On the Mend

Bestowal dialogue

'All right, here you go. Try feeding some of this thistle-mead to the mother lynx. No sneaking sips for yourself, mind you!'

Background

Thrasi has given you some thistle-mead to feed to the mother lynx, hopefully to help heal her injuries.

Objective 1

The mother lynx is at Thrasi's cabin.
Thrasi asked you to feed the thistle-mead to the mother lynx.
Thrasi: 'That mead should fix her up right!'
Lynx-mother: The mother lynx sniffs tentatively at the fragrant mead, then quickly laps it all up.
Lynx-mother says, "Rreow!"
Thrasi says, "Watch out, there!"
Thrasi says, "Good job, girl!"
Lynx-mother says, "Mrrow"
Thrasi says, "Ah, that's a good girl."

Objective 2

Thrasi is at the hunter's lodge to the north.
The mother lynx seems to be completely healed, yet she has returned to Thrasi's side.
Thrasi: 'See? Thistle-mead! Good for what ails you...if you're a cat, that is!
'Hmmm. She seems to like me...doesn't want to run off anyway. I could use a hunting partner, and her cub's taken a shine to me as well.
'Thanks for all your help, friend. In a few years, this cub'll be old enough to join me on the hunts with his mother. Hendrevail beware!'

Thistle-mead

Bestowal dialogue

'Now the mother has a belly full of rabbit, but she still doesn't seem all that fat and sassy.
'I'm thinking that maybe an old Dwarf home-remedy might do. I've got plenty of mead, but I'm going to need some of the old secret ingredient. Now it just happens there's sharp-thistle plants in the area. I need you to go and collect some thorns, so I can grind them and mix them with the mead.
'Anyway, there's thistle-plants around the woods north of the cabin.'

Background

You found a rabbit carcass with which to feed the mother lynx. But she still does not seem well enough to hunt on her own.

Objective 1

There are sharp-thistle plants around the wood north of Thrasi's lodge.
Thrasi asked you to collect sharp-thistle plants to make a draught to cure the mother lynx's injuries.
Thrasi: 'Please collect those sharp-thistle plants.'
Thrasi: 'Excellent. It won't take too long to brew this draught....'

Hungry Mouths to Feed

'The cub is hungry, but he is too young to hunt his own food. His mother is still all scratched up and in no position to hunt either. Let's see...the only meat I have here at the lodge is either dried or smoked. I think they both could use some fresh, raw meat.
'Could I ask you for another favour? I wonder if you can find a rabbit carcass for them to eat? If you have trouble hunting a live rabbit, I have a string of rabbit traps scattered in the woods not far to the east and west of the lodge. I'd appreciate it if you would check the traps and bring back a plump rabbit.
'I'd hate to see mother and cub go without food.'

Background

Thrasi's lynx and her cub were reunited thanks to your efforts but they are getting hungry, and Thrasi is still nursing his ankle.

Objective 1

There are traps for small game scattered not far to the east and west of Thrasi's lodge.
Thrasi asked you to either hunt and kill a live rabbit, or to check his traps and bring back a rabbit carcass for the lynx-mother and her cub.
Thrasi: 'I have laid traps all over the place to the east and west of the lodge…surely one of them has caught a rabbit!'

Thrasi: 'This'll do for now, but we can't keep hand-feeding the things, or they'll lose that wild streak that makes them good hunters.'

The Cat's Meow

'What happened to me? I was out hunting bear, and I came across this mother lynx and her cubs. The poor thing was tore up mightily by some hendrevail, and I was just able to grab her before they went after me. I twisted my ankle something terrible but it'll heal, as will this old she-cat.
'She left a litter behind her, but we're both too battered to save the cubs ourselves. I'd feel awful if something happened to them but I'm no use to anyone until my ankle mends.
'Perhaps you can venture up to the den by the standing stones to the north and bring back any of the surviving cubs? I'd appreciate it, and I'm sure the mother would as well.'

Background

Thrasi, a dwarf hunter, rescued a mother lynx while out hunting bears. He was attacked by a flock of hendrevail and had to leave the mother's cubs behind.

Objective 1

  • Search the abandoned bear den
The abandoned den should be north of the hunter's lodge near the standing stones.
Thrasi hurt his leg while rescuing an injured lynx from hendrevail and asked you to retrieve the surviving cubs.
Thrasi: 'It's not far from here. Walk north to the old standing stones. The den is in the side of a hill.'
Abandoned Den: You peer inside the abandoned bear-den and hear the plaintive mewing of a hungry, frightened lynx-cub.
The poor thing is scared to leave the safety of the den, fearing attack by hendrevail.

Objective 2

  • Defeat hendrevail (0/6)
There are hendrevail throughout the woods.
A frightened lynx-cub cowers in an old den, too scared to venture out into the light. You must defeat the hendrevail lurking nearby to prove that you mean it no harm.

Objective 3

  • Coax the lynx-cub from its den
Coax the lynx-cub from its den.
With the hendrevail defeated, the lynx-cub seems to feel safe enough to leave its den.
Abandoned Den: With soothing words, you manage to coax the frightened cub from the safety of its den.

Objective 4

Thrasi is back at the hunter's lodge, south of here.
You recovered the lynx-cub as Thrasi requested. Return it to him at the hunter's lodge.
Thrasi: 'There's a precious cub! Let me take him from you and...ooww! Quit your scratching! He's a feisty one, isn't he? Or is it a she?
'Poor little thing. Too bad its litter-mates didn't fare so well, but that's the way of things. Hmmm...nipping my beard now. Perhaps the wee thing is hungry?'

Feeding the Outpost

Bestowal dialogue

'Our huntsmen are skilled, but this year's hunt has proven particularly difficult, what with the cold and the wretched Dourhands. I have found myself short of supplies for the coming winter.
'You can help us by bringing in some bear-meat. There are plenty of bears in the wilds around Gondamon, especially to the north.
'We will preserve and store the meat for the coming months.'

Background

Gafí, the provisioner of Gondamon, has asked for your help building up their winter stores.

Objective 1

Bears can be found in the wilds around Gondamon, especially to the north.
Gafí has asked you to bring in bear-meat to help fill Gondamon's stores for the coming months.
Gafí: 'We still have need of that bear meat, <name>. You ought to be able to find some in the wilds surrounding Gondamon.'
Gafí: 'Thank you for bringing in this bear-meat! I'll see that it's properly salted and stored for the winter months.'

Warming the Garrison

'The wind coming down from the mountains makes my bones ache year-round, but even the younger sentries feel the chill when the days grow short.
'We could use more pelts to make blankets and clothing in preparation for the coming winter. There is no shortage of wolves prowling in the wilds, especially to the west. I expect you will have no difficulty obtaining some furs for me.
'Wolves are vile creatures, but at least their fur is warm.'

Background

Dorri has asked for your help building their winter stores.

Objective 1

Wolves can be found in the wilds around Gondamon, especially to the west.
Dorri has asked you to hunt the wolves that menace the wilds around Gondamon and obtain pelts he can use to make blankets and winter clothing.
Dorri: 'A cold dwarf is a grumpy dwarf, <name>. Have you had any luck getting those pelts for us?'
Dorri: 'The Dwarves of Gondamon will be grateful for these pelts when the winter arrives, <name>. Thank you.'

Protecting the Hunt

'The hunters who have been plying the forests north of Gondamon have come to me with stories of being threatened or even attacked by those backstabbing Dourhand brigands.
'If you're of a mind to lend us a hand, you could head out there and deal with the treacherous thin-beards! They need to learn not to meddle with the hunters of Gondamon!
'The Dourhands have built a small camp to the north of here, in the hills somewhere. You will find plenty of heads to break there, I'd warrant.'

Background

Since the Dourhands were driven out of Thorin's Halls, they have harried the hunters of the Blue Mountain Dwarves.

Objective 1

The Dourhand brigands can be found to the north of Gondamon.
Orlygr has asked you to deal with the Dourhand brigands which have been harrying the hunters of Gondamon.
Orlygr: 'You should be able to find those brigands in a camp in the hills to the north. They mostly stay holed up in there like rats in their warren.'

Objective 2

Orlygr is at Gondamon to the south of the Dourhand-encampment.
You should return to Orlygr and report your success against the Dourhand brigands.
Orlygr: 'Ah good. That should teach the Dourhands a little lesson. You have done us a fair favour, <name>, and helped ensure that Gondamon remains secure over the coming winter months.
'Let me see if I can find some suitable reward for you.'

Exacting Vengeance

Bestowal dialogue

'I did attempt to fight my way through the port in search of the leader, to no avail. His cowardice keeps him well hidden and his lackeys gave my legs a good beating. Were it not for Svanr, I likely would have fallen to them as well.
'I failed to avenge Arndór. I am not fit for another foray, but you have helped Askell, and I hope that you will help me.
'Below us, in the valley to the east, lay the port of Kheledúl and therein the Dourhands. Will you go there and strike down a goodly number of the forces there so I might be able to give my brother the vengeance that he deserves?'

Background

Sigurdór, at the tower outside of Kheledúl, has asked you to avenge his brother where he cannot.

Objective 1

Kheledúl lies below the tower where Sigurdór waits.
Sigurdór asked you to make your way to Kheledúl to exact vengeance on the Dourhand dwarves for his slain brother.
Sigurdór: 'Carry out my vengeance, <name>! The Dourhands of Kheledûl must pay for their affrontery.'

Objective 2

Sigurdór is at the tower outside Kheledúl.
You exacted vengeance upon the murderous Dourhand dwarves responsible for slaying Sigurdór's brother, Arndór. Now you should return to Sigurdór.
Sigurdór: 'My brother may not know that this has been done, but I do and this will give me leave to rest at night. I am ever in your debt, <name>.
'I will miss my brother, but I will know that his death is avenged and that the Dourhands are weakened now to the point where we Longbeards may drive them, finally, from our lands.'

The Plundered Port

'Though we Longbeards were able to throw the Dourhands out of most of our steadings after they revealed their true evil two years ago, they are as yet still too strong for us to fight them in the field.
'The last major Dourhand holding in Ered Luin is the river port of Kheledûl. It is at Kheledûl where much of their remaining strength is concentrated, and it is at Kheledûl where they stockpile their stolen wealth, the treasure they robbed from us during the long years of their tyranny in Thorin's Halls.
'You have proven yourself to be a capable warrior and a true friend. If you can raid Kheledûl and recover the stolen treasure, not only will you be striking a blow for Durin's Folk, you will be dealing a sharp blow in my brother's name as well.'

Background

Unsatisfied by the death of the Dourhand who killed his brother, Áskell seeks to hurt the Dourhands further by reclaiming their stolen wealth.

Objective 1

The treasure boxes are kept in the river port of Kheledûl, east of Gondamon.
Áskell has devised a new plan to punish the Dourhands for Gellir's death. He has asked you to raid the port-town of Kheledûl and recover boxes of treasure stolen from the Longbeards by the Dourhands.
Áskell: 'I see you were unsuccessful at Kheledûl….'

Objective 2

  • Bring the treasure boxes to Áskell
The treasure boxes are kept in the river port of Kheledûl, east of Gondamon.
Áskell has devised a new plan to punish the Dourhands for Gellir's death. He has asked you to raid the port-town of Kheledûl and recover boxes of treasure stolen from the Longbeards by the Dourhands.
Áskell: 'Very well done! I think my brother would be satisfied with this blood price. I will send this treasure to Thorin's Halls, and perhaps we can use it to defeat the Dourhands once and for all!'

Another Brother's Sorrow

Bestowal dialogue

'Though my brother is avenged, I fear that in my sorrow I spoke too plainly to a younger dwarf who now risks his own life to avenge his own brother, a member of Gellir's company.
'The dwarf, Sigurdór, went towards Kheledûl to avenge his brother, but likely is at a tower on the outskirts of the port with the deposed dockmaster, Svarnr. Follow the road east beyond Thrasi's cabin, towards the shore, and keep an eye out for Sigurdór.
'I pray you are not too late to stop his folly.'

Background

Áskell, at Gondamon, told you that one of Gellir's company left a brother of his own behind. Sigurdór, the brother left behind, has gone to Kheledúl seeking his own vengeance. Áskell asked that you seek him out as the port has been overrun and it's dockmaster deposed to a tower on the outskirts of the port.

Objective 1

Áskell directed you to find and stop a hot-headed young dwarf from committing a terrible folly.
Seek out Sigurdór at a tower along the road to Kheledúl east of Gondamon. Stop the youth before he tries something terribly foolish and dangerous.
Áskell: 'You must hurry to Kheledûl to stop Sigurdór from doing something rash. Kheledûl lies to the east of here.'
Sigurdór: 'Áskell told me not to go, but I would hear nothing of his warning. My brother Arndór was not much older than myself, and I felt I must avenge him. I failed.
'The Dourhands are too rooted within that port for one dwarf, more miner than warrior, to dislodge. You, though, you are a hale and hearty warrior, else you would not be here....'

Vow of Vengeance

Bestowal dialogue

'You have done me a great service, ill though your news was received. These vile Dourhands. How dare they! Gellir came to them to talk of peace, but they cut him down like a goblin! I will have my revenge! Our elders watch me too closely, for they know my temper. I cannot fight the Dourhands myself. But you....
'A while back an Elf came here looking for information about the Dourhands. He thought they might be up to something truly terrible. He said his name was Glamír. I sent him towards the woods north-east of Gondamon. Seek him out...maybe he knows the whereabouts of Skíthi Blackhand, the leader of the Dourhands at the fortified eastern camp.
'My brother must have been slain at his orders. A grim and deadly warrior he is. Seek Glamír to learn Skíthi's whereabouts and wreak my vengeance upon Skíthi's head!'

Background

Áskell was enraged by the news of his brother's death at the axes of the Dourhands and has sworn to have his revenge.

Objective 1

  • Talk to Glamír at the Elf-ruins
Glamír can be found at a small outpost north-east through the woods outside of Gondamon. He rests within a small Elf-ruin there.
Glamír, an Elf, sought assistance from Áskell and the dwarves of Gondamon before heading north-east towards a large encampment of Dourhand dwarves. Áskell has asked you to seek him out and learn if he knows the whereabouts of Skíthi Blackhand.
Áskell: 'Seek Glamír, north and east from Gondamon, within the ruins. Perhaps he knows something more of Skíthi Blackhand.'
Glamír: 'Skíthi Blackhand? Yes, I know of him indeed. I have seen him just beyond the main gates of the Dourhand-encampments to the north. Be cautious, the going will not be easy within the walls of that encampment.'

Objective 2

Skíthi Blackhand is in the fortified eastern camp, north of Gondamon.
Áskell has asked you to slay Skíthi Blackhand, the Dourhand leader, in revenge for his brother's murder. He suggests you take allies.
Glamír: 'Skíthi may be to the north with the other dourhand traitors. Be wary, for that place is well-fortified.'
Defeated Skíthi Blackhand

Objective 3

Áskell is at Gondamon, south of the Dourhand-encampments.
You should return to Áskell with news of your victory over Skíthi Blackhand.
Glamír: 'Return to Gondamon and tell Áskell of what you have done. Surely the dwarf will see that the anger he holds is now ready to diminish.'
Áskell: 'Ha! So you have done my will and slain the villain who killed my brother! You have done well, <name>.
'But it is strange; I feel no pleasure at this news. The Dourhands will choose a new captain, and nothing will change.
'There must be more that we can do, something that will truly hurt them!'

The Sundered Shield

Bestowal dialogue

'Stranger, please tarry and hear my plea! My brother Gellir Goldentongue was a great warrior. Curse my treacherous tongue! I should say he IS a great warrior, but I fear for his life!
'Though he is a doughty fighter, Gellir longs for peace. Even against the advice of our elders in Thorin's Hall, he felt that there must be a way to come to some sort of understanding with the Dourhands, so he and some companions set out for the great Dourhand encampment north of Gondamon. I think he went to the westernmost of the camps, the larger one.
'He did not return from his mission. Please seek him out, and if he is slain, return to me with the news so we may seek our revenge on his murderers. You will know my brother easily by his gleaming shield, a great heirloom of our family.'

Background

Gellir Goldentongue led a delegation to make peace with the Dourhands, but has not been heard from since leaving Gondamon.

Objective 1

  • Seek Gellir Goldentongue or any sign of his passing
Gellir went to the westernmost of the two Dourhand-encampments north of Gondamon.
Áskell has asked you to look for his brother, Gellir Goldentongue. He fears that Gellir has been treacherously slain and seeks any word of his passing. Gellir carried his gleaming shield everywhere, a famous heirloom of their family.
Áskell: 'Please hurry! My brother may be in grave danger!'

Dourhand Chief says, "You were a fool to come here alone, Longbeard!"
Dourhand Chief says, "Ah, you were a strong foe, Longbeard, but your shield broke in the end."
Dourhand Chief says, "You said you wanted peace, and we gave you peace. Rest in peace, ha ha ha!"

Objective 2

Gellir's shield lies atop his grave in the Dourhand encampment.
It is clear that Gellir and his party were slain. You should recover Gellir's shield and return it to Áskell in Gondamon.

  • Bring Gellir's shield to Áskell
Áskell is in Gondamon, south of the Dourhand encampment.
You have recovered Gellir's shield and should return it to Áskell.
Áskell: 'This is what I feared, but I could not bring myself to admit it. This shield bears mute testimony to the treachery of the Dourhands.
'You have my thanks for these dark tidings.'

The Days Ahead

Bestowal dialogue

'Langlas has indeed done me a great boon by sending this with you. "The Lay of Nimrodel" is a sad story which has bearing upon our plight.
'Please, bring this scroll to Toronn and have him read this passage.' Bregar places a mark beside a stanza and hands you the scroll.
'If this does not make him understand, then we are fated to part.'

Background

Langlas had given you a scroll to bring to Bregar at Duillond. Bregar recognized the poem as the "Lay of Nimrodel" and realized that a passage from the Lay might be enough to convince Toronn to remain in Middle-earth.

Objective 1

Toronn is at Celondim, south of Duillond.
Bregar has asked you to take the scroll to Toronn in the hope that it will convince his brother to remain.
Bregar: 'Speak with my brother Toronn. He is at Celondim to the south.'
Toronn: 'Does Bregar still endeavour to turn aside my path?'
The Elf's eyes widen as he reads the scroll. '"And cursed the faithless ship that bore Him far from Nimrodel...." Though it is a sad tale, this was ever a favourite of mine. It tells of Amroth and Nimrodel, their parting, and the coming of much sadness to Lothlórien, home of our kindred.
'Bregar is right. There is much to be done here before we go. I will not carry my pain aboard the White Ships and bring it to the West. Thank you for helping me to understand, <name>.'

Now is Found

Bestowal dialogue

'I did not think that the sight of this blade would move me so.
'This belonged to a friend of ours, a Dúnadan named Thoram. He died helping us to defend Dol Ringwest many long years ago. We buried him and built a cairn where he fell in honour of his sacrifice. Perhaps Toronn is right; there are many harsh memories here. In the West, we would be free of such pain.
'His sword deserves a better home, away from the goblins that loot the dead. Bring it to Langlas at Thrasi's Lodge, north of here, along the road, and west of Kheledûl. He is a Ranger of the North and will keep well the history of his kinsman.
'I will send word to my brother.'

Background

Toronn desires to leave Middle-earth, while Bregar, his brother, believes they should remain.

Objective 1

Langlas is at the Thrasi's Lodge west of Kheledûl.
Swayed by Toronn's reminder of their lost friend Thoram, Bregar asks you to bring the broken sword to Langlas, a Ranger of the North who will honour the sword and Thoram's memory.
Bregar: 'Take Thoram's sword to Langlas at Thrasi's Lodge, north and west of here.'
Langlas: 'Greetings, good <race>! Bregar sent this, did he? I have heard the story of Thoram and will honour his memory.
'The recovery of Thoram's sword must have arisen from Toronn and Bregar's debate. It has long been a concern of mine that they might leave Middle-earth during these dangerous times.
'Give this to Bregar with my thanks. It may prove useful in convincing his brother to remain.'

Objective 2

Bregar is at Duillond, along the road east and south of the Thrasi's Lodge.
Langlas gratefully accepted Thoram's sword, promising to honour it, then gave you a scroll to deliver to Bregar.
Langlas: 'Take this to Bregar...it may serve Toronn's cause.'
Bregar: 'What is this? A gift from Langlas?'
Bregar unrolls the scroll. '"The Lay of Nimrodel?"
'How could Langlas see this, while my eyes remained blind? This is the Lay of Nimrodel and Amroth who loved her. A storm took Amroth's ship out to sea before Nimrodel could join him, and Nimrodel herself was lost in the mountains to the south upon her journey to the haven of Edhellond in the Bay of Belfalas. Neither were seen again.'

What was Lost

Bestowal dialogue

'Toronn must know that while I remain behind, I will ever be with him. To do this, I will need your aid. So much of this land has been our shelter and teacher and our memories are filled with moments of joy and laughter because of this land.
'I think, perhaps, my brother will appreciate this well enough to see me on my journey as he begins his own. In the ruins of Dol Ringwest, there lies a sword upon a stone cairn, borne once by a Dúnadan we fought beside in defence of our homeland. I may be able to remind my brother of our duty to Middle-earth.
'My duties here will not allow me to leave, but I hope you will see the need I have to seal this rift between my brother and I. Will you help me?'

Background

Toronn desires to leave Middle-earth, while Bregar, his brother, believes they should remain.

Objective 1

  • Search the cairn for the broken sword
The broken sword is upon a stone cairn in the ruins of Dol Ringwest which lie west of Duillond.
Bregar has asked you to search the ruins of Dol Ringwest for the stone cairn and the broken sword it holds, which you should return to Bregar.
Bregar: 'Seek the broken sword at Dol Ringwest, west of here. It is very important!'

Bregar awaits your return in Duillond, east of the ruins of Dol Ringwest.
You recovered a broken sword from a burial cairn in the Elf-ruins of Dol Ringwest.
Bregar: 'This blade means much, broken and dulled as it may be. Alas, the passage of time does little to dull my memories of that battle.
'Perhaps I have underestimated the importance of brothers.'

Leaving Middle-earth

Bestowal dialogue

'Long have my brother and I dwelt upon these shores and much have we seen in that time. Now the time has come for us to leave this place and sail into the West.
'My brother, however, does not see clearly and wishes to remain here. We have always dwelt together, and I could not consider a day in my life without his company and counsel. He is the cord which binds me to this Middle-earth. While he is of a mind to remain, I am forced to wait for him.
'If you would, go to Duillond and see if you can convince Bregar to join me here at Celondim. It is time we begin our journey. The refuge is north along the road.'

Background

Toronn wants to leave Middle-earth and journey into the West to the Undying Lands, but will not leave as long as his brother, Bregar, refuses to leave.

Objective 1

Bregar is at Duillond, north of Celondim.
Toronn has asked you to try to convince Bregar to accompany him into the West.
Toronn: 'Please persuade Bregar that he must leave this place, no matter his feelings towards it.'
Bregar: 'My brother wishes to leave Middle-earth, but I believe it is time for us to stand our ground against the Shadow growing in the East. With your help, perhaps, Toronn will see reason.
'This Middle-earth which we love will soon face great peril, and we are bound to defend it. I cannot yet sail West.'
