An Eye in the Storm

Bestowal Dialogue

"The view from Weathertop is wide, and many have climbed that great hill to see all that could be seen. You have been brought hither to learn of the subtle influences connecting runes with nature, for words and speech-craft hold much sway over many powers in Middle-earth."

Background

You have come with Techeryn to Weathertop, where a tremendous storm swirls around the summit, to unravel some of the mystery surrounding runes and their connexion to the natural world.

Objective 1

Techeryn is standing on the path that winds up to the summit of Weathertop.
Techeryn is waiting to speak with you.
Techeryn: 'I have given you three stones, <name>, upon which I have inscribed a rune. I want you to climb to the summit of the hill and place them on three flat stones at the very top. You must then wait, Rune-keeper, for lightning to strike each of the rune-stones.
'Why the dismayed expression, <name>? You doubt this will happen? I am confident that it will.
'Be wary, for I have seen evidence of Orcs prowling in these parts of late.'
Techeryn says, "Look for suitable stones on the summit, but beware of prowling Orcs!"

Objective 2

  • Place rune-stones on flat stones upon Weathertop's summit (0/3)
Three flat stones can be found on the summit of Weathertop.
Techeryn has asked you to place three rune-stones on flat stones on the summit of Weathertop, and to wait for each of them to be struck by lightning.
Techeryn: 'Place the three rune-stones I have given you upon the flat stones on the summit of Weathertop. Once you have placed all three, you must wait for them each to be struck by lightning.
'Why do you doubt that this is possible, <name>? Do you deny that runes have some connecxion with the natural world?;

Objective 3

  • Wait for lightning to strike all three of the rune-stones
Techeryn has assured you that lightning will strike all three of the rune-stones you have placed on the summit of Weathertop, and you are not to return to her until it does.
You should collect the rune-stones now that they have all been struck with lightning

Objective 4

Lightning has struck each of the three rune-stones you placed on the summit, and you should now collect them all again.
The stone still smokes from the impact of the lightning, but the rune remains the only marking

Objective 5

  • Bring rune-stones to Techeryn
Techeryn has come to the summit of Weathertop, and is waiting to speak with you.
Techeryn says, "<name>, over here!"
Techeryn: 'You have done well, <name>: not only to fulfil my instructions, but also in dispatching the Orcs!
'Look at this! Though each of these runes was struck directly by a bolt of lightning from the heavens, the only marking upon the stones remains the rune I carved on each of them before giving them to you: the rune for "thunder-bolt."
'Can you need any further proof than this that there is a power in the way we describe the natural world? Let us return to the Inn, <name>, and we can further discuss what this means as we descend.'
Techeryn: 'Are you ready to go, <name>? Let us remove ourselves from the storm.'

An Eye in the Storm

Bestowal dialogue

You have taken your first steps down the long road of understanding the power of runes and language, <name>, but your next few steps will not be as easy. Runes can describe actions and occurrences in the world and in nature, but so too can nature affect the words that describe it.
An Elf named Techeryn sometimes travels to The Forsaken Inn on the western edge of the Lone-lands. She will be able to instruct you further about the connexion between such things.'

Background

In order to prove yourself a learned and able Rune-keeper, there are mysteries of language and of nature you must dissolve.

Objective 1

Techeryn is often outside The Forsaken Inn, on the western edge of the Lone-lands.
You have been told to speak with Techeryn, an Elf who can give you more insight into the interplay between runes and the natural world.
Rune-keeper Trainer: 'An elf named Techeryn sometimes travels to The Forsaken Inn on the western edge of the Lone-lands. She will be able to instruct you further about the connexion between runes and the natural world.'
Techeryn: I can teach you more about the relationship between the runes and the natural world, <name>, but it may not be an easy lesson.
'Consider the fury of a storm in the mountains: it fumes and roils, full of wrath. Now think on the rune that describes the storm. Does it capture the meaning of the storm? Its anger, or its motion?
'Let the storm inscribe its power on the runes that describe it, <name>. You must come with me if you are to learn this lesson. Speak with me when you are ready.'

Objective 2

Techeryn is outside The Forsaken Inn, on the western edge of the Lone-lands.
The Rune-keeper Techeryn has agreed to entangle more mysteries of runes and is waiting to speak with you.
Techeryn: 'Are you ready for my lesson, <name>? We will travel to Weathertop and wait for a storm to arise. My lesson awaits on the summit.'
This is a Solo quest, and cannot be completed with a Fellowship.
Complete the Instance: An Eye in the Storm quest.

Objective 3

  • Talk to Techeryn at The Forsaken Inn
Techeryn is outside The Forsaken Inn, on the western edge of the Lone-lands.
Your experience on Weathertop with Techeryn has taught you some more about the interplay between runes and the natural world. The Elf is waiting to speak with you about the experience.
Techeryn: 'You saw the markings the lightning left on the rune-stones, <name>; I cannot explain them, except to say that the words we use to describe certain events, and the runes we use to describe those words, did not arise by accident.
'There is power in even the smallest of words, even such power as you beheld in the clouds of the storm atop Amon Sul.
'You will be more adept at wielding this power in the future, <name>. Indeed, you are better at it already, though you may not have observed this to be so!'
