Pickthorn's Treasure

Bestowal dialogue

'Let me just...hmmm...find the right page. Ah! Here we go. I see, I see. So, you stand in the field of stumps and...hmmm...take this many paces...and then that many strides...of course! I remember! The Hanging Tree was the south-east-most tree in that bunch. It was standing there closest to the Staddle Falls!
'Now just...hmmm...go back to that Stump field and you'll find that thing you wanted. What was it you wanted, again? You were digging for something, right? Here, take this pickaxe, it'll make it easier to dig. Least I could do, you finding my ledger!'

Background

Mason Thorne's ledger revealed the location of the old Hanging Tree. Now you can search for Ted Pickthorn's treasure.

Objective 1

The southeasternmost stump in the stump field, the one closest to Staddle Falls, was once the Hanging Tree.
After reading through the ledger you recovered for him, Mason Thorne was able to point you to the location of the Hanging Tree.
Mason Thorne: 'I gave you what…hmmm…you wanted to know, didn't I? you whould go find…hmmm…whatever it was.'
Collected Pickthorn's treasure

Objective 2

Ted Pickthorn is on the east side of Combe.
Following Thorne's instructions, you found the stump of the Hanging Tree. You dug up something buried beneath the stump, but it is not what Ted Pickthorn had led you to believe. His father's treasure appears to be a pair of old boots.
Mason Thorne: 'Did you find what you…hmmm…wanted? It looks from your face like you…hmmm…did. Good for you!'
Ted Pickthorn: 'Wh-what are these? These boots were buried beneath the Hanging Tree? Me dad was a villain to the end! "Wealth enough to keep you warm and shod." Shod, indeed!
'Wait... there's something rattling around inside the heel of this one.' Taking a knife from his pocket, Ted slices into the heel, and gold pieces tumble out into his waiting palm.
'Well, I'll be! My dear old dad told me true! "Wealth enough to keep you warm and shod," indeed! You have my thanks, <name>! With this money, I'll be able to get a new start! I'll do better than my dear old dad, you wait and see!'

The Logger's Ledger

Bestowal dialogue

'Maybe the woodcutters at the lumber camp up east of here remember which tree was the Hanging Tree! <name>, you've got to have a word with Mason Thorne, the man in charge there. He just has to remember which o' the stumps used to be the Hanging Tree. He just has to!
'The lumber camp is along the road, north o' the Big House. Please, I need that money to make a new start for meself.'

Background

Ted Pickthorn was greatly distressed when you told him the Hanging Tree and all the trees surrounding it had been chopped down.

Objective 1

Mason Thorne is at the lumber-camp, north and east of the guard-house.
Ted Pickthorn asked you to speak with Mason Thorne, the foreman at the Combe lumber-camp. He may recall which tree had been the hanging tree.
Ted Pickthorn: 'You tell those woodcutters at the lumber-camp that they can't go around chopping down trees willy-nilly like that!
'I realize that the people of Combe depend on the sale of that wood to get by, but this is me dad's legacy we're talking about! How am I ever going to find it now without digging holes up and down the Chetwood?'
Mason Thorne: 'The Hanging Tree? Oh, I remember seeing a few... hmm... hangings in my day. I... hmmm... do believe I wrote the site o' the Hanging Tree down in my ledger. I write down all the things I want to remember. So I can just look it up in...
'Well... hmmm... bless me! I think I dropped my ledger in the woods not far from here. Yes, I remember! We were surprised by some o' those Blackwold, and I droppped my ledger on the road. I'd wager a captain o' those brigands picked it up!'
'There are quite a few campfires to the north and east, along the forested road. You might find my ledger on one o' them Blackwolds! Bring it back here... hmmm... and I'll look up that thing you wanted to know about. A tree, was it?'

Objective 2

  • Collect Mason Thorne's ledger
  • Bring the ledger to Mason Thorne
Mason Thorne awaits you at the lumber camp that lies east and north of Combe, south of the Chetwood.
Thorne sent you to retrieve his ledger from the Blackwold brigands encamped along the road. You should return the ledger to him at once.
Mason Thorne: 'I expect a…hmmm…Blackwold has my ledger. One o' them captains is probably using it to plan their movements in the Chetwood! They're camped to the east. You'll have to get it from them, if you want to know…hmmm…where that tree is.'
Collected Mason Thorne's ledger
Mason Thorne: 'Ah, you found my ledger! Now I can find that...hmmm...thing you wanted!'

Beneath the Hanging Tree

Bestowal dialogue

'Me old dad was a robber some years back and got his hands on a good deal o' riches, as I hear it. Constable caught him, but afore he was hanged, me dad told me where he buried his loot! I never needed it afore now, so I was content to let it stay buried. But I figure it's time to get my hands on "wealth enough to keep you warm and shod," as me dear old dad called it. Can you take this pick-axe and dig the treasure up?
'Just take the road east from Combe to Constable Wren's post up by the guard-house. Climb over the hill on the right and walk down to the riverbank, where the Hanging Tree grows -- it'll have an X carved into it.
'You'll be helping me make a new start of things, and you'll have me everlasting thanks!'

Background

Ted Pickthorn has found himself near penniless and in desperate straits. Rumour of his father's stolen wealth has brought him some hope, however.

Objective 1

  • Find the Hanging Tree
The Hanging Tree sits along the riverbank south of Constable Wren's post, south-east of Combe.
Ted Pickthorn's father was once a robber in the Chetwood and had purportedly garnered a significant amount of wealth. Ted believes his father's ill-gotten gains are buried at the foot of the Hanging Tree. The tree is supposed to be marked with an X.
Ted Pickthorn: 'There arey many other trees around the Hanging Tre. There were more hangings in those days, and they didn't want children seeing too much, so the surrounding trees helped to hid ehte robber-hangings from young eyes.
'Take the road east out of Combe, and at Constable Wren's post, head south. The Hanging Tree is on the downward slope of the hill south of the guard-house, on the bank of te river. You'll kno wit by the X carved into it.'
The grove of trees has been cleared

Objective 2

  • Dig near stumps in the stump field (0/3)
Although there is no way to tell which stump was once the Hanging Tree, it can't hurt to dig near a few of the stumps in search of the treasure.
You find nothing of note near this stump (x 3)

Objective 3

Ted Pickthorn can be found on the east side of Combe.
Ted Pickthorn sent you to retrieve his father's loot from beneath the Hanging Tree, but you discovered that the tree, among others, was chopped down by the woodcutters of Combe. You dug at several places on the field, but found no sign of Pickthorn's buried treasure.
Ted Pickthorn: 'What? They chopped down the Hanging Tree? And ye dug at all the trees with an X? This is terrible! How will I ever find me dad's buried treasure now?'
