Broken Alliance

"After learning of a plot by Sharkey's Men to forge an alliance with the Orcs encroaching into the northern Bree-fields, the Ranger Saeradan sets into motion a plan to break the alliance before it can be established...."

Background

You have found the cave. Now all that remains is to enter it, disperse the brigands and Orcs, and slay their leaders.

Objective 1

Bill Ferny says, "Right. Let's try this again. You Orcs will get half - half! We'll give you half of all the loot we take."
Bill Ferny says, "You will be given White Hand gear and all the food you want. The farmers here are feeding us if they don't want their farms burned."
Bill Ferny says, "Oh yes, Sharkey will protect you from the Iron Crown. Have no fear of that!"
Bill Ferny says, "Remember, you've been cut off. Angmar doesn't care what happens to you. But Sharkey's Men can help you!"
Bill Ferny says, "What the-? Intruders? This will be your first test, Chieftain! I'll talk to you again after you've dealt with these fools!"

A Spear at the Southern March

Bestowal dialogue

"Brigands and half-orcs from the south have been pressing upon the Greenway as of late, threatening the good folk of Bree-town. Objective 2

Toby Thorndyke is at your place in the line of Wardens defending Bree-town from attack from the south.

Toby Thorndyke says, "Keep the line, <name>!"
Toby Thorndyke says, "Maintain the line, Wardens!"

Southern Ruffian says, "A pox on these Wardens!"

'I'd like to see those brigands try this again; they thought that the ability to wield a blade would be enough to challenge a line of Wardens? Are they mad? They must be!'
Andrew Oakhurst: 'Let us return to Bree, <name>, and we will discuss some of the finer points of your performance during the attack.'

Unravelling the Thread

Bestowal Dialog

Objective 1

Strider and his kinsmen, Torthann and Lenglinn, have led you to the outskirts of the brigand camp. Strider beckons to you.
Torthann: 'I yearn to put an end to these brigands, but you should speak to Strider first. he is directing our efforts.'
Strider: 'Can you feel the chill in the air? It is no natural cold, but the chill of fear, of evil. I doubt not that Amdir is here, but there is a greater evil as well.
'We should split our strength. For the good of Middle-earth, none can be allowed to escape. Lenglinn and I will look for another way inside, while you and Torthann search for Amdir.
'We must be quick now, before the evil bursts forth from here and threatens all of Bree-land.'
Lenglinn says, "Amdir's terror must end now!"
Strider says, "It is time for us to act."
Strider says, "Torthann, take <name> with you and head to the main gate."
Strider says, "Lenglinn and I shall look for another entrance and press the attack from there."
Torthann says, "Yes, sir."
Strider says, "Good. Lenglinn, let us go."

Objective 2

  • Help Torthann enter the Blackwold camp
Strider told you to speak with Torthann when you are ready to begin your search for Amdir. Strider and Lenglinn will find a back way in.
Torthann: 'Come with me. It is time to deal with Amdir and these brigands. If Amdir escapes, it could spell doom for Middle-earth.'
Torthann says, "Let us go! We must find Amdir!"
Torthann says, "Wait! Someone is coming. Let us see who it is!"
Blackwold Enforcer says, "What were those things? That dwarf has gone mad!"
Torthann says, "Brigands! Get them!"
Torthann says, "Onwards! We must find Amdir!"
Blackwold Enforcer says, "Die, in the name of the Blakwold!"

Torthann says, "Let me see about this gate."

Objective 4

  • Discover what is causing the brigands's fear

Skorgrím says, "Why are you so worried, Blackwold?
Blackwold Informant says, "What do you want with me! I don't know anything!"
Blackwold Informant says, "No, no, no! Stay away!"
Skorgrím says, "There, there now. There's no need for concern...yet."
Skorgrím says, "Did you think service to Angmar came without a cost?"
Skorgrím says, "Ah! I have found them after all. You are relieved of your obligations, Blackwold."
Skorgrím says, "Now, to deal with you, Ranger!"

Objective 5

  • Defend Torthann as he searches for the evil in the brigands's camp
Torthann sensed the source of the brigands' fear in the southern corner of the camp. You should investigate.
Skorgrím says, "I have other business to deal with...my servant shall deal with you!"
Blackwold Informant says, "No, no, no! Stay away!"

Objective 6

  • Speak with Torthann
Torthann sensed the source of the brigands' fear in the southern corner of the camp. You should investigate.
Torthann: 'Who was that dwarf and what power has he to command wights? That the Blackwolds were in terror of that creature is certain, but I still sense something greater still in these ruins.
'And where is Amdir? Perhaps beyond that gate.'
Torthann says, "Come friend, this is not the end of our business here!"
Torthann says, "I fear that foul dwarf is not the end of the evil here."
Torthann says, "The greatest evils may be behind this gate. Rest now, for we will need all our strength ahead!"

Objective 7

  • Defend Torthann as he searches for Amdir

Nazgûl says, "Amdir is now a servant of the Great Eye!"
Nazgûl says, "Now, Amdir! Take on the robes of the Cargûl -- the Foresworn!"
Éogan says, "My Lords! The Rangers approach with fire!"
Nazgûl says, "The fools are too late. Amdir's change is nearly complete!"
Nazgûl says, "Come, brethren, we must leave. Now is not the time for such a fight."
Nazgûl says, "We leave Amdir and these fools in your care, Éogan!"
Éogan says, "Yes, my lord!"
Strider says, "You do not belong here, Nazgûl!"
Éogan says, "We do your bidding, Master!"
Lenglinn says, "Do not let them escape!"
Amdir says, "You are too late! I am Cargûl! I serve the Great Eye!"
Torthann says, "I am sorry, Amdir...be at peace...."

Objective 8

  • Speak with Torthann
Torthann beckons to you.
Torthann: 'It is a day both dreary and joyous. It grieves me that we were forced to slay Amdir, but a relief that he should now know peace.
'I will lead you back to Strider. I will return to my camp.'
Torthann: 'The very air seems polluted by this night's business. We should tarry here no longer.'

An Eye in the Storm

Bestowal Dialogue

"The view from Weathertop is wide, and many have climbed that great hill to see all that could be seen. You have been brought hither to learn of the subtle influences connecting runes with nature, for words and speech-craft hold much sway over many powers in Middle-earth."

Background

You have come with Techeryn to Weathertop, where a tremendous storm swirls around the summit, to unravel some of the mystery surrounding runes and their connexion to the natural world.

Objective 1

Techeryn is standing on the path that winds up to the summit of Weathertop.
Techeryn is waiting to speak with you.
Techeryn: 'I have given you three stones, <name>, upon which I have inscribed a rune. I want you to climb to the summit of the hill and place them on three flat stones at the very top. You must then wait, Rune-keeper, for lightning to strike each of the rune-stones.
'Why the dismayed expression, <name>? You doubt this will happen? I am confident that it will.
'Be wary, for I have seen evidence of Orcs prowling in these parts of late.'
Techeryn says, "Look for suitable stones on the summit, but beware of prowling Orcs!"

Objective 2

  • Place rune-stones on flat stones upon Weathertop's summit (0/3)
Three flat stones can be found on the summit of Weathertop.
Techeryn has asked you to place three rune-stones on flat stones on the summit of Weathertop, and to wait for each of them to be struck by lightning.
Techeryn: 'Place the three rune-stones I have given you upon the flat stones on the summit of Weathertop. Once you have placed all three, you must wait for them each to be struck by lightning.
'Why do you doubt that this is possible, <name>? Do you deny that runes have some connecxion with the natural world?;

Objective 3

  • Wait for lightning to strike all three of the rune-stones
Techeryn has assured you that lightning will strike all three of the rune-stones you have placed on the summit of Weathertop, and you are not to return to her until it does.
You should collect the rune-stones now that they have all been struck with lightning

Objective 4

Lightning has struck each of the three rune-stones you placed on the summit, and you should now collect them all again.
The stone still smokes from the impact of the lightning, but the rune remains the only marking

Objective 5

  • Bring rune-stones to Techeryn
Techeryn has come to the summit of Weathertop, and is waiting to speak with you.
Techeryn says, "<name>, over here!"
Techeryn: 'You have done well, <name>: not only to fulfil my instructions, but also in dispatching the Orcs!
'Look at this! Though each of these runes was struck directly by a bolt of lightning from the heavens, the only marking upon the stones remains the rune I carved on each of them before giving them to you: the rune for "thunder-bolt."
'Can you need any further proof than this that there is a power in the way we describe the natural world? Let us return to the Inn, <name>, and we can further discuss what this means as we descend.'
Techeryn: 'Are you ready to go, <name>? Let us remove ourselves from the storm.'

To a Ranger's Aid

Bestowal dialogue

"Amdir, quickly falling into the shadows of the wraith-world, has slain two of his brethren already and seeks the blood of a third...."

Background

Upon entering the Mustering Cave, you found that you were too late to help the Ranger Mundol. Amdir had mortally wounded him. Mundol asked that you carry a warning to Reniolind, a young Ranger scholar who is studying the ruins of the old Marshwater Fort.

Objective 1

Reniolind is somewhere within the Marshwater Fort, west of the Mustering Cave.
With his dying breath, the Ranger Mundol begged you to save Reniolind, another of his kindred, from Amdir's murderous rampage.
Reniolind: 'Toradan and Mundol have both perished? This is almost beyond belief! I was sent here to keep watch after the Nazgûl drove us from the Shire, but now it appears my watch has been for naught.
'We must go at once to the chieftain of my kindred. The Bree-men call him Strider.
'There is a quicker path than the one you took back to the safety of Bree. Follow me, and I will lead you through the caves beneath the Marshes.'
  • Escort Reniolind through the caves
Reniolind says, "This way! Hurry!"
Reniolind says, "Did the water stifle these flames?"
Reniolind says, "These torches always seem to fail..."
Reniolind says, "I lit these torches just yesterday."
Reniolind says, "Let me see to this darkness before us..."
Reniolind says, "Did you hear something?"
Reniolind says, "Amdir!"
Reniolind says, "Amdir, my friend. I know it is not really you that does these things..."
Amdir says, "I am not what you once believed..."
Reniolind says, "Yes... yes, you are."
Reniolind says, "Let me help you..."
Amdir says, "Never!"
Reniolind says, "No..."

Objective 2

Amdir was hiding in the deepest depths of the ruins and struck down Reniolind, then turned his attention to you.
Amdir says, "Morin will deal with you!"

Objective 3

Amdir called forth a giant spider-queen before fleeing. Kill the spider and speak with the dying Ranger.
Defeated Morin

Objective 4

Reniolind: 'Amdir is running...free! Go at once...find Strider in Bree. He is...my chieftain and should be...made aware of all that has...happened. Talk to Barliman Butterbur...at the Prancing Pony. He will know...where Aragorn is.
'Take the door...from this room and you...will find yourself on the...western edge of the Midgewater...Marshes. Go west...from there, then south and west...along the road to Bree.'

The Hideout

"The hunt for Amdir leads to the hideout of the brigand Skunkwood, but to what end is unknown...."

Background

Toradan sent you to Skunkwood's hideout to rescue Amdir and put an end to the Blackwolds' mischief.

Objective 1

  • Speak to the Blackwold guard
Speak to the Blackwold guard. If your ruse is successful, he should give you access to the hideout.
Toradan sent you to Skunkwood's hideout to rescue Amdir and put an end to the Blackwolds' mischief.
Blackwold Guard: The Blackwold guard stares up at you from beneath a furrowed brow. He spits onto the ground and studies your face for a few seconds before giving you a wry and sinister smile.
Blackwold Guard says, "You must be the new blood Ellie was talking about."
Blackwold Guard says, "You'll find Skunkwood in the back."

Objective 2

Skunkwood resides somewhere within the hideout.
You have tricked your way into the Blackwolds' hideout. Now you must find Skunkwood and speak with him to learn the whereabouts of Amdir.
William Skunkwood: 'Ah, so you're the one I've heard so much about from Ellie. We lost a lot of good men in Archet, and I'll be glad to have you in the fold.
'You say you've heard about that Ranger? I have to tell you, what is happening to that fellow is plain unnatural. Éogan tells me he'll be a great boon to us, but for now he's just a raving madman.
'I don't mind letting you go take a peek in on him. He's down in the dungeon at the far end of the caverns. My man there will let you pass.'

Objective 3

Amdir lies in the dungeons at the far end of the Blackwold hideout.
Skunkwood told you that Amdir was locked away and that what as happening to him seemed unnatural. You should find Amdir quickly.
Blackwold Ruffian says, "Skunkwood says it's all right. I'll let you pass."
Blackwold Ruffian says, "I'd be careful though, that Amdir's a dangerous one."

Objective 4

  • Talk to Amdir
You have discovered Amdir and found that he has partially transformed into a wraith. He stopped raving at the sight of you, so perhaps there is still some hope for him.
Amdir says, "Make it stop! Make it stop!"
Amdir says, "You...I know you...."
Amdir: 'The wound...it is so cold...
'The voice...the voice speaks to me. Commands me. Tells me things. Tells me about the end of all things...the beginning of new things. It calls me...it calls me to service...
'I must do what it says...must follow... I serve...I must serve the Dark Lord...'
Amdir says, "The voice...make it stop!"
Amdir says, "No...no...no..."
Amdir says, "NO!'
Amdir says, "Escape...I must ...."

Objective 5

An old woman in the back of the cell that held Amdir called to you for help. You should help her escape.
Whatever is happening to Amdir, it has driven him completely mad, and he is far more powerful than he first seemed. His deafening scream momentarily stunned you and threw open his cell door.
Sara Oakheart says, "Come here, quickly!"
Sara Oakheart says, "Help me! Please!"
Sara Oakheart: 'Oh, thank you for coming to save me, young one! I have been held captive here for a long time! I have seen many things, and if you would be so kind as to help me out of this dungeon, I would be able to tell you a bit of what happened to your friend Amdir.'

Objective 6

  • Help Sara Oakheart out of the cave
Sara Oakheart says, "It will be good to see the sky again! Let us get going, shall we?"
Sara Oakheart says, "They took something very important from me, friend: my stick! I need to go get it!"
Sara Oakheart says, "There's the chest they put it in!"
Sara Oakheart says, "My stick. I would be lost without it."
William Skunkwood says, "Traitor! You freed the prisoners!"
William Skunkwood says, "Kill them!"

Objective 7

Try to help Toradan defeat Amdir.
As neared the entrance of the Blackwold Hideout, you encountered Toradan and Amdir.
Sara Oakheart says, "Goodness, it sounds like there's trouble ahead!"
You have safely escorted Sara Oakheart
Toradan says, "Amdir!"
Toradan says, "By the Valar! It is too late!"
Amdir says, "...the void..."
Amdir says, "The morgul-blade...the voice...the Eye...."
Toradan says, "All of you! Stay back! It is too late for him!"
Toradan says, "I am sorry, my friend, but I must end this...."
Amdir says, "...end this? Kill me?"
Amdir says, "Is this the compassion of the Dúnedain?"
Amdir says, "The voice...the voice told the truth!"
Amdir says, "I shall end you, Toradan, my brother..."
Toradan says, "AAAH!"
Amdir says, "...and every other Ranger as well!"
Toradan says, "Uhhh...."

Objective 8

  • Speak to Toradan
After helping Sara Oakheart out of the Blackwold hideout, Toradan entered and saw what had become of Amdir. Seeing his kinsman too far gone to help, Toradan attempted to slay him, but was instead himself stricken down.
You should speak with Toradan before he perishes.
Toradan: Toradan coughs up blood. 'Amdir is...beyond saving now. You must warn...my kindred....
'Mundol is in the Mustering Cave of the Rangers. He...help him....
'Go to Underhill...ask him if...if Tanglerush delivered my message...'

Objective 9

  • Speak to Sara Oakheart
Toradan spoke about Amdir trying to kill the other Rangers and asked you to speak with Constable Underhill about a message he sent to someone named Tanglerush.
Before leaving the hideout, however, you should speak to Sara Oakheart again to see if she needs any further help.
Sara Oakheart: 'Goodness me, what a terrible sight for these old eyes! The blade that stung Amdir has done it's work, and I fear he's nothing more than a servant of the Enemy now. You should try and stop him, if you can.
'And don't worry about me. Now that I'm free of that awful cell, I'll be fine. And I've gotten my stick back. Don't know what I'd done without it.'
Sara Oakheart says, "You have done me a great service this day."

Avorthal says, "I am sure we will, my friend."'
Longbeard-guardian says, "A fine hit!"
Longbeard-guardian says, "Save some goblins for me!"

Mathi Stouthand says, "Sappers!"
Mathi Stouthand says, "Well done!"
Longbeard-champion says, "I have returned with reinforcements, Mathi!"
Mathi Stouthand says, "The day is not won yet, though. There are more goblins ahead."
Mathi Stouthand says, "You should rest a moment, though, before pressing ahead."
Avorthal says, "I think you are right. Let us rest a while."

Objective 2

  • Speak to Avorthal
Avorthal seeks Skorgrím Dourhand inside the goblin-infested vale of Rath Teraig.

Elf-hunter says, "Avorthal! The goblins have captured a woman."
Elf-champion says, "Your father led some Elves and dwarves to rescue Sara Oakheart. He never returned."

'Perhaps we will find my father up ahead and can lend him our aid, though I am sure he has little need of our blades.'
  • Aid Avorthal
Avorthal says, "This way!"
Avorthal says, "There she is! Quickly, we must save her!"
Sara Oakheart says, "Thank you, dear. I felt sure I would meet my end at the hands of those awful goblins!"
Avorthal says, "You are most welcome. You should leave this place at once!"
Avorthal says, "Now <name>, let us find Skorgrím and finish this!"
Avorthal says, "Father!"
Cardavor says, "Avorthal, no! Stay back!"
Cardavor says, "It is a trap!"
Skorgrím Dourhand says, "Hold, my friends."
Skorgrím Dourhand says, "This has been an amusing exercise, but now it is over. Ered Luin is weak, and that is enough."
Skorgrím Dourhand says, "I have business now in Bree-land. War is coming, and soon all of Middle-earth shall burn."
Avorthal says, "You are defeated, Skorgrím! The dwarves and the Elves stand against you!"
Skorgrím Dourhand says, "Now you can kill them."
Avorthal says, "More enemies are upon us!"
Avorthal says, "Our fight is not yet at its end!"
Avorthal says, "Be on your guard! Our enemies continue their attack!"
Avorthal says, "Father, how badly are you hurt?"
Cardavor says, "Do not worry about me, my son. I fear for the lands to the south."

  • Speak to Avorthal
Skorgrím Dourhand has escaped. Avorthal is waiting to speak with you regarding the course you should take next.
Avorthal: 'Skorgrím has escaped, <name>, but I think Ered Luin will be safe from him now...at least for a time. For that, I feel the combined assault of dwarves and Elves was a success.
'It will be a long while before we know the full cost of our actions here. Many good people have fallen in Rath Teraig this day.
'I will tend to my father's wounds, and then together we can report to Langlas and tell him what has happened here today.'
Avorthal: 'We should now return to Langlas.'
