrary at times.
'I suppose that you'd best go find one of those fetishes Grímkell wants. There are goblins to the south of my camp and a bit to the west.'

Objective 2

Vífill said there were goblins south of his camp.
Grímkell told you he would only be convinced of Vífill's tale if you could bring him an authentic goblin fetish.
Grímkell: 'What's this? Oh….
'I must beg your pardon. It seems you and Vífill were right. Let's see now. Goblins in the Vale?'

Cutting Cords

Bestowal dialogue

'You there! I sent Vífill to cut a quarter-cord of firewood for Noglond, but he hasn't come back. See if you can find him.
'Just follow the road to the west. There's a clearing out that way where we gather our wood.
'Be wary though...who knows what's delayed Vífill.'

Background

Grímkell, the commander at Noglond, sent one of his guards, Vífill, to cut some firewood and is concerned because Vífill has failed to return.

Objective 1

Vífill is somewhere in the firewood grove down the road west of Noglond.
Grímkell has asked you to go out and search for Vífill.
Grímkell: 'Vífill still hasn't returned from the firewood grove just up the road.'
Vífill: 'Ha! Well met! I was wondering when Grímkell would send someone. I was in the clearing, cutting wood for Noglond, when goblins fell on me from the shadows of the trees.
'I managed to kill two and wounded the last, enough to drive it off, but was wounded myself in the fight. The foul creature ran off to the south. Tell Grímkell what happened and to send help!'

Objective 2

Grímkell is at Noglond, east of the firewood grove.
Vífill tells you to inform Grímkell of the presence of goblins in the firewood grove.
Vífill: 'I'll be fine…leave me. Grímkell must be told about the goblins immediately!'
Grímkell: 'Goblins, here in the Vale of Thráin? Nay, that's not likely. Surely not!'

A Feathered Nuisance

Bestowal dialogue

'Hendrevail have grown to alarming numbers over the past year and now the roads from Thorin's Hall all the way to Gondamon are unsafe.
'<name>, if you would lend your aid once more patrol the roads north and south from Noglond and hunt down any hendrevail you may find.
'Recent travlers through our outpost say they've seen large numbers of hendrevail across the river to our south. If you're looking for the source of their numbers, that's as likely to be it as not.'

Background

Vicious hendrevail plague the Vale of Thráin, making travel through the Vale unsafe.

Objective 1

The road runs northwards from Noglond through the Vale of Thráin to Thorin's Halls.
Ketill has asked you to patrol along the road through the Vale of Thráin and cull the numbers of hendrevail. He also mentioned that hendrevail could be found in large numbers south of the river to the south of Noglond.
Ketill: 'There are still hendrevail plaguing the roads. Continue your hunt for the birds and return to me when you have culled their numbers.'

Objective 2

Ketill is in Noglond, south of Thorin's Hall.
You should return to Ketill and report the results of your patrol.
Ketill: 'Thank you for helping keep the ways clear. If it's not too much to ask, please don't tell anyone that I needed help.'

Clear the Roads

Bestowal dialogue

'There was a time when our hunters kept the number of bears in check but alas, the beasts have grown numerous in recent years. It's shameful, really, that we have let the wild overrun our paths. As long as dwarves dwell here, the ways should be safe.
'If you want to be of help, patrol north from Noglond to Hunter's Notch and clear out any of the beasts you find.
'With your help, we will make the road safe once more.'

Background

Vicious bears have grown numerous and bold north of Noglond along the road through the Vale of Thráin, making travel through the Vale unsafe.

Objective 1

  • Defeat bears in the Vale of Thráin (0/8)
Hunter's Notch can be found north of Noglond.
Ketill has asked you to hunt bears in Hunter's Notch and cull their numbers.
Ketill: 'There are still wild and savage bears plaguing the roads. Continue your hunt for the beats and return to me when you've managed to cull their numbers.'

Objective 2

Ketill is in Noglond, south of Thorin's Hall.
You should return to Ketill and report the results of your patrol.
Ketill: 'Thank you for your help with the bears, thanks to you the road will be safe once more.'

The Lost Tool

Bestowal dialogue

'Can you keep a secret? I was exploring an old cave over yonder, when I was attacked by one of those vicious cave-claws. In the fight, I accidentally left my pick-axe behind.
'Could you go and get my pick for me...and while you're at it, kill off a few of those cave-claws, so I can continue my digging in peace.
'The cave is to the east in the Winterheights. Hurry now! I think I was nearing a vein of gold when they drove me out!'

Background

Flosi, an elderly dwarf-prospector, lost his pick while digging in an old cave infested by cave-claws.

Objective 1

  • Find Flosi's lost pick-axe
  • Defeat cave-claws in cave (0/8)
The cave is east of Thorin's Hall, in the Winterheights.
Certain that he was nearing a vein of gold before being driven out of the cave, Flosi asked you to retrieve his pick-axe, as well as clear some of the cave-claws from the cave.
Flosi: 'My pick-axe must still be in the old cave south-east in the Winterheights.'

Objective 2

Flosi is on the stairs in front of the main gate to Thorin's Hall.
You should return the pick-axe to Flosi and let the old prospector know it should be safe for him to return to the cave.
Flosi: 'Ah, there she is! Thank you, <name>. But I've sad news...a friend of mine told me the cave's been tapped dry. There's naught but fool's gold in there.
'But don't you worry...I'll find my claim one of these days!'

The Puzzle-vault

Bestowal dialogue

'Finally! It's working.... I think.
'I'm going to have to stay here to care for this machine. You go open the vault! It's quite a distance away -- on the other side of Thorin's Hall -- here, to the north and up the stairs. The chains and cables run all through the walls -- a real work of art!
'Make sure you get the order of the levers right, or you'll have to come back here so I can reset the gears. Perhaps those clues you found in the boxes will help with the order.'

Background

Now that you have assembled all the gears, it is time to open the vault.
You found these clues etched in the faces of the gears:
The axe bites deep before first light of the sun.
The sun rises after the moon has set.
A jewel may be found in the light of the sun.
Jewels are only found after much hard work.
Before all else, the silvery light of the moon can be seen.

Objective 1

  • Pull the first lever
The vault is across Thorin's Hall to the north and up the stairs.
Pull the vault levers in the right sequence. If you make a mistake, go back to Bávor Redstone to reset the gears.
Bávor: 'Make certain to consult the riddles. We must be certain to get the levers pulled in the correct sequence. Oh, this is very exciting!'
Click!

Objective 2

  • Pull the second lever
The vault is across Thorin's Hall to the north and up the stairs.
Pull the vault levers in the right sequence. If you make a mistake, go back to Bávor Redstone to reset the gears.
Click!

Objective 3

  • Pull the third lever
The vault is across Thorin's Hall to the north and up the stairs.
Pull the vault levers in the right sequence. If you make a mistake, go back to Bávor Redstone to reset the gears.
Click!

Objective 4

  • Pull the fourth lever
The vault is across Thorin's Hall to the north and up the stairs.
Pull the vault levers in the right sequence. If you make a mistake, go back to Bávor Redstone to reset the gears.
Click! Click! Click! Click! The vault has unlocked

Objective 5

  • Collect the contents of the puzzle-vault
Bávor Redstone is back on the far side of Thorin's Hall to the south.
Now that you have solved the riddle of the puzzle-vault, you should collect the treasure and bring it back to Bávor Redstone.
Bávor: 'Please don't tell me there was nothing in the vault!'
You take a large crude black rock from the vault
Bávor: 'This was in the vault? This?
Bávor stares incredulously at the black rock. 'Amazing! Fantastic! Incredible!
'Listen, no one knew just what was sealed in that vault! This is one of the greatest of all the treasures of the Dwarves!
'Oh, I know it doesn't look like much, but the story goes that Durin himself hewed this from Gundabad, the mountain where he first awoke! It's the first chunk of ore ever mined by the father of our line! This is the most ancient artifact of the Dwarves and serves as a symbol of our heritage. You have unearthed a true treasure with all your hard work, and you deserve all our thanks.'

The Fifth Gear

Bestowal dialogue

'This wretched gear won't fit. I'm guessing the fifth gear goes here, and the fourth atop it. Blast! Such art is lost, yet I must make it work! Ah well, I am keeping you from your labours with my complaining.
'The fifth missing gear was placed in a chest hidden in the woods in eastern Haudh Lin, north and east of Kheledûl. However, a brood of vicious spiders have made the place their lair.
'It will be a challenge to find the chest without running afoul of the vile creatures.'

Background

Bávor is an artificer tasked with repairing the great lock which opens access to the fabled Vault of the Mountain.

Objective 1

  • Find the missing fifth gear
The fifth gear is in a chest in a spider lair north and east of Kheledûl in eastern Haudh Lin.
Bávor has asked you to recover the fifth and final gear from a terrible spider-lair.
Bávor: 'The fifth missing gear was place in a chest hidden in the woods in eastern Haudh Lin, north and east of Kheledûl. However, a brood of vicious spiders have made the place their lair.
'It will be a challenge to find the chest without running afoul of the vile creatures.'
Found the missing fifth gear

Objective 2

Bávor is in Thorin's Hall.
Bávor will be pleased to see you have recovered the fifth and final gear.
Bávor: 'Wonderful! This is the last of the missing pieces! Everything should fit together now...I hope....'

The Fourth Gear

Bestowal dialogue

'The fourth missing gear is going to be a...a bit of a problem. You see, it was kept here in Thorin's Halls, and the confounded Dourhands took it when they left, as they were forever trying to get into that vault while they were here.
'From what I understand, the fourth gear is in a chest in Kheledûl, the last town the Dourhands still control. Kheledûl is on the river east of Gondamon.
'I'm not sure exactly where you'll find the gear, but I would not be surprised if it was well-guarded, as the Dourhands know very well that it is essential for getting into the Vault.'

Background

Bávor is an artificer tasked with repairing the great lock which opens access to the fabled Vault of the Mountain.

Objective 1

  • Find the missing fourth gear
The fourth gear is in a chest at the Dourhand port of Kheledûl, east of Gondamon.
Bávor has asked you to recover the fourth missing gear from the Dourhands of Kheledûl.
Bávor: 'From what I understand, the fourth gear is in a chest in Kheledûl, the last town the Dourhands still control. Kheledûl is on the river east of Gondamon.'
Found the missing fourth gear

Objective 2

Bávor is in Thorin's Hall, far to the north-west of Kheledûl.
Bávor will be pleased to see you have recovered the fourth gear.
Bávor: 'Well done! I'll have this fitted in a moment. Get in there! Fit, blast you! Ow! My thumb!
'Well, I'll have it in soon. There's only one gear left to go.'

The Third Gear

Bestowal dialogue

'I'm not sure yet how that second gear fits into this contraption, but that is not your concern. I need you to get out there and find that third gear.
'The third missing gear was placed in a chest hidden in Emyn Hoedh, the old barrows of the Edain in Haudh Lin, north-east of Gondamon. I'm not sure exactly where it is, but it's said to be in the ruins of an ancient crypt.
'Be wary, though! I've heard rumour that barrow-wights roam those lands.'

Background

Bávor is an artificer tasked with repairing the great lock which opens access to the fabled Vault of the Mountain.

Objective 1

  • Find the missing third gear
The third gear is in a chest in the ruins of an ancient crypt in Emyn Hoedh, the barrow-mounds in Haudh Lin, north-east of Gondamon.
Bávor has asked you to recover the third missing gear for the Vault of the Mountain. He warned you of rumours regarding the presence of barrow-wights amongst the old mounds.
Bávor: 'The third missing gear was placed in a chest hidden in Emyn Hoedh, the old barrows of the Edain in Haudh Lin, north-east of Gondamon. I'm not sure exactly where it is, but it's said to be in the ruins of an ancient crypt.'
Found the missing third gear

Objective 2

Bávor is in Thorin's Hall.
Bávor will be pleased to begin working with the third gear.
Bávor: 'This gear fit too easily. I wonder if I made a mistake? Ah well, no matter. There are two more gears to find.'

The Second Gear

Bestowal dialogue

'That first gear has seen better days, but it's not beyond repair. I'll get to work on that, while you look for the second gear.
'According to the old records, the second gear was hidden in a chest in some old ruins to the south in the Vale of Thráin. The ruins are on the west side of the vale, off the road and across the Vale from Noglond. The records indicate that the chest is on the south side of the ruins.
'One thing you should be aware of, though, is that goblins have overrun those ruins. Be careful.'

Background

Bávor is an artificer tasked with repairing the great lock which opens access to the fabled Vault of the Mountain.

Objective 1

  • Find the missing second gear
The chest containing the second gear can be found on the south side of the goblin-infested ruins in the Vale of Thráin, south of Thorin's Halls and west of Noglond.
Bávor discovered the location of the second gear and has sent you to search for it, while he repairs the first gear.
Bávor: 'According to the old records, the second gear was hidden in a chest in some old ruins to the south in the vale of Thráin. The ruins are on the west side of the vale, off the road and across the Vale from Noglond. The records indicate that the chest is on the south side of the ruins.'
Found the missing second gear

Objective 2

Bávor is in Thorin's Hall.
Bávor will be pleased to begin working with the second gear.
Bávor: 'Aye! This is it! Wait...does this actually fit anywhere? How about there? Ah, I'll work it out eventually. For now, we must find the other gears!'

The First Gear

Bestowal dialogue

'Greetings! I wonder if you could lend me a hand? I have been trying to repair this device, which opens access to the old Vault of the Mountain, but some key pieces, ancient gears, were removed and scattered long ago to prevent the Dourhands getting their grubby hands on the vault treasure.
'Now that we have finally ousted the Dourhands from Thorin's Hall, it is time to open the Vault, but first this device must be repaired. Old Sindri Winchmaster, the artificer who made this, had skill far beyond mine, so I'll need the actual pieces that were lost to have any hope of getting it to work again.
'They say the first missing gear was hidden somewhere in an old cave in the Winterheight, up the path south-east from Thorin's Hall. You will probably find it in a chest somewhere in the cave. There's a trick to the chest, by the way, you have to press in at the corners to open it....'

Background

Bávor is an artificer tasked with repairing the great lock which opens access to the fabled Vault of the Mountain.

Objective 1

  • Find the first gear
The first missing gear is in a cave in the Winterheight, south-east of Thorin's Hall.
Bávor has asked you to help reassemble the dwarf-built device which opens the Vault.
Bávor: 'They say the first missing gear was hidden somewhere in an old cave in the Winterheight, up the path south-east from Thorin's Hall. You will probably find it in a chest somewhere in the cave. There's a trick to the chest, by the way, you have to press in at the corners to open it….'
Found the first gear

Objective 2

Bávor is in Thorin's Hall.
Bávor will be pleased to see you have acquired the first gear.
Bávor: 'Ha! This looks like the gear! It goes here...or maybe here....
'No matter. I'll work it out given time, I'm sure of it!'

Gísli's Favourite

Bestowal dialogue

'Welcome and well met! I could use your help, if you have a moment. I've a bit of a problem -- nothing terrible, mind you, but difficult for this old dwarf. You see, it's my son, Gísli. He's a good fellow and all, but he is young and doesn't have the experience of his elders. He has just received his first post, down at Noglond in the Vale of Thráin.
'I want to send Gísli his favourite meal so he knows I'm thinking about him, but I don't have the most important ingredient: Cave-claw legs! If you can bring me a batch, I just know Gísli will be pleased! You can find cave-claws in the old mine east of Thorin's Halls.
'You've not had a good meal, until you've tasted my stew!'

Background

Ormr's son Gísli was recently assigned to his first post at Noglond, the way-station in the Vale of Thráin. The dwarf wants to prepare his son's favourite meal to show him he is thinking about him.

Objective 1

Cave-claws can be found in the old mine east of Thorin's Hall. Ormr is on the road south from Thorin's Hall to Noglond.
Ormr has asked you to collect the last ingredient he needs to prepare Gísli's favourite meal: cave-claw legs.
Ormr: 'I have started preparing the stew, but I need htose cave-claw legs to finish it, <name>. They are the most important ingredient!'
Ormr: 'I am at your service, <name>! I'll just add these to the stew...give me a few minutes.
'There we are! Could you take this meal to Gísli? You can find him south of here at Noglond, the way-station in the Vale of Thráin. Just follow the road south!
'Gísli will be pleased, I am sure.'

Objective 2

  • Bring Gísli the meal prepared by his father
Gísli is at Noglond, south of Thorin's Halls.
Ormr finished preparing the stew for his son and asked you to deliver it to Gísli for him.
Ormr: 'You should hurry if you're going to get that meal to Gísli before it gets cold. He is posted at Noglond, the way-station in the Vale of Thráin, south down the road.'
Gísli: 'Not again! This is the third meal my father has sent me in as many days! When will he realize I'm a grown dwarf, and not a child to be coddled and fretted over?
'Ah, you're not to blame. Thank you for the food. Maybe someday my father will realize I'm not the thin-bearded dwarf of sixty he remembers.'
