Outfitting the Defenders

Bestowal dialogue

'Goblins infest the narrow reaches of Rath Teraig, and stout-hearted dwarves keep the southern barricade against them. Their armour will fail before their spirits do, <name>, so we must do for them what we can!
'If you can ask a metalsmith to fashion bronze gloves and a bronze helm, then bring them to me, I will see that the staunch defenders of the barricade receive them.
'You will be paid for your trouble, of course, in coin and other small things, though given the importance of this task no one would presume to ask for payment.'

Background

Efi Plateshaper is eager to outfit the dwarves guarding the barricade to Rath Teraig and asked for your help collecting the necessary pieces of armour.

Objective 1

Efi Plateshaper is at Gondamon, in the Low-lands of Ered Luin.
Efi Plateshaper asked you to bring him bronze gloves and a bronze helm with which he can outfit the defenders of the barricade at Rath Teraig.
Collected bronze gloves
Collected bronze helm
Efi Plateshaper: 'Thank you for these, <name>. Take these coins and other items. I insist, even though the knowledge of the good you are doing for the defenders should be enough.'

Leggings for Gagi

Bestowal dialogue

'I don't know what the problem is, stranger. My father was a metalworker, and my father's father was a metalworker, but I do not seem to have inherited their skill with hammer and anvil. I do not know where it could have gone, for I have no brothers, but that skill certainly has avoided me!
'You see, I decided it was time to make a new pair of bronze leggings for myself, but I did something wrong with the heat of the fire and my hammer-blows and ended up with something more akin to a belt. A belt fused in on itself, with something like a sleeve on one end. I can't wear that! And I wouldn't wear it even if I could figure out how exactly to try it on!
'If you know a metalworker of even small skill, I'll pay you for some bronze leggings. I'll give you my leftover materials as well! And don't tell anyone about my...mishap...if you don't mind.'

Background

Gagi Cloudbrow tried to make himself some bronze leggings, but the event has been described as something of a disaster.

Objective 1

Gagi Cloudbrow is west of Frerin's Court.
Gagi Cloudbrow has asked you to procure for him some bronze leggings, because the pair he tried to make for himself turned out poorly, and in no way resembled the leggings for which he was trying.
'These will do very well, <name>! I don't understand how mine could have turned out so very differently, because they seem easy enough to make. I just don't understand.
'Here are the coins and materials I promised you. Take with them my thanks!'

Verity Tyne Has Lost Her Ring

Bestowal dialogue

'Are you a jeweller? Do you know one? I really need the services of a jeweller, for I have lost my wedding ring, and I need a replacement before my husband Barton gets back from the Forsaken Inn!
'I don't know where it's gone, but it must have just slipped off my finger. If you can bring me a glittering copper ring to replace it, I'd pay you for your trouble!
'Don't tell Barton I lost the ring! I can't believe I could be so careless!'

Background

Collected glittering copper ring
Verity Tyne: 'Thank you so much, <name>! This ring looks exactly like the ring I lost, and Barton will never know the difference!
'Take these coins and other small items, please! You've really helped me out!'

Nefi's New Setting

Bestowal dialogue

'I was a jeweller of no small skill some time ago, and though I have now put down my tools, the pieces I fashioned during my youth are still precious to me.
'It is thus with sadness that I report to you that one of the necklaces I crafted but a few years ago has lost its setting! It has been too long for me to fashion a replacement, but if you know a jeweller who could do so, I would appreciate it.
'Bring me a glittering copper necklace, and I will pay you a fair sum. I have a few small items as well, including some leftover gemstones, with which I would be willing to part.'

Background

Nefi Gemcutter has broken the setting of a necklace he once fashioned, and desires a replacement.

Objective 1

Nefi Gemcutter is along the road that approaches Thorin's Hall.
Nefi Gemcutter has asked you to bring him a glittering copper necklace to replace one he made during his own time as a jeweller.
Nefi Gemcutter: 'Were you planning on bringing me a glittering copper necklace or not?'
Collected a glittering copper necklace
Nefi Gemcutter: 'You have done as I asked, and brought to me a glittering copper necklace. I thank you for it and give to you these coins and materials!
'I must admit, however, that this necklace does not seem as special to me as the one I crafted with my own hands. Perhaps I will come to appreciate this one, but I had not expected to feel this way. That's a little strange, isn't it?
'Thank you for it, friend. I am sure it will feel differently in the morning.'

Gems for Guleneth

Bestowal dialogue

'I am a jeweller by interest and by trade, and I have a great many pieces in various states of completion. I could finish many of these pieces, but I am missing the gems needed for the final settings.
'If you know a jeweller with a ready supply, I will give you some coins for bringing to me three polished agates of suitable quality.
'Your assistance will be greatly appreciated, for I have already neglected these pieces for too long and am eager to complete them. I have one or two items that may be useful to you, and would happily trade them to you in exchange for the agates I need.'

Background

The jeweller Guleneth has asked you to bring him polished agates he can use in the pieces he makes.

Objective 1

Guleneth is at Celondim in Ered Luin.
Jeweller Guleneth has asked you to acquire three polished agates that he can use to complete some of the pieces he has left unfinished.
Guleneth: 'Without three polished agates, I cannot finish these pieces as I hoped to do.'
Collected polished agate (3/3)
Guleneth: 'These polished agates are just the sort for which I have been waiting, <name>, and I thank you for them!
'Take these coins and items with my well-wishes, for now I can finish the pieces I have kept too long undone!
'Perhaps when this affair is finished, I shall find a place on one of the White Ships and sail away into the West. I will need to think on it.'

The Maker's Hall

Bestowal dialogue

'Our struggles against the Dourhands and the goblins continue with great vigour, <name>, but we must also do what we can to better the craftsmanship of the goods created within the Blue Mountains!
'My friend Egil Oldbeard has greeted fledgling craftsmen for the past hundred and thirty years...it keeps him young, he says! You should speak with him in the Maker's Hall if you are interested in turning your eye towards the fashioning of goods or equipment.
'Go north up the steps into Thorin's Hall proper. Once inside, walk north past the great statue and pass into the next hall. Turn to the east when you are halfway across the floor and you will descend some more steps into the Maker's Hall. Old Egil will be pleased to speak with you!'

'He enjoys talking with prospective craftsmen and setting their feet on the path.'
Egil Oldbeard: 'Bogi sent you to me, I see. Good, good! It is always an honour to help guide fledgling craftsmen as they take the first steps of their art! Listen carefully, for my words are borne of experience! Look for the Master of Apprentices in the Maker's Hall...he walks about, supervising the goings-on. He can help you choose a vocation in which to specialize. A vocation is a bundle of three crafting professions with overlapping skills -- choose your vocation with care, because you will expend a great deal of time and energy improving your skill with the professions under its purview!
'Once the Master of Apprentices has welcomed you to your chosen vocation, be sure to speak with a Provisioner, such as the one that stays in the Maker's Hall. He can sell you the tools of your trade -- every Profession has its own tools, so be not over-shy with your coinpurse! The novices will be happy to sell you any recipes you might wish to have, though I can tell you now that you will already know how to make a thing or two.
'Equip the crafting tools you plan on using and find an appropriate facility -- the Maker's Hall has a forge, workbench, study and oven available for your use -- and begin practising your skills! You will advance in your chosen professions as you practice and seek out the teachings of others in the field. I hope you will become a skilled craftsman, <name>, and that it will bring profit to you and to the Blue Mountains! I will give you a few coins to get you started. Use them wisely and consider them an investment in your future as a skilled craftsman!'
