Into the Woods

Bestowal dialogue

'I swear I seen it, though me neighbours say what I'm off me head. I was in the far north Chetwood near Nen Harn, all alone of course, and I saw something moving through the trees.
'No, that's not quite right. It appeared to me that the trees themselves was moving. Something big and terrible is in the woods, and I'm afraid of what it might be.
'There's a group of hunters who make their camp on the western edge of Nen Harn, I was up there delivering the missus' snapper soup and got me a bit lot -- that's when I saw it. When I found them, I told them what I seen, and I wonder if you could ask Walt Whitrose if he's seen the same?'

Background

The woods of Bree-land can be dark and mysterious. Some places are darker than others....

Objective 1

Walt Whitrose is camped within the ruins at the western edge of the lake known as Nen Harn.
Gil Sandheaver asked you to speak with Walt Whitrose about the strange thing he saw north of the Far Chetwood.
Gil Sandheaver: 'Well, what did Walt tell you?'
Walt Whitrose: 'Gil Sandheaver says what? Well, I'll not be denying that the Old Forest is a queer place -- and no matter what anyone tells you, the trees do move -- but I've never heard tell of any such in the Chetwood.
'Still, if Gil sent you here to talk with me then it is fair to think that he had himself quite a scare.'

Hengstacer Farm

Bestowal dialogue

'I must send you next to the north-east to speak with the owner of Hengstacer Farm. Recent events surrounding the farm have reached my ears and speak of a dwarf who has come under attack by Orcs while looking for assistance from the farmhands.
'If you are willing, head north-east and speak with Éogar, the owner of the farm.'

Background

A visiting dwarf at the Hengstacer Farm came under attack from some Orcs.

Objective 1

Hengstacer Farm lay north-east of Saeradan's Cabin, up the eastward road from the Old Greenway Fort.
Saeradan sent you to the Hengstacer Farm to investigate talk of Orcs.
Saeradan: 'You should speak at once with Éogar at the Hengstacer Farm.'
Éogar: 'Orcs? You sound like that foolish dwarf who was here not long ago. I will tell you the same that I told to him...talk to my farmhand, Cam Applewood.
'He is the one spreading the hay over there.'

Objective 2

Cam Applewood is at the Hengstacer Farm.
Éogar told you to speak with Cam Applewood, his farmhand.
Éogar: 'Cam will be the one who might help you. Speak with him.'
Cam Applewood: 'Are you here about our horses?'

Thornley's Farm

Bestowal dialogue

'The Thornley's, farmers and workers of these lannds for many generations, hae been spared much danger from the brigands. Word has reached me, however, that the patriarch of the family has gone missing as he went to deal with foes out of the north.
'If you are willing, I would ask you to visit Rose Thornley, to the west at her home, and ask after the well-being of her husband.'

Background

Brigands referring to themselves as Sharkey's Men have taken over the old Dogwood farm, threatening the neighbouring steads.

Objective 1

Rose Thornley is at her home, west of Saeradan's cabin.
The Ranger Saeradan suggested you speak with Rose Thornley concerning her husband's disappearance.
Saeradan: 'You should speak with Rose Thornley at her farm.'
Rose Thornley: 'Robb has gone missing, but how do you know this? Are you one of those Southerners looking to steal this place? You'll find that we're harder than the land we live on!
'No...you are not...are you? Sent then by the Rangers? Never did trust them much, skulking about in cover of night never talking proper-like, but I must admit a feeling of gratitude lately. Least-wise since Robb's gone missing.
'Robb went out with his father's sword trying to scare off those brutish men from the North. He left a few days back and has yet to come home. I am running out of excuses to tell the workers. Please, will you find him?

Objective 2

Robb was last seen heading north along the road.
Rose Thornley has asked you to find her husband.
Rose Thornley: 'Please, will you look for Robb? Those brutes he was after looked like they were off to the north and across the road to the east.'
Robb Thornley: 'Help at last! We must get out of here quickly.'

Thornley's Revenge

Bestowal dialogue

'Robb is resting now and recovering nicely, thanks to you, but he asks another favour of you.
'He said he can't sleep, thinking about those accursed Orcs what ambushed him up the Greenway. When he was captured, he said a giant Orc came over to torment him from a camp to the west of the place he was being held, the one behind a wooden stockade. He says the other Orcs called this monster the Red Reaver. Robb says he must have his revenge on the Red Reaver and will be glad to give you what coins he can spare if you can put him to heel.
'Now, I can't say as I like all this bloodshed, and it sounds right dangerous to me, but if you'll show that horrible monster who tortured Robb a thing or two, I guess you surely do deserve a reward.'

Background

You rescued Robb Thornley from the Orcs, battered and beaten, but he is not satisfied with rescue. He wants retribution.

Objective 1

The Red Reaver is in the Orc-stockade on the western side of the Greenway, north of Thornley's farm.
On behalf of her husband, Rose Thornley has offered you a reward if you would go to the stockade and slay the Red Reaver.
Rose Thornley: 'Have you done away with the Red Reaver yet?'

Objective 2

Thornley's farm is south along the Greenway from the Orc-stockade.
You should return to Thornley's farm at once to tell Rose of your victory and claim your reward.
Rose Thornley: 'Robb will be so happy to hear that you've done away with that beast of an Orc! And I'll thank you too for making the Greenway a safer place. Please accept this reward from both of us.'

Thornley's Rescue

Bestowal dialogue

'Please, you must help me! These Orcs captured me while I was away from my farm on business. Please...help me escape!'

Background

Robb Thornley, a Bree-land farmer, has been captured by marauding Orcs.

Objective 1

  • Free Robb Thornley and escort him to safety.
  • Protect Robb Thornley as he flees
Robb Thornley has asked you to help him escape from the Orc camp.
Robb Thornley says, "Please get me through these cursed Orcs for a ways, friend."
Robb Thornley says, "Thanks, friend, I should be able to make it back to the farm on my own from here!"
Robb Thornley says, "Oh yes... please tell my wife I'm all right if you see her before I do. Our farm is south a ways in the Bree-fields."

Objective 2

Rose Thornley can be found at their farm in the Bree-fields, south of the Orc camp.
Robb Thornley's wife, Rose, should be told of her husband's escape from the Orcs.
Rose: 'I'm so thankful your rescued Robb! He's resting now, but he asked me to give you a reward. He's also asked for something more....'

Down the Hill

Bestowal dialogue

'With your help and the help of those Rangers...the Ranger, you came to me because of them didn't you? Well I should thank them, but now that I have my notes and focus, I want to get to the task of investigating these ruins.
'Would you be willing to make your way west down the hill to the Old Greenway Fort to tell that Andreg fellow that I am grateful for his assistance?
'You may want to make mention of the Orcs skulking about in the north too.'

Background

Oddvarr finally remembered that he requested aid prior to your arrival.

Objective 1

  • Talk to Andreg at the Greenway Fort
Andreg is at the Old Greenway Fort, west of Hengstacer.
Oddvarr has asked you to tell the Ranger Andreg that he is grateful for the Rangers' assistance and that Orcs have come down from the eastern stretches of the North Downs as well.
Andreg: 'Oddvarr? I cannot say that I recall the name or the dwarf. If you say that he is forgetful, then perhaps he meant to send you on to Saeradan.
'This other bit of news is disconcerting. We must investigate, I fear.'

Stolen Notes

Bestowal dialogue

'This is not good! In fact, it is downright terrible! All my work...gone! Just like that, quick as you please. Drat and double-drat!
'My notes are missing, and I'm absolutely certain that I placed them in my pack. There was a band of Tarkrîp Orcs from around Cirith Nur, west to northwest of here in the North Bree-fields, come sniffing around the ruins. That's why I left my pack behind in such a hurry.
'I'm in no shape to take on Orcs. I'm an explorer, not a warrior. Those notes mean everything to me. Could you please find them and return them to me?'

Background

Oddvarr's pack was recovered, but he is no better off. The notes he wrote down are missing, and he suspects that some Orcs made off with them.

Objective 1

Tarkrîp Orcs from around Cirith Nur, west to northwest of Oddvar in the North Bree-fields, have stolen Oddvar's precious notes.
Oddvarr's notes are missing, and he suspects the Tarkrîp Orcs ran off with them. One of the Orcs must have them, if you can only find which one.
Oddvarr: 'Drat and double-drat! I don't have time to re-write all those notes. If I don't get my original notes back, then I'll have to home empty-handed!'

Objective 2

  • Return Oddvarr's notes
Return to Oddvarr, south-east of Hengstacer.
You found Oddvarr's notes on the body of a slain Orc.
Oddvarr: 'Orcs! I hate Orcs. Why would they run off with my notes like that? I'll tell you why...just to get my beard in a snarl, I would say!
'Now that my notes are safe, I can continue my research. Lofar will be pleased to know that my work continues unabated.

The Forgetful Dwarf

Bestowal dialogue

'My name's Oddvarr of the Blue Mountains, and I'm here in Bree-land on very important business. The only problem is, I misplaced my pack.
'Now, I'm to investigate the old dwarf-ruins that are rumoured to exist here. I'm sure there are important discoveries to be made, and I'm the one to do it! I'm a famous explorer, you see.
'But I digress! If you could help me find that pack, I would be indebted to you. You start looking over yonder north, and I'll search this area and to the south. If you find anything, meet me back here!'

Background

You met an old dwarf named Oddvarr who seems a bit absent-minded. He is an explorer of some renown...or at least he says he is.

Objective 1

Oddvarr asked you to search the ruins to the north.
Oddvarr set his pack down somewhere in the area and cannot seem to remember where.
You see a pack

Objective 2

  • Retrieve Oddvarr's pack
You found Oddvarr's pack in some old ruins, north of where you spoke to Oddvarr.
Pack retrieved

Objective 3

  • Return Oddvarr's provisions
Oddvarr is by the haystacks south of the ruins where you found the pack.
You found Oddvarr's pack containing his much-needed provisions.
Oddvarr: 'Ah, there's my old pack! Thank you so much for returning it to me. I would be in a world of hurt if my notes....
'What? My notes are missing! Curse those Orcs! They must have thought they were valuable.'

Horses for Hire

Bestowal dialogue

'Hullo, there. If you're here about our horses, I'm afraid we don't loan them out to just anyone. These horses are built for speed, not heavy labour. In fact, that reminds me of something.
'A dwarf came to the farm and requested some horses. Not sure what he intended to do with them, but by the looks of him he needed some pack animals. I told him that our horses weren't for hire, and he left in a huff.
'Seemed a bit peculiar, he did not seem quite right in the head. If you have time, perhaps you can check up on the old fellow. I saw him wander off to the ruins south-east of here.'

Background

Cam Applewood works on a horse-farm called Hengstacer in the Bree-fields. He was approached by a dwarf who wanted to hire some horses for an expedition.

Objective 1

The old dwarf was last seen walking to the old ruins to the south-east.
Cam asked you to check up on an old dwarf who wanted to explore the ruins near Hengstacer.
Cam Applewood: 'If it's not out of your way, can you make sure that old dwarf isn't in trouble? He seemed a bit...queer in the head.'
Oddvarr: 'Who's that there? Oh, hello! Sorry about that. These old eyes aren't what they used to be. Do you have time to talk? I could use some help.'

Word to the South

Bestowal dialogue

'While we did not capture Ferny, we did stop the threat for the moment. This will please Saeradan, and we should make haste to inform him of this success.
'Return to his cottage, south along the Greenway on the east side of he road, and tell him what you have accomplished.'

Background

Rangers, watching movements of enemies from the north and south, are concerned over the appearance of a foe they have long fought in the north.

Objective 1

Saeradan is at his cabin, south of the Old Greenway Fort.
Andreg isntruted you to return to Saeradan with news of your success.
Andreg: 'Return to Saeradan's cabin, south along the Greenway on the east side of the road, and tell him what you have accomplished.'
Saeradan: 'While catching the coward, Ferny, and presenting him to Grimbriar would have established greater acceptance between us, I am pleased to know that the Orcs have been stifled for the moment.
'Still, we cannot be certain that we have stopped their efforts altogether, and I must ask you to continue your efforts for the moment.'

Broken Alliance

"After learning of a plot by Sharkey's Men to forge an alliance with the Orcs encroaching into the northern Bree-fields, the Ranger Saeradan sets into motion a plan to break the alliance before it can be established...."

Background

You have found the cave. Now all that remains is to enter it, disperse the brigands and Orcs, and slay their leaders.

Objective 1

Defeat the brigands and Orcs in the cave.
Bill Ferny says, "Right. Let's try this again. You Orcs will get half - half! We'll give you half of all the loot we take."
Bill Ferny says, "You will be given White Hand gear and all the food you want. The farmers here are feeding us if they don't want their farms burned."
Bill Ferny says, "Oh yes, Sharkey will protect you from the Iron Crown. Have no fear of that!"
Bill Ferny says, "Remember, you've been cut off. Angmar doesn't care what happens to you. But Sharkey's Men can help you!"
Bill Ferny says, "What the-? Intruders? This will be your first test, Chieftain! I'll talk to you again after you've dealt with these fools!"

Breaking Alliances

Bestowal dialogue

'Your efforts in the south yielded information about Bill Ferny, a Man of Bree with terrible and self-serving ideals. Ferny was working to assist the brigands loyal to Sharkey to join with the Tarkrîp Orcs coming from the north. Such an alliance would pinch the resources to Bree-land from both sides and spell certain doom for her people. Your efforts here in the north have done much to assist us in seeing that the Orcs are broken and their strength diminished.

'Your recent discovery of a cave built into the cliff face at Cirith Núr leads me to believe that the cave will serve a terrible purpose; a place for Ferny to meet with the Orc-leaders and facilitate an arrangement to further invade Bree.
'It seems now that you have been chosen to avert this invasion and shatter this alliance once and for all. You will need to return to the encampment at Cirith Núr and enter the cavern to disrupt the alliance. You must see that the Orcs and evil Men do not succeed in their plans. Are you prepared?'

Background

Rangers, watching movements of enemies from the north and south, are concerned over the appearance of a foe they have long fought in the north.

Objective 1

  • Locate the Cave
The meeting cave is in the Orc-encampment of Cirith Núr, north-west of the Old Greenway Fort.
Andreg has tasked you with finding the cave where the brigands and Orcs plan to meet and defeat their leaders
You have located the cave.

Objective 2

  • Enter the cave
You have found the cave. Now all that remains is to enter it, disperse the brigands and Orcs, and defeat their leaders.
Complete the quest Instance: Broken Alliance.

Objective 3

Andreg is at the Old Greenway Fort, south east of Cirith Núr,
You should bring news of your success to Andreg at once.
Andreg: 'Ferny escaped? That does not bode well, but still things could be worse. Given that the Orcs will no longer pose a threat to Bree-land, we have succeeded here. We will turn our attention towards watching Ferny and his associations at once.
'Well done!'

Boars Making Beds

Bestowal dialogue

'The others are concerned about the carnivores stalking about these lands, but I am worried about the boars. They are certainly capable of eating meat, but it is their bedding habits that concern me.
'The number of boars in these lands is enough to trample down the surrounding fields and destroy the food supply we need for the animals.
'It is for this reason that I would ask you to hunt the boars. Will you help?'

Background

Boars are everywhere throughout Bree, but they are not always welcome. Ham Greythistle does not appreciate the number of boars treading through the nearby fields and wants their number thinned, lest they destroy some of the food sources for the animals meant to stock Thornley's Work Site.

Objective 1

  • Defeat boars in the Northern Bree-fields (0/12)
Boars can be found throughout the north Bree-fields.
Ham Greythistle has asked you to hunt boars for him.
Ham Greythistle: 'You will find boars all around the north Bree-fields. You may even find a hollow full of them if you look to the west.'

Objective 2

Ham Greythistle awaits your return at Thornley's Work Site.
You should return to Ham Greythistle and inform him of your success.
Ham Greythistle: 'Good. With fewer boars milling about, there will be more opportunity to feed the animals that we will move onto the work-site soon.'

Bears Craving Honey

Bestowal dialogue

'Have you seen the bears around here? They stumble so close to the farm both day and night that I think they are either growing tame...or worse.
'If they continue to come closer to the farm, then it is possible they will attack, and if we put the horses in their stable before then...well the Thornleys will certainly lose much. If you are willing, I can offer up some coin for thinning out the bears around the area. You will find the bears I am talking roaming about from the Old Greenway Fort in the east through the Brandywine Hills in the west.
'Return to me when you've culled this lot.'

Background

Ray Thistlebur believes that the bears surrounding Thornley's Work Site are out for more than honey and that they will soon attack the site. He refuses to allow the horses to be moved into the stable until the bears are driven off.

Objective 1

Bears can be found throughout the north Bree-fields.
Ray Thistlebur has asked you to thin the number of the bears in the area.
Ray Thistlebur: 'Others think that there are greater threats than bears inthis land. Everywhere that I look, I see them as a greater threat than any I have seen. We have got to do something about their encroaching and growing population.'

Objective 2

Ray Thistlebur awaits your return at the stables at Thornley's Work Site.
Ray Thistlebur will be pleased to know that you have done as he asked.
Ray Thistlebur: 'You did well, and I did make a promise to offer you pay, but I cannot say that I am willing to bring the horses here yet.
'Look around you, see them our there...bears, I truly think that they are the greatest threat we face here in Bree-land. Surely, I do.'

A Hollow of Wolves

Bestowal dialogue

'Greetings, friend, did the missus send you over to talk to me? I've told her time and again, Mr. Thornley too, the horses will get spooked if we bring them in with what goes on here at night.
'There are wolves all about these lands and they've a den to the west where the Brandy Hills begin to rise in the distance. Until we thin out the number of wolves, we cannot risk the horses being moved here.
'If we thin out their number, I will think about bringing the horses out here to the farm. I'll even pay to get the help we need. Interested?'

Background

Nate Brittleleaf explained that the wolves to the west of Thornley's Work Site, near the tall rise of the Brandy Hills, encroach further and further towards the Farm every night. He will not allow the horses to move into the stable until the wolves are handled.

Objective 1

The wolf-den is west of Thornley's Work Site.
Nate Brittleleaf asked you to thin out the number of the wolves that prowl near Thornley's Work Site.
Nate Brittleleaf: 'How is your search for that wolf den coming? I'm still seeing a lot of those wolves around here.'

Objective 2

Nate Brittleleaf is at Thornley's Farm.
You should return to Nate Brittleleaf and tell him that the wolves have been dispatched.
Nate Brittleleaf: 'It's good to know that the number of wolves have been reduced. Still, these hills seem to be crawling with wildlife not usually seen this close to inhabited land. There must be something that has them all spooked.'

Dirty Work: Orc-slaying

Bestowal dialogue

'The outriders you dispatched were only the first of many foes that made their way into Bree-land from the North Downs. I had hoped that the message you delivered would have been clear enough to force some of the Orcs back towards the north, but they have organized well and built out a fort upon the western side of the Greenway. We need to drive them out of that area as quickly as possible.
'You will need to travel north again, I fear, this time crossing the Greenway and searching for the Orc-encampment called Cirith Núr. Strike at the heart of the Orc-forces there, and we may yet break their will.'

Background

Rangers, watching movements of enemies from the north and south, are concerned over the appearance of a foe they have long fought in the north.

Objective 1

You will find Orcs encamped at Cirith Núr on the west side of the Greenway to the north of the Old Greenway Fort.
Andreg asked you to attempt to disrupt the Orcs at their encampment at Cirith Núr.
Andreg: 'You will find the Orc-encampemnt at Cirith Núr, west of the Greenway to the north. Make your way there and defeat the Orcs in an attempt to break their will.'

Objective 2

Andreg is at the Old Greenway Fort, south of Cirith Núr.
The Orc-encampment was filled with powerful Orcs, and a cave carved into the cliff face lay within the heart of the camp. You should return to Andreg with your report.
Andreg: 'A cave was carved into the face of the cliffside you say? It all makes sense now, <name>.
'That must be where Ferny is headed!'
