Bandages for Callum

Bestowal dialogue

'He may not accept charity from me, his "sworn enemy," but I think I should try to help this Callum all the same.
'This wound of his, from the boar, most likely needs to be bandaged. To ward off infection and help the wound to heal, we should soak the bandages in an unguent of...let's see, what would be best?
'Prickly broom, I think. I already have the bandages, but I don't have the broom leaves. Could I ask you to help me once more and gather some prickly broom leaves from the bushes south-east of Budgeford, near to the Water?'

Background

Reading further in the journal, Wilimar has begun to sympathize with Callum, the Hillman who swore to kill him. Learning of Callum's hard-fought life in a realm far in the north, he has decided to aid Callum and help him with the wound he suffered from the wild boar.

Objective 1

Prickly broom grows along the Water, south-east of Budgeford.
Wilimar has decided to provide Callum with bandages for his wound, but to aid in his healing, he wants to soak the bandages in an unguent made from prickly broom leaves. He has asked you to gather these leaves for him.
Wilimar Bolger: 'There should be plenty of prickly broom bushes south-east of Budgeford, near the Water. Gather me some leaves from them, so that I can make the unguent I need for Callum's bandages.'

Objective 2

Wilimar Bolger can be found near his hole on the north-west side of Budgeford.
Wilimar has decided to provide Callum with bandages for his wound, but to aid in his healing, he wants to soak the bandages in an unguent made from prickly broom leaves. He has asked you to gather these leaves for him.
Wilimar Bolger: 'Ah, you have the leaves, please let me have them. This will only take a moment...
'Please take these bandages to Callum at his campsite on the far west side of the Frogmoors. Tell him he should change the bandages daily. There are enough here for seven days. Hopefully that will be enough to help him heal.
'Also, let him know that I hold no malice against him...and ask him to do the same for me!'
Collected bandages

Objective 3

Callum's camp is on the far west side of the Frogmoors, west of Budgeford.
With the prickly broom leaves you gathered, Wilimar was able to prepare an unguent in which to soak the bandages. In addition to giving the bandages to Callum, Wilimar has asked you to tell Callum that he holds no malice against him and hopes he will do the same.
Wilimar Bolger: 'Please take those bandages to Callum. Hopefully they will help him heal, and perhaps he will lose his malice towards me! His camp is west of here, near the far western edge of the Frogmoors.'
Callum : 'Bandages? From the little man? I...and this is not treachery of some sort? I...I am not sure what to say. I have hated this mark against my family for so long, I thought it would finally be erased if the little man was dead...but these are not the actions of an enemy....
'Should my anger be aimed at those who forced my ancestor into battle? Or should I lay the blame upon Fate and leave my anger behind? I have much to think upon.
'I thank you. This Wilimar has nothing to fear from me.'

The Menace Confronted

Bestowal dialogue

'Goodness, the author of this journal, Callum, has a dark past! It would seem the death of his ancestor to my ancestor at that great battle was a black mark on his family. They bore that mark for centuries.
'After a string of bad luck, which Callum blames on this mark, he decided to try and erase it by killing a descendant of the one who killed his ancestor. After years of tracking, he found the Shire...and me! The arrowhead that killed his ancestor was the one shot into my door.
'I think I know where you can find him. He describes where he has set his camp, and it sounds like it is west of here, on the far west side of the Frogmoors. You have to stop him!'

Background

By reading the reassembled journal, Wilimar has learned it was written by a Man named Callum. Callum's ancestor was killed in a great battle by Wilimar's ancestor, and the family has borne this death as a black mark for centuries. Callum has decided to erase the mark by coming to the Shire and killing a descendant of that hobbit.

Objective 1

Callum's campsite is on the far west side of the Frogmoors, west of Budgeford.
In light of the revelations gleaned from Callum's journal, Wilimar Bolger has asked you to go to Callum's camp and stop him from carrying out his intended revenge.
Wilimar Bolger: 'Please hurry, friend, and see if you can find this Callum. You just have to convince him to give up this mission of vengeance! According to his journal, he has camped west of Budgeford, on the western edge of the Frogmoors.'
Callum: 'So the wretched little man sent you to end my life, did he? I suppose it is only right. My life has been accursed because of the mark of dishonour upon my family.
'Do as you will. I have not the strength to defend myself, as you can see. When that rat-man found the arrow in his door, he raised an alarm. I was afraid of being found before I was ready, so I fled my hiding place. In my flight, though, I startled a boar, and the vile thing gored me.
'It is only a matter of time before I succumb to the wound. If you are not going to kill me, at least do me the service of telling that Wilimar that he has nothing to fear from me now. The tired years of my life are nearly spent....'

Objective 2

Wilimar Bolger can be found near his hole on the north-west side of Budgeford.
When you arrived at Callum's campsite, you found him wounded. Racked with pain, he told of how he had fled from his hiding place near Wilimar's home, only to startle a wild boar, which gored him. He feels that he will soon succumb to his wounds and told you to let Wilimar know he has nothing more to fear.
Callum: 'Why do you stand here? It is clear I pose no threat, and you obviously have no interest in ending my wretched life.
'Away with you! Tell the rat-man that he has nothing to fear from me. Vengeance will not be repaid today…'
Wilimar Bolger: 'Goodness, what a relief! And yet, I can't help but feel badly for this Callum.
'You see, I have read more of his journal, and his life was a truly pitiable one. The place where he lives, far in the north, seems to be a dark, hard-fought place. Nothing like the Shire, and he's not had much luck.
'I think he may deserve a bit of charity, if you would help me with this.'

A Few Pages Short

Bestowal dialogue

'Oh dear, this isn't good, not good at all. Many of the leaves of the journal are missing, as if it were shaken and torn by a beast. Look here, see the teeth marks?
'Goodness, those teeth marks might be from a wolf! I wonder if some of the beasts took the pages, perhaps to line their dens? Yes, yes, I know it sounds strange, but I've heard a tale or two of them doing such things.
'If you could, slay a few of the wolves east of here and see if they have any of the journal leaves. I seem to be missing about three leaves all told. Once I have all the pages, I should be able to see what the author of the journal was up to!'

Background

The journal you brought back to Wilimar Bolger was missing many of its leaves, thanks to being shaken and torn by some wild beasts.

Objective 1

Wolves can be found east of Budgeford.
Without the missing leaves, it will be impossible to determine who shot the arrow in Wilimar Bolger's door, nor why. Wilimar suspects that wolves tore the journal apart and has asked you to try to recover the leaves from them.
Wilimar Bolger: 'Have you found all of the missing journal leaves? It looks like wolves tore the journal apart, so slay the beasts you find near Budgeford and see if they are carrying any of the journal's leaves.
'The journal looks to be missing about three of its leaves, and I will need all three if I am to learn who is behind this arrow in my door and if they mean me harm!'
  • Bring the journal leaves to Wilimar Bolger
Wilimar Bolger: 'Marvelous, you've found them all. Thank you! Now to see what this means....
'Goodness, this is interesting...and distressing! I will need a moment more to read this, but it would appear the author of this journal was a man named "Callum." And the tale it tells is an astonishing one!
'As hard as it is to believe, it would seem a distant ancestor of mine slew one of his in a great battle! And, oh dear...he means to revenge himself upon me....'

The Veiled Menace

Bestowal dialogue

'I am in desperate need of your help! Look...look what I found stuck in my door this morning!
'Look at this! It is such a strange arrow. The head is certainly of hobbit-make, although very, very old. The arrow's shaft though bears a resemblance to those made by Big Folk. Why would someone do this? What does this mean?
'It looks like the arrow came from somewhere directly north of here, near the hedge-gate leading to the Greenfields. I'm too frightened to go over there -- who knows what is lurking there -- but could you go there for me and see what you can find?'

Background

When Wilimar Bolger woke up this morning, he found a threatening arrow stuck in the door of his home. The arrow's head was of hobbit-make, although very old, while the shaft looked like it was made by Men.

Objective 1

The arrow came from the area near the hedge-gate that leads to the Bridgefields, north of Wilimar Bolger's home.
Wilimar Bolger has asked you to search the place where he thinks the arrow came from, in hopes of finding some sign of the person who loosed it and what it might mean.
Wilimar Bolger: 'I think the arrow was loosed from somewhere north of here, not far from my home. I simply must know who shot this arrow and why!'
You spot a journal on the ground

Objective 2

Wilimar Bolger can be found near his hole on the north-west side of Budgeford.
In the area Wilimar Bolger asked you to search, you found an abandoned campsite and a journal. Perhaps this journal will contain some information helpful to Wilimar. You should take it back to him.
Collected journal
Wilimar Bolger: 'So you found this journal near the hedge-gate, did you? Well, hopefully it contains some clues as to who loosed that arrow into my door, and perhaps it will tell if he means me any harm!'
