Dogs of Death

Bestowal dialogue

'Have you seen the barrow-hounds nearby, good <race>? The other dwarves think they are just bleak wild dogs, but you and I know better. These are barghests!
'In my travels some years ago, I once happened upon the most forsaken place I have ever seen. Dread filled me, and my voice died, and all was cold. The dogs there were the very same as these black, mournful beasts, with their eyes full of death.
'Why have they come to replace the lynx and the wild auroch-herds that roamed here in Thorin's day? It does not make any sense. They must be driven off!'

Background

The barrow-dwelling dogs called "barghests" have taken over the lands in Thorin's Gate, implying the presence of much death nearby....

Objective 1

  • Defeat barghests in the snow-fields around Frerin's Court (0/4)
Barghests can be found in the sooty snow-fields around Frerin's Court.
You should defeat barghests, for they are a sign of an unnatural death in this valley that was once hale and fair.
Unnarr: 'Those dogs are a bad sign for any land. To see them in the fields around Frerin's Court fills my heart with dread.'

Objective 2

  • Talk to Unnarr in Frerin's Court
Unnarr is in Frerin's Court, standing among the other members of Dwalin's party.
You should speak with Unnarr and tell him of your success in driving off the evil barrow-hounds in Thorin's Gate.
Unnarr: 'Thank you, <name>! Those dogs chill my heart. You did a good deed for these lands by driving them back. Perhaps some day the lynx and aurochs will be able to return to these parts. Some day.
'I wonder why the wretched dogs settled here to begin with....'

Skorgrím's Tomb

Bestowal dialogue

'We cannot allow the Dourhands to resurrect their king with such foul sorcery, <name>. They have poisoned the mountains and soiled the lands of Thorin. Gormr's fall to corruption is unforgiveable!
'Come, let us journey to the tomb. The sons of Elrond are waiting. We will make a great stand against the Dourhands, and they will think twice before falling to greed again!'

Background

Dwalin has asked you to travel with him and join the sons of Elrond in Skorgrím's Tomb. The evil stirred by the Dourhands must be quelled before the heinous resurrection of Skorgrím can take place.

Objective 1

  • Talk to Dwalin
You should speak with him again when you are ready to leave.
Dwalin: 'The tomb's entrance lies in a deep crag east of here. I don't know what to expect once we get inside, so stay on your guard and be ready for anything.
'Are you ready to travel to the tomb?'
WARNING: This quest is the final quest in the Introduction. If you have any other quests underway you should complete them now, as those quests will no longer be available after the Introduction is completed.

Objective 2

  • Talk to Dwalin
Dwalin asked you to travel with him to Skorgrím's tomb and put an end to the Dourhands' mad schemes.
You should speak with him again when you are ready to leave.

Objective 3

Dwarf path

Skógi wishes to speak with you.
Two years have passed since the events in Skorgrím's tomb, but you have remained in the Blue Mountains to help the Longbeards reclaim their halls.
Skógi: '<name>! It's about time. There's an important task that you need to attend to, so pay attention!'

Elf path

Eilian wishes to speak with you.
Two years have passed since the events in Skorgrím's tomb, but you have remained in Ered Luin to help protect the Refuge of Duillond.
Eilian: 'Greetings, <name>. The sights of Celondim are a wonder to behold, are they not?
'I must intrude upon your reflection, though, with an important matter.'

To Evade the Impending Doom

Bestowal dialogue

'These leaves can be crushed to make a powerful remedy. Do you smell the clear sap? It is the blood of the mountain, striving to cleanse itself of corruption.
'Take this phial, <name>...I have drained enough sap to save those dwarves. If we can rally them in time, our two parties should be able to rid Ered Luin of the horrible fate that awaits it.
'I will not stand idly by while these fair, clean lands are poisoned with death! Go well, my friend. Hopefully, I will see you again when we meet to put a stop to this madness.'

Background

Before Dwalin and the Longbeards can hope to join the Elves in stopping Gormr from allowing the fell-spirits to corrupt Ered Luin for good, the poisoned dwarves must be cured of their terrible sickness.

Objective 1

Dwalin stands by his sick dwarves in Frerin's Court, below the Mirkstone Tunnels.
You should bring Elrohir's remedy to Dwalin and tell him of the dire warnings of the fell spirit you encountered in the cave.
Elrohir: Go quickly to Dwalin, friend <class>! There is not much time. The only hope for saving this land is to stop Gormr from going through with his plans for tonight's ritual.'
Dwalin: 'Can this be? By what miracle do you return with a draught to cure my poor dwarves? You are a valuable friend to have, <name>!
'Please, don't let me get in your way. Go ahead and give that remedy to the sick dwarves.'
You should give the remedy to Dwalin's folk

Objective 2

  • Administer Elrohir's draught to Bogi
The sick dwarves are in Frerin's Court, huddled on the ground and dying from the poisonous spring from which they drank.
You should administer Elrohir's draught to the sick dwarves.
Dwalin: 'Bring the remedy to my folk.'
The healing effects are immediately apparent

Objective 3

  • Administer Elrohir's draught to Selur
The sick dwarves are in Frerin's Court, huddled on the ground and dying from the poisonous spring from which they drank.
You should administer Elrohir's draughte to the sick dwarves.
Dwalin: 'Bring the remedy to my folk.'
The healing effects are immediately apparent

Objective 4

  • Administer Elrohir's draught to Olin
The sick dwarves are in Frerin's Court, huddled on the ground and dying from the poisonous spring from which they drank.
You should administer Elrohir's draught to the sick dwarves.
Dwalin: 'Bring the remedy to my folk.'
The healing effects are immediately apparent

Objective 5

The sick dwarves are in Frerin's Court, huddled on the ground and dying from the poisonous spring from which they drank.
You should administer Elrohir's draught to the sick dwarves.
Dwalin: 'Bring the remedy to my folk.'
The healing effects are immediately apparent

Objective 6

  • Tell Dwalin that there is now hope for the dwarves of his party
Dwalin is in Frerin's Court at Thorin's Gate.
You should speak with Dwalin about how to proceed now that his dwarves have received a remedy.
Dwalin: 'Now that there is hope for the sick among my company, we can deal with the more pressing matter at hand. What is this nonsense about Gormr wishing to raise Skorgrím from the dead?
'Dead is dead, in my opinion. You can't bring someone back! It sounds like Gormr has gotten some bad ideas in his head, and Ered Luin has become corrupted in his hands. We'll take it back, <name>!'

Medicine of the Elves

Bestowal dialogue

'I believe there may be hope for the sick dwarves, <name>. When poisons seep into the land, oftentimes the land will strive to heal itself, much as our own bodies will fight infection. If you explore inside the mountain, you might find just such an event.
I believe that medicinal plants will grow inside, and those will help to cure the dwarves. But the source of the poison itself is yet to be discovered...though I have my suspicions.
I feel a powerful chill when I stand near this entrance to the mountain. I will stand guard here while you explore the cave.

Background

Elrohir has asked you to seek an herb within the caves of the Mirkstone Tunnels, as he believes the mountain will try in its own way to purge itself of the encroaching poisons.

Objective 1

It is possible that healing herbs may be found inside the cave behind Elrohir.
You should search the cave for herbs that grow to help to purge the poisons from the Mirkstone Tunnels.
Elrohir: 'I'll stand guard here, <name>. Go into the caves behind me and look for any wholesome-looking plants that grow.'

Objective 2

  • Examine the cave for what might be causing the blight of Ered Luin
There is surely a reason for the Dead to have encroached upon these parts, and this cave seems to be the source.
You should search the cave for the heart of the problems at Thorin's Gate.
A horrible feeling comes over you -- something approaches!
Evil Spirit says, "You cannot defeat us...."
Evil Spirit says, "Tonight the little dwarf-king shall walk again."
The fell spirit has evaporated, but the dread invoked by his word lingers....
Evil Spirit says, "But we are the ones who shall return to life!"

Objective 3

  • Bring the healing herbs to Elrohir
Elrohir is outside the Mirkstone Tunnels, guarding the entrance from the bloodthirsty Dourhands.
You should bring the herbs to Elrohir and tell him what you witnessed inside the caves.
Elrohir: 'Ah, you have collected pure herbs! You will be a hero to those dwarves, <name>. Tell me of what you saw in the cave while I mix a salve to help the sick.'

A Putrid Spring

Bestowal dialogue

'Mountain springs are always the purest of water, especially in these parts. Something must be causing the water to run foul.
'Will you explore the source of the river? Perhaps there will be evidence as to what caused the vile plague, because now we don't even know what it is that's making my poor dwarves sick.
'If we can make the river run clean again, I have hope for the animals and the snows here as well. Maybe Thorin's Hall won't be lost to sickness.'

Background

Putrid water flows from the Blue Mountains' spring from above Thorin's Hall, poisoning all creatures unfortunate enough to drink from it.

Objective 1

  • Defeat guards of the mountain path (0/4)
  • Explore the mountainside for the source of the poison
The mountain-path is north west of Frerin's Court in Ered Luin.
You should climb the mountain path and find the source of the befouled waters and fend off any guards of the corruption along the way.
Dwalin: 'Explore the source of the mountain's spring, <name>. You should walk up the mountain-path north-west of here and see what has tainted the water's source.'
An Elf stands atop the mountain path, and he looks very much like Elladan

Objective 2

  • Talk to Elrohir, the brother of Elladan
Elrohir of Rivendell, the other son of Elrond, stands outside the entrance to a cave on the mountain path.
You should speak with Elrohir of your errand for Dwalin and Elladan.
Elrohir: 'The dwarves with Dwalin drank from the river-water below, you say? That is ill tidings! The creatures here are transformed by plague and look as if they will die very soon.
'I came this way to scout for signs of my father's dream, but the grim dwarves here have kept me from getting much farther. Something evil stirs in that cave...can you feel it?'

A Plague at Thorin's Gate

Bestowal dialogue

'Look, look! All of these dwarves are sick -- dying, I think! I cannot do another thing until I figure out what we can do to help them.
'I don't even know what happened to make them ill. How can I hope to cure them if I don't know how they came by this plague?
'Those foul Dourhands have really let this place crumble. Thorin would be livid if he could see it now! Full of poison and death.'

Background

Dwalin, a loyal friend of the late Thorin Oakenshield, has come to assert Thorin's reign once again, but many of the dwarves in his party have fallen ill.

Objective 1

The dwarves of Dwalin's party came over the fields to the west of Frerin's Court when they arrived.
You should begin your search by following the road west to see if there is any evidence for the source of the plague that afflicts the dwarves.
Dwalin: 'Please hurry, <name>! Search wherever you can. These lads may not last another day….'
The flesh of this bear is already rancid, though it only just died
The soil has a foul odour and texture in this spot

Objective 2

  • Tell Dwalin about the source of the dwarves' sickness
Dwalin awaits word in Frerin's Court, east of the river where you examined the soil.
You should speak with Dwalin in Frerin's Court and let him know that the river itself seems poisoned by some sickly rot.
Dwalin: 'The soil along the river is foul, you say? So you think that the water that flows from the clean mountain springs is tainted by a putrid rot?
'And these bears -- look! The meat is rotted, even though they are fresh-killed. This must be what is taking hold of the dwarves in my party....
'Many of my dwarves stopped at the river to fill their flasks. No wonder they are sick! What can we do?'

An Uneasy Feeling

Bestowal dialogue

'Would you like to be here to witness the Ritual of Commemoration of our fallen king? As Steward of these halls, I welcome you to celebrate with us. It will not be long now...in fact, I believe the preparations begin tonight.
'What say you, <name>? Think on it, if you will. Return to me when you have decided. Just be sure you make the right decision! Ha ho ho.
'Run along now, friend. I've no more time for you. It will be a busy day for all my folk.'

Background

Gormr's words and hints have brought you nothing but uneasiness, and there is a tension in the air. It is time to seek Dwalin and see if the Elves and Longbeards may be united in their purposes.

Objective 1

  • Talk to Dwalin and tell him of Gormr's plans for the ritual
Dwalin is in Frerin's Court, in the very centre of the Thorin's Gate area.
Now would be a good time to consult Dwalin on Gormr's strange behaviour and sinister hints.
Gormr Doursmith: 'Does this mean you will be joining the Dourhands in the ritual tonight? No? Don't think too long, <race>. My patience wears ever thinner as I grow older.'

Dwarf version
Dwalin: 'Ah, <name>! Thank goodness you're back! Nos Grimsong sent me word that you were finding out what you could from the Elves that settled up near the ruins.'

Elf version
Dwalin: 'Ah, my good Elf. I bid you welcome, and I am at your service. Nos Grimsong sent me word that you would join us in friendship.

Dwarf and Elf
'You spoke to Gormr recently, did you? The traitor -- Skorgrím is not the king of Thorin's Hall! This place belongs to Thorin's line! I have too much on my plate for the nonsense of the Dourhands and their strange rituals.
'All my dwarves are ill since coming here. That is more pressing than Gormr's folly.

The Ritual Stones

Bestowal dialogue

Dwarf version

'Lord Gormr has told us that you were the one to first discover Skorgrím's body the day the Silver Deep Mine nearly collapsed, when Gormr took his Stewardship. This has earned you a small amount of favour with us, even though your party of Longbeards has come unbidden and unwelcome.
'We are having a commemoration of Skorgrím's many achievements as king of the Dourhands, but we need ritual stones, black as pitch. I was not able to find enough for everyone that plans to attend. They are a form of tribute to Skorgrím-king.
'You should make yourself useful and collect some more. They can be found in and around the Winterheight cave, north of here.'

Elf version

'Lord Gormr has told us that you were there when Skorgrím died at the hands of your peoples. We will not tolerate Elves in our land unless you help to pay retribution for what they have done.

Background

You have been asked to collect black stones for a ritual Gormr has planned for the commemoration of Skorgrím, king of the Dourhands of old, before their fall into obscurity.

Objective 1

  • Collect black stones for the Ritual of Commemoration (0/4)
The ritual stones can be found in and around the Rockbelly Pit, north of the Berghold at Thorin's Gate.
You should collect black stones for the commemorative ritual being prepared by the Dourhands.
Bjarni: 'The stones must be black as shadows. Nothing else will do. I believe you can find such stones in the Rockbelly Pit cave that overlooks this keep.'

Objective 2

  • Bring the ritual stones to Bjarni
Bjarni is at the Berghold in the southern area of Thorin's Gate.
You should speak with Bjarni and give him the black stones you have collected.

Dwarf version
Bjarni: 'These are the very stones we need. Not bad for a Longbeard! Lord Gormr was right -- you are not our enemy. Your loyalty to the Dourhands will not be forgotten, <class>.'

Elf version
Bjarni: 'These are the very stones we need. Not bad for an Elf! Your loyalty to the Dourhands will not be forgotten, <class>. You may soon earn our forgiveness for what your peoples did to our king.'

Shrine to the Fallen King

Bestowal dialogue

Dwarf version

'I'm afraid you have come here for nothing anyway, <name>. No one is to gain admittance to Skorgrím's Tomb. It is a sacred ground, and only descendants of Skorgrím -- that is, the Dourhands -- have leave to enter.
'You are more than welcome to pay your respects to our fallen king at his Shrine, which is just east of here, in the Rockbelly Pit. Skorgrím was a great king, after all, and deserves tribute.'

Elf version

'I'm afraid you have come here for nothing anyway, <name>. No one is to gain admittance to Skorgrím's Tomb. It is a sacred ground, and only descendants of Skorgrím -- that is, the Dourhands -- have leave to enter.
'You are more than welcome to pay your respects to our fallen king at his Shrine, which is just east of here, in the Rockbelly Pit. Skorgrím was a great king, after all, and deserves tribute. Was he not, Elf?'

Background

Gormr, Steward of Thorin's Hall and leader of the Dourhands who now inhabit it, will not grant you access to Skorgrím's Tomb. He has, however, given you leave to visit the shrine instead.

Objective 1

  • Defeat bats in the Rockbelly Pit (0/5)
Bats can be found in the Rockbelly Pit cave, which can be entered in the courtyard near the Berghold or from the overlooking Winterheight.
You should defeat bats in the Rockbelly Pit to ensure that the Shrine to Skorgrím remains clean.
Gormr Doursmith: 'Why do you waste your time talking to me? I have nothing more to say to you at present. You must do as I asked and get the bats out of our shrine if you wish to speak with me again.'

Objective 2

  • Visit the Shrine to Skorgrím in the Rockbelly Pit
The Shrine to Skorgrím is in the Rockbelly Pit.
You should visit the shrine to see what all the fuss over Skorgrím is about.
A menacing-looking statue has been raised to the likeness of the Dourhands' king of old

Objective 3

Gormr awaits you at the Berghold in Thorin's Gate.
You should return to Gormr after having completed the task he gave you.
Gormr Doursmith: 'So you walked in our shrine, did you? As you can see, the Dourhands' reverence of our fallen king is very great. The Longbeards and the Elves do not understand such loyalty, so this was perhaps a good lesson for you.
'But do not go away just yet. I'm sure we can think of more tasks to occupy you while you trespass, eh, <name>?'

Gormr, Steward of the Hall

Bestowal dialogue

Dwarf version

'I heard one of the guards here talking -- down yonder is Gormr, the Steward appointed by Thorin Oakenshield before he left. Gormr is the reason we have come, and the leader of this Dourhand rabble you see all over the place.
'You are the well-spoken one in our party, <name>. You might as well go speak with him and find out what he has done here...and why he has grown silent over the years.'

Elf version

'I heard one of the guards here talking -- down yonder is Gormr, the Steward appointed by Thorin before he left. Gormr is the reason we have come, and the leader of this Dourhand rabble you see all over the place.
'He harbours no love for Dwalin's folk, nor for those who once lived in Thorin's Hall, before the Dourhands took over. You might as well go speak with him, and find out what he has done here, and why he has grown silent over the years. Maybe he knows where that body you seek has got to.'

Background

The trail of flowers that grow near Skorgrím's corpse have led you to Gormr, the Steward of Thorin's Hall.

Objective 1

Gormr guards the door to the tomb at the Berghold, in the south of the Thorin's Gate area.
You should speak with Gormr and find out what you can about his initiatives as Steward of Thorin's Hall and why Skorgrím's body has been moved.
Tryggwi: 'Gormr should be here in this keep, though I don't know why anyone would want to spend his time in such a dreadful, forboding place….'

Dwarf version:
Gormr Doursmith: 'Is that <name>? It has been long indeed since last we met. I remember you: you were the dwarf that discovered Skorgrím's body the day I discovered the relics he sought. The Longbeards of Dwalins' party are not welcome here, but you...you I might allow, for your good deed.
'Do you like what I have done with the place? Welcome to Skorgrím's Tomb!'

Elf version:
Gormr Doursmith: 'I see an Elf, surely from that party that has come to settle on the outskirts of that gloomy Elf-town in the north. What do you want, Elf?
'You have come to Skorgrím's Tomb, but Skorgrím was an enemy of your people. Why should I talk to you?'

The Footprints of Blood

Bestowal dialogue

'A trail, <name>! Red flowers leading a trail through the snow...do you think these are the footprints of blood?
"Blood-red footsteps
Upon snow coloured black,
Where the Dour King walks
to take back his throne
and finish what was begun."
'We have black snow and the body of the Dour King has been moved, leaving the fell flowers as footprints. Something evil is at work here, and I am sure something evil was at work when he sought our relics for immortality.
'We must follow him again. My brother is scouting for signs as well -- seek him as you search.'

Background

Red flowers have grown around Skorgrím's crumbled grave and around the place where he fell. Elladan believes that the flowers could possibly be what Elrond saw as blood-red footprints in his dream and will lead to Skorgrím's body.

Objective 1

  • Explore the gate at the Silver Deep Mine's courtyard
The "Blood-red footsteps" begin at the Silver Deep Mine. Elladan suspects that they lead to wherever Skorgrím now lies.
You should follow the red flowers to their end, examining each for signs, for they grow where Skorgrím's corpse corrupted the land as he was moved over it.
Elladan: 'Head first to the Silver Deep Mine and be sure you follow the red flowers wherever they lead. Be careful, <name>! I suspect a great evil is afoot here.'
The trail of "Blood-red footsteps" begins at this spot

Objectives 2 to 5

The "Blood-red footsteps" begin at the Silver Deep Mine and grow along the road. Elladan suspects that they lead to wherever Skorgrím now lies.
You should follow the red flowers to their end, examining each for signs, for they grow where Skorgrím's corpse corrupted the land as he was moved over it.
You have found another flower along the trail

Objective 6

  • Follow the trail of red flowers down the road
The "Blood-red footsteps" begin at the Silver Deep Mine and grow along the road. Elladan suspects that they lead to wherever Skorgrím now lies.
You should follow the red flowers to their end, examining each for signs, for they grow where Skorgrím's corpse corrupted the land as he was moved over it.
The trail of flowers has led you to a dark dwarf-keep

Objective 7

An unfriendly-looking keep now stands before you.
You should scout the keep, for the trail indicates that Skorgrím's body may have been moved here.

Dwarf version
Tryggwi: '<name>! I did not expect to see you here. I asked to speak with the Steward, and the Dourhands directed me here. This was once a great storage-house of Thorin's...I don't think I like what the Dourhands have done with this place.'

Elf version
Tryggwi: 'Hail, Elf! I see that you are one of the company that arrived last night when we did. I wonder if we seek the same thing. I am here to find out what has become of Gormr. You seek Skorgrím, you say? The Dourhands are his descendants, but Skorgrím is long dead.
'I asked to speak with the Steward, and the Dourhands directed me here. This was once a great storage-house of Thorin's...I don't think I like what the Dourhands have done with the place.'

Where Skorgrím Sleeps

Bestowal dialogue

Drawf version

'You are the dwarf that discovered Skorgrím's body some years ago, are you not?
'It was the ruined cellar of Edhelion's library that you came upon, above which Skorgrím Dourhand fell to his doom after attacking my fair city.
'The mine is just down the mountainside from here. You should perhaps continue your search where it started, and see if his body lies preserved there still. For my part, I have no wish to look upon Skorgrím again.'

Elf version

'I have been told Skorgrím's body was discovered by Thorin's folk back when he inhabited this land, before his death.
'The dwarf-miners dug into the mountain and exposed the ruined cellars of Edhelion, and that is where the corpse lay perfectly preserved -- in the Silver Deep Mine.
'When Talagan brought the library down upon them both, they fell to their grave below. You could search for Skorgrím's body where last it was seen, if you seek it still. For my part, I have no wish to look upon Skorgrím again.

Background

The body of Skorgrím was last seen several years ago by dwarf-miners in the Silver Deep Mine, where the ruined cellars of Edhelion were found for the first time since its fall.

Objective 1

  • Defeat pests as you seek Skorgrím's body (0/4)
The Silver Deep Mine is west of the ruins of Edhelion, at the bottom of the stair-path leading down the Mountain.
You should follow the stairs down and enter the Silver Deep Mine to search for Skorgrím's body once again.
Dorongúr Whitethorn: 'The Silver Deep Mine is west of here, down the stairs that lead down the mountain-side. Inside that mine was where Skorgrím's body was discovered.'

Objective 2

  • Find the site where Skorgrím's body was found
The place where Skorgrím's body was discovered deep in the mine, where the sun touches the old ruined cellars of Edhelion.
You should seek Skorgrím's body once more to ensure that it does not walk as it did in Elrond's dream.
Skorgrím's body is gone, but the same strange flower as found in Edhelion grows at the site of his long grave

Objective 3

You have found the site of Skorgrím's body, but...the body is nowhere to be found. Instead, red flowers are in its place.
You should pick up one of the fell red flowers to bring to Elladan.
The flower has a poisonous, deathly look to it....

Objective 4

  • Bring the odious red flower to Elladan
Elladan awaits your return at the Edhelion Watch.
You should return to Elladan with the flower you collected from the site of Skorgrím's grave.
Elladan: 'That is a vile, little flower, and one I have not seen before. You say it grew where Skorgrím died, and where his body lay in death for all these years? Such magic is not common with dwarves....
'His body has been moved, though we do not know where. It seems that the flowers follow him in death. Perhaps they will lead to his new grave.'
