'I've got the salve ready for you, my dear, whenever you're ready for it. But remember, it will only last a few minutes before it wears off, so you'd best hurry back and find a hive for Farmer Proudfoot!

'I expect you will find beehives in the woods south-east of Tuckborough. Find a big one for Polo and take it to him at his meadow nearby.

'Now, if you're carrying a delicate beehive around, you may not be able to fight off any bears or such that may be drawn to the hive, so tread carefully!'

Background

Polo Proudfoot needs new queens for his hives to replace the ones killed by the honey-bears.

Objective 1

• Find a wild hive before the salve dries
• Bring the wild hive to Polo Proudfoot

Farmer Proudfoot is guarding his hives in the meadow south-east of Tuckborough. The wild beehives you are looking for are in a bear-infested area further south-east past the meadow.

Farmer Proudfoot sent you to Gammer Boffin in Overhill to obtain some balm to keep off the bees, so you can collect a hive for him. Gammer Boffin warned you that the salve will not last long, so you will need to collect the hive as soon as possible and take it to Polo Proudfoot.

Gammer Boffin: 'You;d best be finding a new hive for Polo!'

Polo Proudfoot: 'You'd better hurry and find one of those wild beehives before that salve you've got dries out. Look to the south-east, among all the bears, and be careful!'

Objective 2

• Talk to Polo Proudfoot

Polo Proudfoot would like to take a moment to thank you for your efforts.

Polo Proudfoot: 'That new hive will do nicely. I'll just given the bees a while to get used to their new home.

'In the meantime, please take this reward -- you deserve it!'

A Salve for Stings

'Sorry to say, but I got more bee problems. You saved the one hive, but the queens in the others were killed by the bears, and I need new ones. But it isn't that simple.

'First of all, the wild hives are off in the woods to the south...that's right, where all them bears live in the first place. Second thing -- and we'll deal with it first -- those wild bees don't take kindly to being moved, so you'll need to protect yourself from their stings. Now Gammer Boffin up in Overhill, she's got some kind of balm that will protect you from stings, so you just go and get some of that salve from her.

'Overhill is almost due north of here, the other side of Hobbiton, so it's a ways off. Hurry back...I need those queens!'

Background

Farmer Polo Proudfoot needs new bee queens to replace the ones killed by bears. Before you can go hunting wild hives, you'll need to get a salve to protect yourself from bee stings.

Objective 1

• Talk to Gammer Boffin

Gammer Boffin is in Overhill, some considerable distance north of Tuckborough, on the other side of Hobbiton.

Before you can collect new queen-bees for Farmer Proudfoot, you will need to obtain the means to protect yourself from the stings of the wild bees. Proudfoot told you to get a special balm from Gammer Boffin.

Polo Proudfoot: 'Please talk to Gammer Boffin in Overhill about a salve for bee-stings.'

Gammer Boffin: 'Eh, what's that? Knees? You skinned your knee? Oh! Bees!

'Yes, yes, I can make a salve against stings. But I'll need some ingredients first. Find me four toad-stones from any of the toads arounf the Shire. Mind you, not all toads have got 'em. Eh? Where to find 'em? Well, one place is the bog. Look in the west side of Rushock Bog, west of here, beyond Hobbiton. Or if you like, you can find plenty of toads in the marsh just north of Frogmorton.

'Don't look so funny. The salve's no good without toad-stones!'

• Collect Toad-stones (0/4)
• Bring the toad-stones to Gammer Boffin

Toads can be found in Rushock Bog, west of Overhill, beyond Hobbiton, and also in the marsh just north of Frogmorton. Gammer Boffin is in Overhill, a town nestled in the Bindbole Wood.

Before you can hunt new queens for Farmer Proudfoot's hives, he sent you to Gammer Boffin to get some salve to protect you from the stings of the wild bees; however, Gammer Boffin does not have all the ingredients she needs to prepare the salve. She has asked you to collect some toad-stones for the salve.

Gammer Boffin: 'I need four toad-stones, or I won't be able to cure your knees. I mean, I need the stones for your salve for the bees! Rushock bog, to the west, or the Frogmoors north of Frogmorton...those places are sure to have toads.'

Gammer Boffin: 'Toad-stones! Such a terrible trouble to get them. Salve would be easier to make if not for the hunting, eh?'

Honey-bears

Bestowal dialogue

'Hallo there! I wonder if you can help me out for a few minutes. I've had problems with bears from the hills nearby raiding my beehives for honey. I need someone who isn't afraid of bears to fend them off and protect the hives.

'My hives are right over there. The bears have killed the bees in all the hives except the middle one. I have it closed right now to protect the bees, but they'll be in trouble soon if the hives aren't opened. If you'll help me, I'll open the hive, and I'm sure the bears will soon return.'

Background

Farmer Polo Proudfoot has had trouble with bears raiding his beehives and killing his bees.

Objective 1

• Protect Polo and fight off all the bears

Farmer Proudfoot closed his hives to protect his bees from marauding honey-bears, but they cannot be kept closed or harm will still come to his bees. He has asked you to fend off any bears that are drawn to the honey.

Polo Proudfoot says, "Here they are now!"

Polo Proudfoot says, "Oh no! There's more of them!"

Polo Proudfoot says, "Huzzah! You've defeated the bears!"

Objective 2

• Talk to Polo Proudfoot

Now that you've driven off the bears, talk to Polo Proudfoot again for your reward.

Polo Proudfoot: 'Ha! That was a sight to see! You did a good job with those bears, and you deserve a reward for your work!'
