Clear the Way

Bestowal dialogue

'The goblins in these hills are causing us no end of grief. They've blocked off the river with debris and slowed the flow to a trickle, and what water exists is fouled by their presence.
'I can send a crew to remove the debris, but I need someone with a stout heart and a strong sword-arm to clear out some of the goblins. I can't afford to lose any workers, what with the Dourhands to contend with.
'You can find the canal west of here, just past the hills. The goblins have a camp west of their make-shift dam.'

Background

The water supply coming into Gondamon is still interrupted, despite your efforts to clear the canal.

Objective 1

The canal near Gondamon is to the west, past the hills.
Otkell, the Chief Builder of Gondamon, informed you that goblins are responsible for the lack of fresh water. He asked you to go to the area west of the canal and remove the goblin threat.
Otkell: 'No luck with the goblins? Well keep at it. My crew can clear away the blockage just as soon as your part is done. The goblin camp is west of here.'

Objective 2

Otkell is at Gondamon to the east of the canal, beyond the hills.
You should return to Otkell and tell him about the goblins you defeated.
Otkell: 'Is it safe for my work crews? Excellent. I wouldn't send my lads out with all those goblins around. We need all the guards here to protect us from the cursed Dourhands in case they attack.'

On to Gondamon

Bestowal dialogue

'This canal water is used down in Gondamon in the Low-lands as well as here in the Vale of Thráin. You should go down there and make sure they know we removed the blockage up here.
'Travel down the road to the east, then turn south at the first crossing and Gondamon will be right there. You will want to talk to old Otkell.
'Their cisterns must be nearly dry down there, what with the blockage as bad as it was!'

Background

With the thickets removed from the canal, the waterflow has been restored to Noglond in the Vale of Thráin.

Objective 1

Otkell is in Gondamon, east down the road from Noglond, and south at the first crossing.
Geitir has asked you to inform Otkell in Gondamon about the restoration of the canal.
Geitir: 'Gondamon is easy to find. Just take the road east, then turn south at the first crossing.'
Otkell: 'You restored the waterflow? Why it's not flowing nearly enough at all! You may have cleared out some problems over at Noglond, but there must be something else blocking the flow around here.'

Quenching a Thirst

Bestowal dialogue

'The water has not been flowing down to Noglond for several days. I sent a message back to the Halls, but I've not received a reply from the builders. I'm not about to send one of my boys to do builder's work, and I can't have them traipsing to the river everytime we need water.
'Would you look into it? The canal runs all the way down the mountain from Thorin's Halls and to Gondamon below. The problem must be up-river from here.
'The above-ground part of the canal, the place that may be blocked, is south and west of here. Just take the road south to the bridge and look underneath it. Follow the canal all the way up to the big gate if you have to, just find the problem!'

Background

According to Geitir, the waterflow from the canal has been staunched for several days, and the builders have not replied to his message requesting assistance.

Objective 1

  • Discover the source of the canal's waterflow problem
The canal can be found south of Noglond, flowing down from Thorin's Halls.
Geitir asks you to investigate the flow of the canal to Noglond and learn the cause of the problem.
Geitir: 'Have you found the source of the problem?'
There are thickets clogging the canal

Objective 2

  • Clear away the thickets clogging the canal (0/8)
There are thickets blocking the canal between Noglond and Thorin's Halls.
Now that you have discovered the problem in the canal, you should clear away enough of the thickets to allow the water to flow more freely. There may be several patches of thickets along the canal.

Objective 3

Geitir is at Noglond to the north of the canal, south of Thorin's Halls.
You should return to Geitir with news of your success.
Geitir: 'Done already? Good work! We could use someone like you on the guard...better than these layabouts. Can I interest you in signing up? Oh, the pay's not that good, and you'll find yourself in some cold, out-of-the-way post like this, but it's a living. No? I thought not....
'Ah well, thanks for your work, anyway.'

The Flow to Noglond

Bestowal dialogue

'I've got some complaints from Noglond, down in the Vale of Thráin to the south, that the canal hasn't been flowing the way it should. Hopefully that repair you made to the leak has solved that problem, as well.
'Could you go down to Noglond and talk to Geitir about the problem? He can tell you if the canal is back to normal. Just follow the road south as it curves through the Vale of Thráin, and you will eventually come upon Noglond.
'With the Dourhands stirring up trouble, we are so short on workhands.'

Background

Tindr hopes the repairs to the canal in Thorin's Hall has restored the flow of water to Noglond, the way-station in the Vale of Thráin.

Objective 1

Geitir is in Noglond, south on the road from Thorin's Halls.
Tindr has asked you to speak with Geitir in Noglond to learn if the flow of water in the canal has returned to normal.
Tindr: 'Have you not been to Noglond yet?'
Geitir: 'Has the waterflow been restored? I should say not. It's just a trickle, really, when it should be a torrent!'

A Patch in Time

Bestowal dialogue

'Hurry! Take the mortar and make the repairs before the fissures expand. It's only a matter of time before the wall is breached.'

Background

A fissure has opened in the great dwarf-canal leading down from Thorin's Hall, threatening to flood the Vale of Thráin.

Objective 1

  • Collect Mortar
Enter Thorin's Hall to the north, then go west to the Hall of Merchants.
Tindr gave you some mortar with which to repair the cracks in the canal walls.
Collected Mortar
Tindr: 'The canal is leaking into the tunnels beneath the Hall of Merchants. Hurry and patch the fractures!'

Objective 2

Tindr is in the courtyard outside Thorin's Hall.
The fissure was sealed. You should return to Tindr with news of your success.
Tindr: 'That's one less task to concern me. Perhaps that will fix the problems with the water supply they've been reporting down at Noglond, the way-station in the Vale.'

Sprung a Leak

Bestowal dialogue

'I am Tindr, Master Builder of Thorin's Hall. The great canal, for which I am responsible, has recently fissured. The crack has not yet become a serious threat, but it is only a matter of time, and I haven't any builders available to assist with its repairs. Could you help me seal the fissure?
'I need to mix a mortar to seal the crack but our stores are barren. I will need stone and gypsum from the old Mirkstone Tunnels and sand from the Rockbelly Pit. The Mirkstone Tunnels are above the great statue of Thorin to the north-west. The Rockbelly Pit is to the south-east in the Winterheight.
'If we do not seal the crack soon, it may break, flooding the Vale of Thráin below.'

Background

A fissure has opened in the great dwarf-canal leading down from Thorin's Hall, threatening to flood the Vale of Thráin.

Objective 1

  • Collect gypsum (0/5)
  • Collect sand (0/5)
  • Collect stones (0/5)
  • Bring the mortar ingredients to Tindr
Tindr is in the courtyard in front of Thorin's Hall. Sand is in the Rockbelly Pit south-east of Frerin's Court in a place called Winterheight. Gypsum and small stones can be found in the Mirkstone Tunnels above Frerin's Court to the north-west.
Tindr, the Master Builder of Thorin's Hall, has asked you to collect various ingredients for a mortar with which to repair a leak in the canal wall.
Tindr: 'Where are the materials I asked you to gather?'
Tindr: 'It will just take me a moment to make the mortar. You learn a few tricks when you've done this as long as I have.
'There we are! Now take this mortar to the fissures in the canal walls in the Hall of Merchants inside the western parts of Thorin's Hall.'
