Blackwold Thieves

Bestowal dialogue

'Ahh yes! I remember. A scout returned a few hours ago and mentioned that there was an Applewood giving orders to the recruits. He then headed towards the Blackwold's main encampment in the ruins in the north most part of the Chetwood.
'If Applewood has the key, then we should set about getting it from him to aid those who have suffered so greatly at the Blackwold's hands. Be careful <name>, reports from near those ruins tell of a great sense of dread and dismay. You will need to be cautious if you are to attempt to find Applewood and obtain the key.
'When you find the key return to me and we shall see what good news we shall bring to the people of Archet and Combe.'

Background

Constable Sageford remembered that a scout mentioned hearing a Blackwold recruit heeding orders from Sergeant Applewood near the Blackwold main encampment. He has charged you with finding Applewood and recovering the key to the lockbox.

Objective 1

Applewood has been seen entering the Blackwold's main encampment in the northern most part of the Chetwood. Seek him out and obtain the key he stole from Rurik.
After learning that Rurik was guilty only of fear, Sageford recalled the name Rurik provided as being a Brigand within the main encampment of the Blackwold in the Chetwood.
Constable Sageford: 'If you can find Applewood within the Blackwold's main encampment, you should be able to recover Rurik's key, and then we can begin to restore the people's hope here in Combe and Archet.'

Objective 2

Constable Sageford can be found near the centre of Combe.
Having found and defeated Applewood, you took the key back from him. Now you should return to Constable Sageford.
Constable Sageford: 'You found it! Excellent work, and I can say that we are pleased that there is one less Brigand to worry about as well.
'Now, <name>, we can find what the brigands hid away within this chest. You have done a wonderful job, friend, and deserve this reward.'

Rurik Fennel, Locksmith

Bestowal dialogue

'Rurik is a locksmith here in Combe. You should show him that receipt and ask him why the brigands appear to be common patrons of his.
'It seems odd that Rurik would be involved, he's a quiet man who keeps to himself mostly. Still we need to investigate every lead carefully.
'You should find him outside his home on the road that runs south past The Comb and Wattle Inn.'

Background

After discovering a letter on the brigand supervisor at Old Bauman's farm, you delivered it to Constable Sageford to discover the identity of "R.F." is Rurik Fennel a locksmith in Combe. Sageford wants you to confront Rurik about his possible involvement with the Blackwolds.

Objective 1

Rurik Fennel, a local locksmith, lives on the road that runs south past The Comb and Wattle Inn in Combe.
Constable Sageford wants you to confront Rurik Fennel of the coincidences surrounding the Blackwold brigands and his name and initials appearing on their crates and letters they carry.
Constable Sageford: 'Make your way down the road that runs south past The Comb and Wattle Inn and confront Rurik about the letter and the strongbox you found.'
Rurik Fennel: 'Yes, my name is Rurik. Yes, I'm a locksmith. What is this about? One of my strongboxes -- recovered from a brigand? -- and a letter?
'I see...
'I had hoped that I saw the last of the Brigands. You must understand, I did not willingly help them. My business is keeping things locked away, so I do not often ask question of my customers.
'I filled an order for twenty strongboxes and upon completion was visited by the Blackwolds. One, a tough fellow, took my master key and threatened my life if I talked. One of the others with him called him Applewood.
'Please, tell the Constable that any aid was unwilling, and I only stayed silent because I feared for my life.'

Objective 2

Constable Sageford awaits news of Rurik's involvement near the centre of Combe.
Rurik Fennel appears to have been an unwitting and bullied pawn of the Blackwold.
Rurik Fennel: 'Please tell Constable Sageford that I did not aid the brigands purposefully. I do not know who Applewood is, but he has the master key to the strongboxes.'
Constable Sageford: 'While this doesn't help us get this box open and the valuables returned, it does speak well of Rurik. I feel badly that he felt as though we could not protect him, but with what happened to Archet, I understand his hesitation.
'Let me think a moment on the name he gave us. Scouts are coming and going at all times... one may have mentioned seeing this Applewood.'

Blackwold Valuables

Bestowal dialogue

'After the initial raids, when folk began fleeing for villages like Archet and Staddle, the Blackwolds found they could no longer rely only upon raids to support themselves. They seized Old Bauman's farm and began tilling the soil, though badly and without care for the land.
'The brigands at the farm must be under the supervision of some Blackwold leader, else they would fall to laziness. If you confront the Blackwolds' leader at the farm, you might be able to recover some of the valuables they have stolen. Old Bauman's farm is deep in the Chetwood, at the end of the eastward path.
'I would appreciate it if you could at least try. There are many folk who would benefit from the recovery of this treasure.'

Background

Constable Sageford has learned that the Blackwold brigands have been trying to support themselves by working a farm they seized deep in the Chetwood to the east of Combe.

Objective 1

  • Search for valuables
Old Bauman's farm is deep in the Chetwood, at the end of the eastward path.
Constable Sageford believes that if you confront the Blackwold's leader at Old Bauman's farm, you might be able to recover some of the valuables the Blackwolds have stolen.
You have found a receipt

Objective 2

Constable Sageford can be found near the town-centre in Combe, with his fellow constables.
Sageford sent you to confront the leader of the Blackwolds at Old Bauman's Farm. You found a receipt signed by a 'Rurik' on the Blackwold's body. Constable Sageford will want to know about this.
Constable Sageford: 'The farms north-east of Combe are sure to be under the watchful eye of some important Blackwold!'
Constable Sageford: 'What is this?
'Rurik? There's a Rurik Fennel living here in Combe. He's a...a locksmith! But why would he be aiding the Blackwolds, <name>? Rurik's house is south-west of here, just behind The Comb and Wattle.
'You had best have a talk with Rurik. I will be very interested to know why he's been locking boxes for the Blackwolds. Very interested, indeed.'

More Treasure

Bestowal dialogue

'I was talking to one of the other constables shortly before you returned, and it seems that he learned that some of the Blackwolds were keeoibg even more valuables in their camp in the ruins of northern Chetwood.
'With any luck, you might find a strongbox that's not locked. It's worth trying, anyway. There are so many people who need money to rebuild, and who better to take it from then the ones that stole it in the first place.'

Background

Constable Sageford believes there may be a second lockbox in the Blackwold's main camp in northern Chetwood.

Objective 1

Constable Sageford can be found near Combe town-centre.
Sageford sent you to the Blackwold Headquarters to find another strongbox. You should return to Sageford with the news of your success.
Constable Sageford: 'The Blackwolds are holed up in the ruins of northern Chetwood. If you can find another lockbox -- and it is unlocked -- we can distribute the valuables to the suffering people of the Chetwood.'
Collected Blackwold strongbox

Objective 2

Constable Sageford can be found near Combe town-centre.
Sageford sent you to the Blackwold Headquarters to find another strongbox. You should return to Sageford with the news of your success.
Constable Sageford: 'You found a strongbox! And...this one is locked as well. And do you see these scratches, right here on the lock? "R.F." just like on the other one.
'We need to get these strongboxes open, <name>.'

Unpaid Debts

Bestowal dialogue

'The Blackwold brigands are on the run, no question about it. They're trying to regroup at camps throughout the Chetwood, but they suffered a real defeat at Archet.
'The brigands fled their old encampment up by Archet carrying a large lockbox, bringing it to one of their smaller camps in the Chetwood, north-east of Combe. If we can get our hands on that lockbox, its contents could be used to help those who lost property to the Blackwolds. There are a number of watchfires along the road, so you'll need to find the right one.
'These villains have a great many debts to repay, <name>. If you can return with the lockbox, the folk around here will be better for it.'

Background

Now that the Blackwold brigands have been largely pushed out of Archet, Constable Sageford wants to redistribute their stolen goods to those who suffered at their hands.

Objective 1

The Blackwolds have many camps along the road east and north of Combe. Constable Sageford is in Combe.
Constable Sageford wants you to recover a brigand lockbox from one of the watchfires in the Chetwood. Its contents can then be used to reimburse those who lost property to the Blackwold.
Constable Sageford: 'The Blackwold watchfires along the road in the Chetwood are far to the east, beyond the lumber-camp. When you reach the fence at the guard-house on the hill, cut across the fields to the left and keep walking until you are beneath the trees.
'The lockbox is most likely still at one of the Blackwold watchfires.'
Constable Sageford: 'Ah, you have returned with the brigands' lockbox! Now let me see what's inside, and we can sell the valuables to support the survivors of the Blackwold raids throughout the area.
'Locked! I should have guessed as much. Well, until we can find the key, we won't have any luck with this. There seems to be some initials carved in the lock: "R.F." Most unusual.'
