Burying the Dead

Bestowal dialogue

'As we prepared for the Blackwold assault and stood at the defence of Archet, many of the good folks of this town perished, both within the gates and beyond.
'The battle was great, but in the end we defeated the brigands' onslaught. Some of the good men who were lost still remain unburied, but the people of this town have their hands full with their own great losses. It would be to our shame if those unburied bodies were dishonoured by wild beasts.
'I would ask this one last favour of you: seek out those poor men and grant them honour in death. Dirk Mudbrick fell at the sheep-farm south-west of Archet, Nate Whisperwood died defending the Hunter's Lodge, and Cal Sprigley's farmhand -- Wil Wheatley -- perished in battle just to the west of Bronwe's Folly.'

Background

While you were fighting through Archet, some of the good folk of this fair village perished during the assault.

Objective 1

Dirk Mudbrick's body can be found at the sheep-farm, south-west of Archet. Nate Whisperwood's body can be found near the Hunter's Lodge, east of Archet. The body of Wil Wheatley can be found just to the west of Bronwe's Folly, south of Archet.
Jon Brackenbrook has asked that you bury the remains of the fallen who perished in the Blackwold raid with honour.
Jon Brackenbrook: 'Dirk never made it out of the sheep-farm, Nate died just outside of the Hunter's lodge, and Wil Wheatley did just to the west of Bronwe's Folly.'
Buried Dirk Mudbrick's body
Buried Nate Whisperwood's body
Buried Wil Wheatley's body

Objective 2

Jon Brackenbrook can be found by the ruins of The Mad Badger Inn in Archet.
You should return to Jon Brackenbrook and let him know that you have buried the fallen as he asked.
Jon Brackenbrook: 'Good, it is done. Those men died bravely and deserved a proper burial. Once more, Archet is in your debt.
'Now, before you leave, there is something I must tell you. A queer man came through Archet while you were away, and I believe he was looking for you!'

A Threat from Spiders

Bestowal dialogue

'Don't worry about me, <name>. It's just a minor wound I got in the fighting.
'Now that the Brackenbrooks, father and son, have driven the Blackwolds away from Archet, perhaps these folk can get to living their lives as they once did. Word has reached me, though, that there's a new threat to be dealt with.
'A nearby farm has been overrun with spiders, and the folk there have retreated to Archet. My injury prevents me from dealing with the pests, but you have proven yourself a capable warrior and should have no trouble. Look for the farmer here in Archet. You may know him already...his name is Cal Sprigley.'

Background

Cal Sprigley's farm has been overrun by spiders. The farmer and his wife fled to Archet, leaving their belongings behind.

Objective 1

Cal Sprigley can be found north of the ruins of The Mad Badger Inn in Archet.
After spiders attacked his farm, Cal Sprigley and his wife fled to the safety of Archet. Atli Spider-bane has asked you to speak with the farmer.
Atli Spider-bane: 'Sprigley and his wife fled to Archet with what little he could carry from his farm. The spiders must have come upon them suddenly.'
Cal Sprigley: 'There we were, ready to stand our ground against them Blackwold villains, when these monstrous spiders come pouring up from the cellar in the middle of the night. It seems hardly fair!
'Still, if the Spider-bane sent you, it could be you'll be able to help us out. Our farm is due south of Bronwe's Folly. if you can recover my seed bag from the pens and my strongbox from the storage shed, we could make a new start of it. Oh, and my father's bow as well! Poor Henrywas trying to kill some of the spiders with it. He was a good hand but the spiders made quick work of the lad.
'Hurry back, if you can…though with all the spiders around my farm, I don't see how you will.'

Objective 2

  • Collect Sprigley's seed bag
  • Collect Sprigley's strongbox
  • Collect Sprigley's bow
Cal Sprigley's farm is south of Bronwe's Folly.
Cal Sprigley has asked you to go to his farm and recover his strongbox, seed sack, and bow. With these things, he might be able to make a fresh start.
Cal Sprigley: 'My farm is to the south of Bronwe's Folly, down the second eastward trail from the south road. The place is much changed now -- a wretched nest of spiders.'
Holly Sprigley: 'The spiders came up from the cellar in the night, and we had barely enough time to escape! Many of the farmhands weren't so lucky. We saw poor Henry trying to fight off the spiders in the side ard with Cal's bow.
'If you can recover that bow, out seed bag from the livestock pens, and my strongbox near the storage shed, we'll be mighty grateful.'

Objective 3

  • Bring the seed bag, bow, and strongbox to Cal Sprigley
Cal Sprigley and his wife await you north of the ruins of The Mad Badger Inn in Archet.
Cal and Holly Sprigley are waiting in Archet for the possessions you recovered from their spider-infested farm. You should return to them at once.
Holly Sprigley: 'I hope you can drive those horrible spiders off our land for good! We're decent, law-abiding folk and shouldn't have to put up with such troubles!'
Atli Spider-bane: 'You should bring Sprigley his belongings at once. Such possesions are nearly as important to a farmer as my axe is to me.'
Cal Sprigley: 'This is everything we asked for, all right: my seed bag, strongbox, and my father's trusty bow! I can't thank you enough, <name>, and I must beg your pardon for treating you so poorly earlier.
'Had I known what was to become of my farm, I would have heeded your advide and retreated to Archet at once, saving ourselves a great deal of trouble…and poor Henry his life.
'Still, I am glad we can make a new start. Tell the Spider-bane he has my thanks as well for sending you to us.'

At the Behest of Cardavor

Bestowal dialogue

'As I said, I am sorry to intrude upon your reflection, but perhaps you can speak with Cardavor in Celondim proper? He seems quite worried about something, and, from what I know of the tales of your bravery, you may be able to help him.
'You may find him by the piers, not far from here.'

Background

You were greeted by an Elf-maiden as you paused for reflection in Celondim.

Objective 1

Cardavor waits for you by the piers north of where Eilian keeps watch.
Cardavor, an Elf of Celondim, needs assistance with some matter. Perhaps you should speak with him.
Eilian: 'Did you speak to Cardavor yet? He seemed worried about something.'
Cardavor: 'Ah, hello there. We have not had time to get acquainted. My name is Cardavor. And you are...?'

At the Behest of Unnarr

Bestowal dialogue

'The Captain of the Guard, Unnarr, has been looking for you for an hour, at least. And, what's worse for you, he's already angry due to a guard having abandoned his post.
'You may find Unnar in Frerin's Court. If I were you, I would tread carefully around him.'

Background

You were greeted by the dwarf Skógi as you arrived at Thorin's Hall.

Objective 1

Unnarr is waiting for you in Frerin's Court.
Skógi told you to speak to Unnarr, the Captain of the Guard.
Skógi: 'Unnarr will have my beard if you're late. Get a move on…you don't want to keep him waiting.'
Guard-captain Unnarr: 'Good, you received my summons. At least someone knows their duty.
'Come now, we must speak of circumstances most dire and worrisome.'

A New Shine

Bestowal dialogue

'Hello there, friend. I was just thinking of all the things I've got to do and me here on duty.
'I've got my brother's armour to get polished. He'd do it himself, if he had a mind to, but I'm afraid Kalli does not have our family's sense of duty. He'll never earn his commander's respect; always being late, never diligent in his duties, always wearing his old, worn armour and filthy uniform.
'Perhaps you could be of some service to an old warrior. Could you bring this armour up to Brúni Stonehelm and have him polish it for me? Brúni's stands among the armour merchants of Thorin's Hall, where the canal runs through the mountain.'

Background

Halli has asked you to help him improve his brother's reputation in the guard by having his tarnished armour polished.

Objective 1

  • Bring the tarnished armour to Brúni
Brúni Stonehelm can be found among the armour merchants of Thorin's Hall, where the canal runs through the mountain.
Halli asks you to take his brother's armour to Brúni Stonehelm.
Halli Shimmershield: 'Have you not brought the armour to Brúni yet? Do not tarry; Kalli will need his armour shined bright to impress the commander!'
Brúni Stonehelm: 'What's this? I know that armour! That's Halli's, unless I miss my guess. I haven't the time to polish his armour again. I'm far too busy!
'I was supposed to go down to Noglond, the way-station to the south, and pick up the guards' damaged armour. No, I have no time to clean Halli's armour today. You will just have to leave it here, and I will see if I can get to it before next week. Unless...you can go down to Noglond and retrieve the guards' armour for me.'

Objective 2

In return for polishing Halli's armour, Brúni asks you to collect the damaged armour from the guards at Noglond, the way-station south of Thorin's Hall.
Brúni Stonehelm: 'The Noglond guards have got more damaged armour than that, and it's not going to drag itself up the mountain! If I have to go down there and get it I'll not be able to polish Halli's armour.'
Halli Shimmershield: 'Have you not brought the armour to Brúni yet? He's in the western hall with the other smiths, and Kalli will need his armour shined bright to impress the commander!'
Geitir: 'Brúni's got someone else to do his errands for him again, eh? Very well, here's my other armour. You might want to check with Olafr, too. His armour was torn up bad a few days ago back in a scuffle with some goblins.'
Óláfr: 'I've been waiting for Brúni to come down. We expected him the other day, but as usual, he put us off again! I've got a dent in my armour a hand a half long. Poxy goblin would have cut me shoulder to belly if not for that hunk of metal!'

Objective 3

Brúni is by the armour merchants in Thorin's Hall.
You should take the armour you collected to Brúni to be mended.
Geitir: 'I don't blame Brúni for not coming out of his nice warm forge up at Thorin's Halls. That's where I'd stay if I were him, not trapessing out here in the cold.'
Óláfr: 'Be sure to tell Brúni to replace that streap on the left side of my armour. He should have plenty of time up there at the forge.'
Halli Shimmershield: 'Have you not brought the armour to Brúni yet? He's in the merchant's area of Thorin's Hall, and Kalli will need his armour shined bright to impress the commander.'
Brúni Stonehelm: 'There you are. What's taken you so long? Let me see these...Thorin's beard! Have they been wrestling oliphaunts? I could forge two suits of armour in the time it will take me to hammer this out.'
The dwarf-smith looks up at you. 'Oh yes, here is the armour you wanted shined.'

Objective 4

Halli is in Frerin's Court, south of Thorin's Hall.
Brúni has given you Halli's armour, cleaned and polished, to return to its owner.
Brúni Stonehelm: 'Halli's going to want his armour back right away. Best you take it to him now. He's usually on duty down by the gate to the courtyard.'
Geitir: 'That's a handsome suit of armour, but it's not mine. If you're still running errands for Brúni, you'll want to ask him who that armour belongs to.'
Óláfr: 'I'd be surprised if Durin himself could fix my armour up nice as the set you've got there. You must have me mixed up with someone else. Check with Brúni at the forge to see who that armour belongs to.'
Halli Shimmershield: 'Aye, that's just the thing. Kalli will look sharp as an axe in this. The commander's sure to notice him now!'

Fish-tales

Bestowal dialogue

'At your service, <class>. Now that you have learned the ways of the fisherman, perhaps you could aid me in delivering a message to an old friend.
'I wish to inform Nokki of my latest catch, the largest I have ever seen and I daresay the largest ever caught in Ered Luin! It was enormous, I tell you -- nearly a stone in weight! A pity that I don't have proof of my catch, for after I had the beast in my bucket it made a mighty leap and escaped back into the channel.
'Go to Noglond and speak with Nokki. Tell him of my catch and see if he has caught any bigger.'

Background

Refkell is incredibly proud of his last catch and wishes to show it off to his friend.

Objective 1

Noglond is south of Thorin's Hall, south and east of the Vale of Thrain, along the road to the Low Lands.
Refkell has asked that you visit Nokki and tell him of his latest catch.
Refkell: 'Have you told Nokki my tale? he is at Nogland, south of Thorin's Hall, along the road to the Low Lands.'
Nokki: 'Another dish-tale from Rekfell? You are the third person this week to come from him with stories of a giant catch that managed to slip through his fingers.
'But never mind that. If you are in need of fishing supplies you will find no greater store of equipment to suit your needs anywhere else.'

Skorgrím's Tomb

Bestowal dialogue

"It would seem that Gormr and the Dourhands have allied themselves with evil fell spirits of Old, just as Skorgrím himself did long ago. Now Ivar the Bloodhand, a Gaunt-lord, threatens to sway the Dourhands to evil with the terrifying ritual about to take place in Skorgrím's Tomb...."

Background

The Dourhand dwarves hope to restore their long-dead leader, Skorgrím, to life. Alongside Dwalin, you have travelled to the tomb delved by the Dourhands for Skorgrím to put an end to their plans.

Objective 1

Accompany and defend Dwalin as you make your way into Skorgrím's tomb.
Dwalin: 'Can you sense it, <name>? There's evil in the air here! The last time I felt something like this was when I was crossing through Mirkwood all those years ago. We'll need to keep our wits sharp in here!
'Elrohir and the others are here to help, but we shouldn't delay too long, or we may miss our chance to stop whatever evil is happening here. We must go now! Are you ready?'
  • Follow Dwalin
Dwalin says, "Come along now."
Nos Grimsong says, "Charge!"
Dwalin says, "To the end of this hall! We must stop the Dourhands."
Dwalin says, "Gormr! You must stop this!"
Gormr Doursmith says, "Stop? Even as the Dourhands reclaim their glory? I think not!"
Gormr Doursmith says, "No more will Longbeards and Elves determine our fortunes!"
Gormr Doursmith says, "Skorgrím will return! Of course, you will not live to see it. Dourhands, kill them all."
Dwalin says, "Stand firm!"

Objective 2

  • Talk to Dwalin
Follow Dwalin to see if you can stop the resurrection.
Dwalin: 'I fear what Gormr has done. We may be too late, but Ivar is too powerful for us to storm the tomb directly. He will stop us if we try. We will need to find another way around.
'Elladan and Elrohir will go see if they can find an alternate path. We will head up these stairs and see if we can sneak around the side. Let's hurry!'
  • Follow Dwalin
Dwalin says, "I believe him. I'm not sure why, but I do. We will have to find a way around."
Elladan says, "We will look back here for another entrance!"
Elrohir says, "We will meet you there."
Dwalin says, "We are too late! The ritual has begun! Wait here."
Dwalin says, "Patience, there are too many for us to overcome. We must wait for the Elves."
Ivar the Blood-hand says, "It is time to bring back the great dwarf-lord! But first, sacrifices must be made!"
Gormr Doursmith says, "Sacrifices? What are you saying? Skorgrím must lead the Dourhands to glory."
Ivar the Blood-hand says, "There are more powerful forces awakening. It is not the Dourhands we mean to empower! Let us begin!"
Gormr Doursmith says, "Skorgrím will right this wrong...wait, what are you doing?"
Skorgrím says, "I have awoken."
Ivar the Blood-hand says, "Good. Then come with me, Skorgrím. We have much to discuss and forces gather that would stop us."
Skorgrím says, "I will follow you, Ivar. Let these dwarves handle the others."
Gormr Doursmith says, "I am betrayed! Stop now, Ivar! Skorgrím must stay and return us to our former glory."
Dwalin says, "I warned you, Gormr. Your action was folly from the beginning. The Dourhands are shamed."
Gormr Doursmith says, "It's the Longbeards and your love of Elves that shames us all! You will pay for this!"
Gormr Doursmith says, "For Skorgrím!"
Gormr Doursmith says, "Haaa!"
Gormr Doursmith says, "Worthless fool!"
(When Gormr falls)
Gormr Doursmith says, "I give my life...for Skorgrím!"
(When Gormr and his dwarves are defeated)
Dwalin says, "He was a base coward! Let us flee this place!"

Objective 3

  • Talk to Dwalin
Continue to defend Dwalin as you near your goal: the place where the ritual to restore Skorgrím is being performed!
Dwalin: 'We need to get out of here! We have made a significant blow to the Dourhands, even if we could not stop the ritual from taking place. Skorgrim will have to be dealt with another day.
'Quickly now, we must flee. Whatever Ivar has done, the place is coming down around us!'
  • Flee the tomb with Dwalin
Dwalin says, "We need to leave before this place becomes the Tomb of <name>!"
Dwalin says, "The main way is blocked. We must find the Elves and flee this tomb!"
Dwalin says, "Did you get lost, Elf? Skorgrím and Ivar have escaped!"
Elladan says, "The Dead lurk everywhere. It was no easy task reaching this landing."
Dwalin says, "The good news, at least, is that we have defeated Gormr and most of the Dourhands!"
Elladan says, "The Dead have subsided for a moment, but more will be here before much time passes."
Elrohir says, "We need to get through this door. Several Dourhands ran in here and barricaded themselves inside."
Dwalin says, "My axe will take care of that, no problem! Move aside!"
Dwalin says, "Stand back now!"
Dwalin says, "Let's go!"
Elladan says, "We will wait here and protect you. May we meet again."
Dwalin says, "You will meet your end here, cur!"
Dwalin says, "For the Longbeards!"

Objective 4

  • Talk to Dwalin
Having fled the halls, speak with Dwalin one more time.
Dwalin: 'Ah, even though we did not stop the Dourhands' plans, we have done well here this day, <name>. At the end of this day, Thorin's Hall shall be free of the Dourhands and all will know they are dwarves of no account.
The Dwarf Version:
'I wonder though, when will we see the effects of this day and the return of Skorgrím? I will be glad to have you in Thorin's Hall as one of my good and sturdy dwarves.
The Elf Version:
'I wonder though, when will we see the effects of this day and the return of Skorgrím? I hope that after you and your fellow Elves leave Thorin's Hall behind you, that you return and aid us. You have proven a valuable friend!
'Now, let us leave these halls behind us!'
Unified:
Dwalin: 'Are you ready to leave these halls, friend? I, for one, will be glad to put them behind me!'

Dogs of Death

Bestowal dialogue

'Have you seen the barrow-hounds nearby, good <race>? The other dwarves think they are just bleak wild dogs, but you and I know better. These are barghests!
'In my travels some years ago, I once happened upon the most forsaken place I have ever seen. Dread filled me, and my voice died, and all was cold. The dogs there were the very same as these black, mournful beasts, with their eyes full of death.
'Why have they come to replace the lynx and the wild auroch-herds that roamed here in Thorin's day? It does not make any sense. They must be driven off!'

Background

The barrow-dwelling dogs called "barghests" have taken over the lands in Thorin's Gate, implying the presence of much death nearby....

Objective 1

  • Defeat barghests in the snow-fields around Frerin's Court (0/4)
Barghests can be found in the sooty snow-fields around Frerin's Court.
You should defeat barghests, for they are a sign of an unnatural death in this valley that was once hale and fair.
Unnarr: 'Those dogs are a bad sign for any land. To see them in the fields around Frerin's Court fills my heart with dread.'

Objective 2

  • Talk to Unnarr in Frerin's Court
Unnarr is in Frerin's Court, standing among the other members of Dwalin's party.
You should speak with Unnarr and tell him of your success in driving off the evil barrow-hounds in Thorin's Gate.
Unnarr: 'Thank you, <name>! Those dogs chill my heart. You did a good deed for these lands by driving them back. Perhaps some day the lynx and aurochs will be able to return to these parts. Some day.
'I wonder why the wretched dogs settled here to begin with....'

Skorgrím's Tomb

Bestowal dialogue

'We cannot allow the Dourhands to resurrect their king with such foul sorcery, <name>. They have poisoned the mountains and soiled the lands of Thorin. Gormr's fall to corruption is unforgiveable!
'Come, let us journey to the tomb. The sons of Elrond are waiting. We will make a great stand against the Dourhands, and they will think twice before falling to greed again!'

Background

Dwalin has asked you to travel with him and join the sons of Elrond in Skorgrím's Tomb. The evil stirred by the Dourhands must be quelled before the heinous resurrection of Skorgrím can take place.

Objective 1

  • Talk to Dwalin
You should speak with him again when you are ready to leave.
Dwalin: 'The tomb's entrance lies in a deep crag east of here. I don't know what to expect once we get inside, so stay on your guard and be ready for anything.
'Are you ready to travel to the tomb?'
WARNING: This quest is the final quest in the Introduction. If you have any other quests underway you should complete them now, as those quests will no longer be available after the Introduction is completed.

Objective 2

  • Talk to Dwalin
Dwalin asked you to travel with him to Skorgrím's tomb and put an end to the Dourhands' mad schemes.
You should speak with him again when you are ready to leave.

Objective 3

Dwarf path

Skógi wishes to speak with you.
Two years have passed since the events in Skorgrím's tomb, but you have remained in the Blue Mountains to help the Longbeards reclaim their halls.
Skógi: '<name>! It's about time. There's an important task that you need to attend to, so pay attention!'

Elf path

Eilian wishes to speak with you.
Two years have passed since the events in Skorgrím's tomb, but you have remained in Ered Luin to help protect the Refuge of Duillond.
Eilian: 'Greetings, <name>. The sights of Celondim are a wonder to behold, are they not?
'I must intrude upon your reflection, though, with an important matter.'
