A Spear at the Southern March

Bestowal dialogue

"Brigands and half-orcs from the south have been pressing upon the Greenway as of late, threatening the good folk of Bree-town. You have been enlisted to join the line of Wardens who march against these foes, for brigands possess a chaotic nature, and will not stand against such organized defence."

Background

You have agreed to join the line of Wardens defending the approach to Bree-town from a band of brigands approaching from the south.

Objective 1

Andrew Oakhurst is behind the line of Wardens south of Bree-town.
Warden Oakhurst is waiting to speak with you.
Andrew Oakhurst: 'I am glad you agreed to aid us, <name>, for there is a gap in our line, and I would have it filled.
'Speak with Toby Thorndyke, just ahead, and he will show you to your spot in the line.
'It is very important that you not abandon your place in the line once the attack begins! An organized defence is our best weapon against bands of brigands such as the one that approaches.'
Andrew Oakhurst says, "Take up your position next to Toby Thorndyke, <name>."

Objective 2

Toby Thorndyke is at your place in the line of Wardens defending Bree-town from attack from the south.
Toby Thorndyke: 'You are to be my ally in the defence, <name>? I am glad to hear it!
'I will show you the bounds of our position. You must not stray beyond these bounds during the attack, my friend! The line must not be compromised!'
  • Maintain your position in the line and defend Toby Thorndyke
Toby Thorndyke says, "We must hold our position in the line, <name>."
Toby Thorndyke says, "Our section of the line is from this tree..."
Toby Thorndyke says, "...to this stone."
Toby Thorndyke says, "A good Warden does not stray from his position in the line!"
Andrew Oakhurst says, "Prepare for battle!"
Toby Thorndyke says, "Keep the line, <name>!"
Toby Thorndyke says, "Maintain the line, Wardens!"
Toby Thorndyke says, "Steady! Do not abandon your places!"
Southern Ruffian says, "Run away! We cannot beat them!"
Southern Ruffian says, "A pox on these Wardens!"
Southern Ruffian says, "A pox on these Wardens!"
Toby Thorndyke says, "Hold the line, <name>!"
Toby Thorndyke says, "Hold, <name>! Do not let the line falter!"
The attack has been repelled

Objective 3

  • Talk to Andrew Oakhurst
Andrew Oakhurst is behind the line of Wardens south of Bree-town.
The attack has been successfully repelled, and you should speak now to Warden Oakhurst.
Andrew Oakhurst: 'Valiantly done, <name>! You have done us all a great service and are deserving of the highest praise for your role in holding the line!
'I'd like to see those brigands try this again; they thought that the ability to wield a blade would be enough to challenge a line of Wardens? Are they mad? They must be!'
Andrew Oakhurst: 'Let us return to Bree, <name>, and we will discuss some of the finer points of your performance during the attack.'

A Spear at the Southern March

Bestowal dialogue

'The spear is very often favoured by Wardens, <name>, but its art is not easily mastered. A skilled teacher is needed to get the most from such a weapon and to make use of its advanced techniques.
'Andrew Oakhurst of Bree often leads the Wardens of Bree-land in practice skirmishes aimed at improving their skills with the spear. You should speak to Warden Oakhurst at the West-gate of Bree-town if you wish to engage in one of these practices.'

Background

Wardens often favour the spear, and truly effective spear-use is something that must be taught by one who has used it often and well in many battles.

Objective 1

Andrew Oakhurst is by the West-gate of Bree.
You have been told to speak to Andrew Oakhurst about participating in the spear-training that he often runs for Wardens in Bree-land.
Warden Trainer: 'Andrew Oakhurst of Bree often leads the Wardens of Bree-land in practice skirmishes aimed at improving their skills with the spear. You should speak to Warden Oakhurst at the West-gate of Bree-town if you wish to engage in one of these practices.'
Andrew Oakhurst: 'You seek training to better your offensive skills, friend Warden? I have not prepared a practice skirmish.
'No, do not leave just yet! There is no practice skirmish because there is a very real threat that approaches from the south: a band of brigands has managed to obtain some level of organization, and prepares to attack Bree-town!
'You will receive no better training as a Warden than by passing through the crucible of battle, my friend. If you will join my line, I can personally assure that you will learn much of value.'

Objective 2

Andrew Oakhurst is at the West-gate of the town of Bree.
A band of brigands march on Bree from the south, and Andrew Oakhurst has asked you to join his line of Wardens in repelling them.
Andrew Oakhurst: 'Will you join my line, <name>? It will require discipline and toughness, but as a Warden these are characteristics you should already have!'
Complete the Instance: A Spear at the Southern March quest.

Objective 3

  • Talk to Andrew Oakhurst
Andrew Oakhurst is at the West-gate of Bree.
You have stood in the line that defended Bree from attack and should speak now with Warden Oakhurst.
Andrew Oakhurst: 'You performed admirably well, <name>, and are welcome on my line whenever you care to serve.
'I believe you will find the experience has given you a chance to refine your skills and test your discipline, a chance at which every Warden would rejoice!'
