Brigands and Half-orcs

Bestowal dialogue

'Grimbriar was right to send us here, but we figured more support would arrive once he realized that we could not submit reports. Your news of what is happening in the north makes it clear that the brigands are moving in with the caravans they let through.
'Those unlucky enough not to have the coin to pay for passage are treated without civility, their lives forfeit, and their goods claimed by these vile creatures. Your information confirms what we have feared. The swarthy fellows among their numbers are half-orcs, foul beasts!
'The time has come to strike back for every life these beasts have claimed. Strike out into the ruins and scourge this enemy clean. I will see you paid handsomely.'

Background

Watcher Brittleleaf's concerns over the brigands at the Southwatch are bolstered by the sheer number of enemies crawling about the ruins. He has asked you to strike back at the enemy, lowering the strength and providing the Watchers of Bree with a fair chance to protect the countryside.

Objective 1

  • Defeat brigands and half-orcs in Andrath (0/20)
Half-orcs and brigands can be found in the ruins of Andrath.
Watcher Brittleleaf is enraged by the actions of the brigands and half-orcs holding the ruins of the Southwatch and wants you to strike a decisive blow against them.
Watcher Brittleleaf: 'I will see these beasts paid back in the blood they have spilled. Visit our vengeance upon them.'
Watcher Oakdale: 'I cannot fathom the terror that caravans must feel as they approach this place. I fear we cannot hold this tide back for long. Bree-land will need to seek allies elsewhere.'

Objective 2

Watcher Brittleleaf and Watcher Oakdale can be found hidden to the east of the northern end of the ruins.
You brought justice to the fiends in the ruins of Southwatch and should return to Watcher Brittleleaf.
Watcher Brittleleaf: 'We cannot restore those who were taken, but we can rest in knowing that some manner of justice has been served.
'I cannot say that the future of Bree-land is brighter, as even now I see that the numbers of this enemy swells to restore those purged. Bree-land is in grave danger from this Sharkey fellow.'

The Vale of Andrath

Bestowal dialogue

'The Vale of Andrath is Bree-land's gateway to the South. The South Downs, Dunland, Isengard, the Gap of Rohan -- all would be closed to Bree-land if the brigands are not hindered. It is clear that Sharkey is no mere brigand-leader. He has employed half-breeds to fill his ranks, a wholly depraved act.
'I sent my men to watch the ruins at Andrath and fear they may now be prisoners or worse. Please, head south beyond the Greenway Crossing, further beyond the shadow of the barrows, and seek my scouts, Oakdale and Brittleleaf. Hopefully they will have found a safe place close to the ruins, likely on the eastern side.
'Be swift, for I fear the worst, and bring caution with you! That's likely to be a bad place.'

Background

Sharkey's Men and their half-orc allies from the South have blockaded the Vale of Andrath, inhibiting trade with the southern nations.

Objective 1

  • Find and speak with Grimbriar's scouts
The brigand-encampment is at the southern end of the Vale of Andrath, south down the Greenway, far beyond the Greenway Crossing. Grimbriar's men, Watchers Brittleaf and Oakdale, will be hidden somewhere nearby.
Watcher Grimbriar has learned that Sharkey's Men and their half-orc allies have blockaded the Vale of Andrath. He has asked you to travel south to support his men.
Chief Watcher Grimbriar: 'Make haste to Andrath inthe south along the Greenway. I fear I may have sent my men there ill-prepared to deal with this growing threat.'
Watcher Brittleleaf: 'Grimbriar finally sent support? We have been wondering if he had forgotten us.
'When we arrived, we found a far larger force than anticipated and knew that we could not desert the post. Already we have seen these fiends performing terrible acts.
'We must remain resolute and carry out our duties.'

A Blade of Renown

Ultan Foebane: 'You say you're a champion, <name>, but I have to tell you that I've never heard of you. What great deeds have you performed? None that I have seen, and still there is great danger in the surrounding countryside!
'I will recognize you as a champion only if you can slay three of the evils that threaten this town of Men. I give you their names and their favourite haunts and ask only that you end them and return to me!
'With the use of these notes, a real champion would be able to bring safety to these lands and inspire the people with word of his deeds.'
Collected Ultan Foebane's Notes

Objective 2

Ultan Foebane has given you a list containing the locations of three deadly enemies to dispatch.
To prove you are a worthy champion, Ultan Foebane has tasked you with slaying three threats to the folk of Bree-land.
Ultan Foebane: 'I gave you my notes on the locations of three deadly foes, <name>. Dispatch these oppoonents and return and I will give you some small measure of training! Are you a champion or are you not.'
Zhurpukh of the Deeps says, "Zhurpukh not let you pass!"
Defeated Zhurpukh of the Deeps
Fair Sherman says, "You cannot defeat Fair Sherman!"
Defeated Fair Sherman
Morley the Fierce says, "It's over for you!"

'Zhurpukh of the Deeps will no more sneak from the marshes in search of open windows and unlatched doors! Fair Sherman? More lovely in death, they say! And of Morley the Fierce, the people say only this -- that he was not fierce enough to best <name>, a worthy champion indeed!
'The people in this town of Men speak the truth, friend champion. I will give you some measure of instruction in the fighting arts, the better to improve the strikes you make at your enemies!'

A Blade For a Life

Bestowal dialogue

'Oh, it's terrible! Blake, the brigand-captain who wanted the sword, came and told me he knew Nate was dead and that he knew I had something to do with it! I tried to tell him I didn't, that I would have another sword for him soon, but he wouldn't listen. He said he's taken my daughter, Maribell! If I don't give him another sword, and soon, he'll kill her!
'You must save her! Please! Get the sword from Lofar, then go to Blake's camp. It's in the Bree-fields, up north of Bree. I'm sure he'll release my daughter when he has the sword.'
'Please hurry! I don't know what I'll do if they harm her... You should bring a few seasoned warriors with you - Blake's men are rutheless!'

Background

While you were gathering the materials Kenton needed to finish his work for Lofar Ironband, the brigand Blake took Kenton's daughter captive.

Objective 1

Lofar can be found at the stone cottage north of the Bree crossroads.
Kenton Thistleway told you that Blake, the brigand-captain, will kill his daughter, unless he gets a new sword. Kenton has asked you to retrieve the sword from Lofar.
Kenton Thistleway: 'Have you gotten the sword from Lofar yet? Please hurry, my daughter's life is at stake!'
Lofar Ironband: 'Those accursed brigands took Thistleway's daughter? This is bad. This sword isn't ready yet! And I know these types of fellows. They won't take "no" for an answer. They'll kill that girl!
'You'll have to mount a rescue and free Kenton's daughter! Hurry now! And gather friends...I fear you'll need them to face Blake!'

Objective 2

Blake's brigand camp is in the Bree-fields, north-west of Bree-town.
When you spoke with Lofar, he told you that the sword was not ready yet. He urged you to go to Blake's brigand camp and try to convince the brigand-captain not to harm Kenton's daughter. The sword will be ready soon. He also suggested you take friends in case there was trouble.
Lofar Ironband: 'Don't dawdle here! Go to the Brigand's Watch and rescue that poor girl! Hurry now!'
Maribell Thistleway: 'Thank you, thank you! I filched the key a while ago, but I was too scared to use it. Now, with you here, I can use it, and we can escape.
'Hopefuly we can get away before Blake notices!'
Maribell Thistleway says, "Quick! Follow me! With Blake dead, we can make our escape!"
You have rescued Maribell
Maribell Thistleway says, "Thank you! I think I can make it back to Bree from here!"

Objective 3

Kenton Thistleway resides among the smiths in Bree, not far from the West-gate.
Blake, the brigand-captain, took Kenton Thistleway's daughter, Maribell, captive. You rescued Maribell, who has returned to Bree. You should return to Kenton with news of your success.
Lofar Ironband: 'Aye, good tidings! Glad no harm came to the lass. While you were away, I went over and collected the work from Kenton, and I must say that I think that Man has the hands of a dwarf. The work was excellent quality, so much so that I think I'll get double for it. I told him he could expect more work from me in the future.
'Seems my kind heart lead me to a good find. Thanks to you, that is.'
Kenton Thistleway: 'Oh, bless you! You've returned my daughter safe to me! I can't thank you enough! You've done so much for me, in more ways than you know!
'While you were away, I busied myself with Lofar's work. I had to do something to being myself overcome with worry. No sooner had I finished the wrok, than Lofar came over to collect it. He seemed pleased with it -- even admitted that it came close to dwarf-work! He promised to send me more work in the future!
'<name>, you've saved my family and given me a hope for a brighter future. I can't thank you enough!'

Sharkey's Plan

Bestowal dialogue

'With your help we draw ever closer to shutting out this upstart, Sharkey. We are closing in more and more on his location and the size of his force.
'We now know that the Brigands' Watch, to the west of here in the foothills of Bree-land, is a staging ground for future assaults. The brigands' captain hands out orders from Sharkey himself to his lieutenants.
'Likely they are kept somewhere safe: a lockbox or even on his person. We need those orders. Head to the Brigands' Watch and get those orders.'

Background

Sharkey's Men have holed up in a camp they call Brigands' Watch. Saeradan wants you to go there and gather information about Sharkey and his plans.

Objective 1

  • Search the brigand-captain's tent
Brigands' Watch sits on a hill north of Adso's camp, and directly west of Grimbriar's Post. Watcher Grimbriar is at his post near the crossroads of Bree.
Grimbriar has instructed you to search the tent of the brigand-captain at Brigands' Watch to find any correspondance from Sharkey that may divulge information about his plans.
Chief Watcher Grimbriar: 'Could you not find the Brigands' Watch? It is almost due north of Adso's camp and west of here. Any correspondance between this Sharkey and his men would likely be found there. Search the brigand-captain's tent and bring me anything you find.'
Collected a stained letter

Objective 2

Brigands' Watch sits on a hill north of Adso's camp, and directly west of Grimbriar's Post. Watcher Grimbriar is at his post near the crossroads of Bree.
Grimbriar has instructed you to search the tent of the brigand-captain at Brigands' Watch to find any correspondance from Sharkey that may divulge information about his plans.
Chief Watcher Grimbriar: 'More ill news. Orc-men? Could this be? This letter says it plainly enough.
'Sharkey has a legion of half-orcs loyal to him that he is sending to Andrath. I have doomed my men.'

The Flow of Goods

Bestowal dialogue

'If you are going into the heart of the brigands' encampment here in Bree-land, can you search for the goods they have stolen from the surrounding farms and from shipments along the roadways? While Bree is not suffering terribly at the moment, it is only a matter of time before the current stores are empty.
'If the brigands continue their assaults then there will be no food, ale, anything to appease the Bree-fold, and then we will have much more to worry about.
'Will you not look for the stolen goods while in their camp?'

Background

Brigands attacking the farms and roadways of Bree-land have made off with many of the goods necessary to keep the town stocked.

Objective 1

Stolen goods are being kept by the brigands at Brigands' Watch.
Watcher Rosecane requested that you search Brigands' Watch for goods stolen from the roadways and farms of Bree-land.
Watcher Rosecane: 'Will you not search through Brigands' Watch for good stolen from local farms and the roadways surrounding Bree?'
Watcher Rosecane: 'This will do nicely. Bree is in dire need of new supplies, and this will do well to sate the populace.
'Without this, who is to know what terrible madness would have befallen the people of Bree? Here, we are indebted to your help.

Rogue's Gallery

Bestowal dialogue

'Now listen here. I am not going to invite the aid of those Rangers our of the wild. The Men of Bree are capable of defending their own lands from the threats they face, and we will not rely on strange folk for assistance.
'This information speaks of the captain who led the raid on Dogwood's Farm and his current location. We have a chance to strike a telling blow against these brigands and find out more about them.
'It appears that the leader established a camp within a thick copse of trees behind the knoll to the west. The knoll in question is to the south of Dogwood's Farm. Let us strike this blow for the Men of Bree-land.'

Background

Chief Grimbriar wants you to deal a significant blow to the brigands' leadership in Bree-land.

Objective 1

  • Collect the notes and return them to Chief Watcher Grimbriar
The brigand leader is encamped in a copse of trees to the west of Grimbriar's post. Grimbriar awaits your return at his post at the stone house near the crossroads of Bree.
Grimbriar's spy provided information on the location of the brigand leader responsible for the latest attacks on the farms of Bree-land. Grimbriar then asked you strike a blow against the brigands and obtain any information you could from the leader.
Chief Watcher Grimbriar: 'Have you found anything of importance yet? We need to know why the brigands are amassing at the Vale of Andrath and the brigand-leader has that information.'
Collected the Brigand's Note
Chief Watcher Grimbriar: 'We have them now. This information proves that this Sharkey fellow is intent on establishing a strong foothold here in Bree-land.
'It also tells us of their target encampment of outside of the Vale of Andrath, at a place west of here that they call the Brigand's Watch.
'The Brigand-captain there passes orders out to his lieutenants that come directly from Sharkey. If we can get these notes....'

A Spear at the Southern March

Bestowal dialogue

"Brigands and half-orcs from the south have been pressing upon the Greenway as of late, threatening the good folk of Bree-town. You have been enlisted to join the line of Wardens who march against these foes, for brigands possess a chaotic nature, and will not stand against such organized defence."

Background

You have agreed to join the line of Wardens defending the approach to Bree-town from a band of brigands approaching from the south.

Objective 1

Andrew Oakhurst is behind the line of Wardens south of Bree-town.
Warden Oakhurst is waiting to speak with you.
Andrew Oakhurst: 'I am glad you agreed to aid us, <name>, for there is a gap in our line, and I would have it filled.
'Speak with Toby Thorndyke, just ahead, and he will show you to your spot in the line.
'It is very important that you not abandon your place in the line once the attack begins! An organized defence is our best weapon against bands of brigands such as the one that approaches.'
Andrew Oakhurst says, "Take up your position next to Toby Thorndyke, <name>."

Objective 2

Toby Thorndyke is at your place in the line of Wardens defending Bree-town from attack from the south.
Toby Thorndyke: 'You are to be my ally in the defence, <name>? I am glad to hear it!
'I will show you the bounds of our position. You must not stray beyond these bounds during the attack, my friend! The line must not be compromised!'
  • Maintain your position in the line and defend Toby Thorndyke
Toby Thorndyke says, "We must hold our position in the line, <name>."
Toby Thorndyke says, "Our section of the line is from this tree..."
Toby Thorndyke says, "...to this stone."
Toby Thorndyke says, "A good Warden does not stray from his position in the line!"
Andrew Oakhurst says, "Prepare for battle!"
Toby Thorndyke says, "Keep the line, <name>!"
Toby Thorndyke says, "Maintain the line, Wardens!"
Toby Thorndyke says, "Steady! Do not abandon your places!"
Southern Ruffian says, "Run away! We cannot beat them!"
Southern Ruffian says, "A pox on these Wardens!"
Southern Ruffian says, "A pox on these Wardens!"
Toby Thorndyke says, "Hold the line, <name>!"
Toby Thorndyke says, "Hold, <name>! Do not let the line falter!"
The attack has been repelled

Objective 3

  • Talk to Andrew Oakhurst
Andrew Oakhurst is behind the line of Wardens south of Bree-town.
The attack has been successfully repelled, and you should speak now to Warden Oakhurst.
Andrew Oakhurst: 'Valiantly done, <name>! You have done us all a great service and are deserving of the highest praise for your role in holding the line!
'I'd like to see those brigands try this again; they thought that the ability to wield a blade would be enough to challenge a line of Wardens? Are they mad? They must be!'
Andrew Oakhurst: 'Let us return to Bree, <name>, and we will discuss some of the finer points of your performance during the attack.'

A Spear at the Southern March

Bestowal dialogue

'The spear is very often favoured by Wardens, <name>, but its art is not easily mastered. A skilled teacher is needed to get the most from such a weapon and to make use of its advanced techniques.
'Andrew Oakhurst of Bree often leads the Wardens of Bree-land in practice skirmishes aimed at improving their skills with the spear. You should speak to Warden Oakhurst at the West-gate of Bree-town if you wish to engage in one of these practices.'

Background

Wardens often favour the spear, and truly effective spear-use is something that must be taught by one who has used it often and well in many battles.

Objective 1

Andrew Oakhurst is by the West-gate of Bree.
You have been told to speak to Andrew Oakhurst about participating in the spear-training that he often runs for Wardens in Bree-land.
Warden Trainer: 'Andrew Oakhurst of Bree often leads the Wardens of Bree-land in practice skirmishes aimed at improving their skills with the spear. You should speak to Warden Oakhurst at the West-gate of Bree-town if you wish to engage in one of these practices.'
Andrew Oakhurst: 'You seek training to better your offensive skills, friend Warden? I have not prepared a practice skirmish.
'No, do not leave just yet! There is no practice skirmish because there is a very real threat that approaches from the south: a band of brigands has managed to obtain some level of organization, and prepares to attack Bree-town!
'You will receive no better training as a Warden than by passing through the crucible of battle, my friend. If you will join my line, I can personally assure that you will learn much of value.'

Objective 2

Andrew Oakhurst is at the West-gate of the town of Bree.
A band of brigands march on Bree from the south, and Andrew Oakhurst has asked you to join his line of Wardens in repelling them.
Andrew Oakhurst: 'Will you join my line, <name>? It will require discipline and toughness, but as a Warden these are characteristics you should already have!'
Complete the Instance: A Spear at the Southern March quest.

Objective 3

  • Talk to Andrew Oakhurst
Andrew Oakhurst is at the West-gate of Bree.
You have stood in the line that defended Bree from attack and should speak now with Warden Oakhurst.
Andrew Oakhurst: 'You performed admirably well, <name>, and are welcome on my line whenever you care to serve.
'I believe you will find the experience has given you a chance to refine your skills and test your discipline, a chance at which every Warden would rejoice!'

The Hunter's Path

The Hunter's Path
"A terrible and vicious wolf called Yellowfang stalks through the Old Forest, often ambushing travellers upon the Great East Road. The accomplished huntress Gytha Lainey is resolved to ridding the Forest of this savage threat...."

Background

Gytha Lainey has brought you into the Old Forest to challenge your skill as a hunter.

Objective 1

Yellowfang is somewhere within the Old Forest.
Gytha Lainey has tasked you with defeating Yellowfang, a deadly wolf that stalks the Old Forest. She warned you that Yellowfang is cunning, and you will need to devise some way to lure her out of hiding.
Gytha Lainey: 'Yellowfang is hiding somewhere within the Old Forest, but you will need to show some cunning of your own if you want to locate here, <name>.
'I will wait here for you to defeat the mighty wolf. If you are worthy of calling yourself a hunter, you should be able to do this deed.'
Defeated Yellowfang

Objective 2

Gytha Lainey is waiting for you somewhere in the Old Forest.
Gytha will be both pleased and surprised to know that you have defeated Yellowfang.
Gytha Lainey: 'Yellowfang is no more? I am surprised, <name>, but I have no reason to doubt your words. It could be that I misjudged your worth as a hunter.'
Gytha Lainey: 'I will lead the way back to Adso's camp, <name>, if you are ready to leave.'

The Hunter's Path

Bestowal dialogue

'Your aim is true and your eyes sharp, <name>, but your prey is still weak. You are not yet skilled enough to hold your own against the foes you need to face.
'I may know someone who can guide you. Gytha Lainey is a hunter of no small skill, and though she has little patience for the undeserving, if she feels you are worthy of the instruction, she will gladly teach you what she knows.
'Look for Gytha Lainey at Adso's Camp on the Great East Road, between Bree and Buckland.'

Background

For a true hunter, speed and precision are everything. A lack of one brings ill fortune. A lack of both brings disaster.

Objective 1

Gytha Lainey, a hunter of great skill, can be found in Bree-land at Adso's Camp on the road between Bree and Buckland.
You have been told to speak with Gytha Lainey for instruction in the art of the hunter.
Hunter Trainer: 'You can find Gytha Lainey at Adso's Camp on the road between Bree and Buckland.'
Gytha Lainey: 'You say you are a hunter, but what proof do you have that you have chosen the right calling? Perhaps you should have been a minstrel, like that Prescott fellow who sometimes sings of my doings. Or perhaps the calling of burglar would have suited you better, like the hobbit back there with his eyes on Adso's roast?
'Still you say you are worthy of calling yourself a hunter! I shall be the judge of that, then, for I have a challenge for you. A mighty wolf stalks among the fallen leaves of the Old Forest, but she displays unusual cunning for her kind and is a menace to those who stray from the paths.
'Speak with me if you are willing to undertake this challenge, and I will go with you into the forest. There will I judge your skill in bringing down the terrible Yellowfang.'

Objective 2

  • Journey with Gytha Lainey into the Old Forest
Gytha Lainey, a hunter of great skill, can be found in Bree-land at Adso's Camp on the Great East Road between Bree and Buckland.
Gytha is waiting to speak with you about journeying into the Old Forest.
Gytha Lainey: 'Are you ready to go? We will travel into the Old Forest, and I will judge your merit -- if you can defeat Yellowfang, you might be worthy of my teaching.
'Keep in your mind these two warnings, however. The Old Forest is a confusing place for the unwary, and it seems as if the trees move about when you are not looking. Even if you have journeyed beneath the canopy before, you might find that the paths are unknown to you now.
'And secondly, Yellowfang is no fool. She will not challenge you unless you can somehow draw her out of hiding. Your combat ability, as well as your skill at tracking, will be tested.'
Complete the Instance: The Hunter's Path quest.

Objective 3

  • Talk to Gytha Lainey
Gytha Lainey, a hunter of great skill, can be found in Bree-land at Adso's Camp, on the Great East Road between Bree and Buckland.
Gytha is waiting to speak with you about your victory over Yellowfang within the Old Forest.
Gytha Lainey: 'You surprised me, <name>. I did not believe you were capable of finding and defeating Yellowfang, and for that you have my apologies.
'You are a hunter of great promise, and I will teach you a technique you are already well on your way to learning on your own: the ability to more quickly let fly your arrows.'

Gondamon to Bree-town

Bestowal dialogue

'You've done good, <name>, but there's a whole wide world out there for you to explore. And if you want to start somewhere, Bree-town is as good as any place to start.
'Go east, until the Blue Mountains are far behind. It's a long journey so be sure to pack plenty of supplies. The Shire-folk may be able to offer you assistance on your travels.
'When you arrive in Bree, be sure and seek out the Mayor of the town. If there's work to be found, he'll know where to find it.'

Background

The time has come for you to venture beyond the mountains of Gondamon to find your fortune in the town of Bree.

Objective 1

Travel east from the Blue Mountains to the land called the Shire, then continue east along the road until you reach Bree-town.

Áskell: 'Bree-town lies far to the east, beyond the Shire. When you get there, you should speak with the mayor, Graeme Tenderlarch.'
Mayor Graeme Tenderlarch: 'From the Blue Mountains, you say? Well, friend, that must have been quite and adventure. Welcome to Bree!'

Building the Bree Homestead

Bestowal dialogue

'Excuse me a moment, but could I beg a favour of you? I have this work order for materials and labor over in the Bree community that I need delivered immediately to confirm our work dates with the purchaser. I know this isn't much notice, but I can pay you well for your trouble.
'I just need you to take this to Nan Henwood over by the gates of the community a little ways south-east of here, east of those old ruins.'

Background

Bree is a small town, but growing everyday due to the travellers coming up the Greenway from the South.

Sarabeth Lowbanks has asked you to deliver a work order confirmation to Nan Henwood.

Objective 2

Bill Twiggins is in the market square of the Bree homestead.
Nan Henwood has signed the work order and asked you to take it to Bill Twiggins.
Bill Twiggins: '(pending)
