Confront the Old Took

Bestowal dialogue

'I am simply at my wit's end! Nothing we have done has appeased the Old Took's ghost. I can think of nothing else to do. I will never have my library back. What to do, what to do....
'Wait...no, it's too terrible to ask! But I must have my library back. You have done so much for me already, but could I ask you to muster up your courage and face the Old Took's ghost yourself?
'With great caution, enter my library and perhaps -- since you have done so much to try and appease him -- the Old Took will grant you an audience. His presence seems to be strongest in the far corner of the room, by my small bookshelf. Do please be careful!'

Background

Nothing you have done for Adelard Took has appeared to have any effect whatsoever on the "ghost" in Adelard's library.

Objective 1

  • Confront the Old Took's ghost
  • Drive the squirrel from Adelard's library
The ghost's presence is strongest in the far corner of Adelard's library, near the small bookshelf.
After all else failed, Adelard Took has asked you to enter his library and confront the ghost of the Old Took.
Adelard Took: 'Please, my friend, confront the ghost of the Old Took in my library. Perhaps you can appease him!'
Small BookshelfAs you near the shelf, it starts to shake and shiver. Something is hiding behind the bookshelf!
You have driven the squirrel from Adelard's library

Objective 2

Adelard Took is outside the library in the Great Smials.
In confronting the "ghost" in Adelard Took's library, you discovered that it was nothing more than a squirrel hiding behind the bookcase. You should tell Adelard that it is safe to return to his library.
Adelard Took: 'A squirrel? It was nothing more than a...a foul, grey squirrel? Oh my, this is embarrassing. What will others think if they hear about this?
'Oh, I know what they'll say! They'll say I am as mad as old Bilbo. Dear, oh dear! Would it be too much to ask of you not to report this incident?
'I will be most pleased to put this business behind me! And to think of all the trouble I put you through. I am so sorry to have been such a bother!'

The Last of the Fireworks

Bestowal dialogue

'The ghost is still in my library! When will it leave me alone? You know, all this started when I was doing a bit of tidying up in there, sending a few things off to the Mathom-house, and such....
'I stumbled across an old rocket from the Old Took's last Midsummer's Eve party. Gandalf the Grey and he were great friends, you know, and Gandalf would bring the most splendid fireworks! Perhaps I upset the Old Took's ghost when I sent that rocket off to the Mathom-house? It could be that he wants to see it fired off!
'If we could get the rocket back and fire it, that might appease his ghost. Could you speak with Keeper Brombard Foxtail in Michel Delving and get it? The Mathom-house is up on a hill, north-west of the centre of Michel Delving. Once you have the crackers, could you fire them off at the Methel-stage in Bywater?'

The Mathom-house is up on a hill, north-west of the centre of Michel Delving. Once you have the crackers, could you fire them off at the Methel-stage in Bywater?'

Objective 1

Brombard Foxtail is at the Mathom-house in Michel Delving, far west of Tuckborough.
Adelard Took asked you to travel to the Mathom-house in Michel Delving and ask Keeper Foxtail for the fireworks rocket he had sent there.
Adelard Took: 'You need to travel to Michel Delving tothe Mathom-house, to retrieve the rocket that I sent there. I think that is what upset the Old Took's ghost!'
'If you can get that rocket and fire it off at the Methel-stage in Bywater, that might appease the ghost.'
Keeper Brombard Foxtail: 'Good day to you. So Adelard is looking for the rocket that he sent here?
'Well, yes I have it. In fact, I haven't had the chance to do anything with it yet, actually. A moment please....
'Ah, here you are! Be careful...although it is quite old, I would wager that since it was made by Gandalf the Grey it is still potent!'

Objective 2

The Methel-stage is on the southern side of the road heading west out of Bywater.
Adelard Took had asked you to fire the rocket off at the Methel-stage in Bywater in hopes that the sight of this last rocket will appease the Old Took's ghost.
Keeper Brombard Foxtail: 'Other than that fireworks rocket I gave you, I don't think Adelard has sent anything else over to the Mathom-house recently, at least nothing of note.
'If he is looking for something else, please let me know!'
Adelard Took: 'Wonderful, you've gotten the rocket from the Mathom-house. Now, please travel to the Methel-stage in Bywater and fire it off.
'I'll wager seeing that will appease the Old Took's ghost, and he'll leave my library in peace!'
You step onto the Methel-stage
You have set off the last of the rockets

Objective 3

Adelard Took can be found at the Great Smials in Tuckborough.
You should return to Adelard Took and let him know that you have done as he asked.
Keeper Brombard Foxtail: 'Other than that fireworks rocket I gave you, I don't think Adelard has sent anything else over to the Mathom-house recently, at least nothing of note.
'If he is looking for something else, please let me know!'
Adelard Took: 'Oh, I can tell by the smell of your clothes that you fired of the rocket. Wonderful!
'Surely this will appease the Old Took's ghost. I'm going to check in the library right now and make sure. I have a good feeling about this though, I'm sure this has appeased the ghost!'
Adelard Took says, "The Old Took's spirit has to be at rest now!"
Adelard Took says, "Oh dear... oh dear..."

The Old Took's Favourite

Bestowal dialogue

'Oh dear! The ghost is still troubling my library. In fact, the moment I took a step in, it raised such a racket that it gave me a terrible fright! I'm so a-flutter that I don't think I will be able to eat supper.
'Wait! Food! Like most hobbits, the Old Took had an affection for his vittles, especially spiced boar-ribs. I admit, I have a fondness for them myself. Perhaps if we prepare a plate of ribs for him, we can appease his ghost.
'Go speak with my niece, Edilina Proudfoot. Her hole is just east of the Great Smials and she is a marvelous cook. Don't tell her why we need the ribs, I don't want to start a panic!'

Background

With the ghost still troubling his library, Adelard has come up with another idea on how to appease the Old Took: food. The Old Took was known for his love of spiced boar ribs, and he thinks that if he presents a plate of the ribs to the ghost in the library, he will return to his rest.

Objective 1

Edilina Proudfoot's hole is east of the Great Smials.
Adelard sent you to ask his niece, Edilina Proudfoot, to prepare a plate of spiced boar ribs to appease the ghost of the Old Took, but warned you not to tell her the reason. He does not want to start a panic.
Adelard Took: 'Please go speak with my niece Edilina Proudfoot, here in Tuckborough. She's a marvelous cook and should be able to prepare a plate of boar-ribs for us. Then I can present them to the ghost in my library and appease the Old Took!'
Edilina Proudfoot: 'Oh, how is dear old Uncle Adelard? I don't see him nearly enough any more!
'So he wants some spiced boar-ribs, does he? Well I have the spices, but I lack the ribs. They are rather important to the dish, are they not? Ha!
'But don't you worry, there are plenty of boars roaming the hills east of Tuckborough. If you bring me some ribs, I will make the dish Uncle Adelard is after!'

Objective 2

Boars can be found in the hills east of Tuckborough. Edilina Proudfoot's home is just east of Tuckborough.
Edilina Proudfoot said she could make the spiced boar-ribs that Adelard wants to appease the ghost of the Old Took, but lacks the actual ribs. She asked you to bring her some ribs from the boars in the hills beyond Tuckborough.
Edilina Proudfoot: 'Do you have those ribs? There should be plenty of boars roaming the hills east of Tuckborough. I need just a few ribs to make that plate for Uncle Adelard.'
Edilina Proudfoot: 'Good, you've brought the ribs. Let me prepare them for you....
'Here you go. Tell Uncle Adelard to enjoy them, but if he eats too many he'll have to add a notch or two to his belt!'

Objective 3

Adelard Took is waiting at the Great Smials in Tuckborough.
After gathering the ribs Edilina Proudfoot needed, she cooked up a plate of spiced boar-ribs for you to give to Adelard Took. You should bring them to Adelard, so he can use them to try and appease the Old Took's ghost.
Edilina Proudfoot: 'You've got the ribs for Adelard, Bounder <name>. Please give them to him in the Great Smials, with my regards.'
Adelard Took: 'Ah, good, you have the ribs. And they do smell delicious! Edilina is quite the cook, isn't she?
'Well, I will place these in the library and hopefully they will appease the Old Took's ghost. Then I'll have some peace again!'
Adelard Took says, "Oh, these spiced ribs smell delicious!"
Adelard Took says, "Oh dear... oh dear..."

Ghost of the Old Took

Bestowal dialogue

'Oh thank goodness! I am in the sorriest of straits, but I must make you swear to tell no one else of my troubles. If others were to hear of it, there would surely be a panic in Tuckborough!
'My library is haunted! As difficult as it may be to believe, I think it is the ghost of the Old Took! I think the troubles darkening the Shire of late have disturbed him, like those bears over to the east of here...they were never so aggressive in his day!
'Wait, perhaps that is it! The Old Took was known for slaying a great bear in his time. If you could bring me the pelts of a few bears, maybe it will ease his spirit. It will show the Shire is still safe!'

Background

Adelard Took's library in the Great Smial is being troubled by a "spirit", which he believes is the ghost of the Old Took.

Objective 1

Bears can be found in the woods east of Tuckborough.
Adelard believes the ghost of the Old Took is upset by the troubles darkening the Shire of late, especially the recent aggressiveness of the bears. He has asked you to bring him a few bear pelts to prove to the Old Took that all is well in hand.
Adelard Took: 'Do you have those bear pelts? I simply have to have them if I'm to prove to the Old Took's ghost that the Shire is still safe.
'You can find the bears to the east of Tuckborough, in the woods.'
Adelard Took: 'Oh good, you've found the pelts! Now I'll just have to put them in the library, and the Old Took's ghost will be calmed, I'm sure of it. He'll go back to his rest, and I'll get my library back.
'Thank you!'
Adelard Took says, "These pelts will surely put the Old Took to rest!"
Adelard Took says, "Oh dear... oh dear..."
