The Plough and Stars

Bestowal dialogue

'Be welcome to The Plough and Stars! Stay a while and put your feet up! Try our famous Wooly-foot Stout!
'Good, isn't it? But let me tell you, I have a brewing problem you might be able to help me with. The Four Farthings Brewing-moot is coming up, and I want to make some of my best Wooly-foot Stout for the judging. But you see, I need my secret ingredient! I use powdered gypsum to take the bitter edge off the brew.
'Usually I order it from the quarry in Scary not far to the east of here, but it hasn't shown up. Can you please go to Scary and find out from old Wilcome Tunnely what happened to it? Much obliged to you!'

Background

Halson Tubwort, innkeeper of The Plough and Stars, is entering the Four Farthings Brewing-moot.

Objective 1

Wilcome Tunnelly is in Scary, east of Brockenborings. The Plough and Stars Inn is in Brockenborings, west of Scary.
Halson Tubwort of The Plough and Stars has sent you down to Scary to fetch a shipment of gypsum that has gone astray.
Halson Tubwort: 'Could you head down to Scary to talk to Wilcome about that gypsum?'
Wilcome Tunnelly: 'You've come from Halson? It's a sad story I have to tell, so just as well it's to you!
'I sent one of my men up to the old Plough with a cart to take that gypsum up for Halson and bring a few kegs back here, but he came back in panic!
'It seems he was waylaid by goblins just as he was almost at Brockenborings! To think, goblins in the Shire! He had to leave the cart behind and barely escaped. I told one of the Bounders here, but they haven't done anything yet.
'Maybe if you can find those goblins up around Brockenborings-way, you might find the cart carrying gypsum too. My man says the goblins seemed to be coming from the north, for what that's worth.'

Objective 2

The goblins who stole the gypsum cart came from the Scrag-dells north of Brockenborings.
It seems that goblins have the gypsum intended for The Plough and Stars, you should travel to their camp and search for the missing cart.
Wilcome Tunnelly: 'Did you get that gypsum from those goblins yet?'
Halson Tubwort: 'Oh, goblins got my gypsum? That's bad. Real bad. Don't suppose you can get it back from them, eh?'
Collected the powdered gypsum
Halson Tubwort: 'Oh, you had to fight goblins for this gypsum? That's above and beyond the call, my friend! You deserve some of my beer on the house for that!'

The Fate of Prunella Boffin

Bestowal dialogue

My Aunt Prunella is a reputable lady as you could hope to meet, but I'm worried that she might have done something a little reckless and could now be in terrible trouble! She'd been listening to that Tunnelly lass, and before you could say "goblins-in-the-Shire?", she'd gone off to see the creatures for herself!
I don't know what I'd do if my dear old Aunt actually finds goblins. Could you go look for her? Rumour has it that there are goblins in the north-west Greenfields.
Aunt Prunella had a pretty umbrella that she carried everywhere, even on sunnday days, so if you see a goblin with an umbrella, well...

Background

Fosco Boffin in Scary is worried about his aunt, a reputable hobbit named Prunella.

Objective 1

  • Find Aunt Prunella's umbrella
Goblins may be found in the north-west Greenfields. If one of them took Aunt Prunella's umbrella, it might be lying somewhere inside one of their camps.
You promised Fosco Boffin that you would look for his Aunt Prunella's umbrella. He fears that she ran afoul of goblins.
Fosco Boffin: 'Have you found Aunt Prunella's umbrella yet?'

Objective 2

Fosco Boffin is in Scary, near the centre of town.
You promised Fosco Boffin that you would look for his Aunt Prunella's umbrella. He fears that she ran afoul of goblins.
Fosco Boffin: 'Oh no! You found Aunt Prunella's umbrella! I was afraid that you might.
'My poor, old Auntie! She was a tough, old lady, but I used to visit her all the time. Once every few months, at least! She will be missed, by one and all, I just know it! Scary is poorer for her loss!'
Fosco Boffin says, "Oh, my poor Aunt Prunella! To think she'd meet her end at the hands of goblins!"
Daisy Bunce says, "Don't be silly. Prunella has been visiting me all day!"
Fosco Boffin says, "Er. What was I saying?"

Objective 3

  • Talk to Fosco Boffin
Fosco Boffin is in Scary, near the centre of town.
Fosco was distressed by your recovery of his Aunt Prunella's umbrella; however, a neighbour informed him that she had actually been visiting her all day, and that Prunella had lost her umbrella earlier in the day. Fosco motions you over.
Fosco Boffin: 'Good gracious me, it could be that I might have gotten ahead of myself. Well, it's good that the old lady is safe. I am terribly sorry for troubling you about this. Take these coins, and I'd appreciate it if you didn't go mentioning this to anyone.'

Restless Roost

Bestowal dialogue

'I don't know what's going on with the animals in the Shire lately, but here in Scary we've been having more than our share of troubles. There have always been bats roosting in dark places throughout the Shire, but hobbits know better than to go near them.
'Something has stirred up the bats, though, and they've begun coming out during the daytime! They've even started attacking folk on the outskirts of town! We can't have that, <name>, we can't have that at all!
'If you see any of the nasty creatures, I'd appreciate it if you could put an end to them. You'll find them especially to the south, in and around the Marish. I just wonder what's caused them to start attacking like this?'

Background

Something has driven the bats near Scary to swoop from their caves and attack hobbits on the outskirts of the town.

Objective 1

  • Defeat bats (0/8)
Prisca Underhill is at the entrance of Scary.
Prisca Underhill wants you to deal with the bats south of Scary which have become hostile, attacking even during the day.
Prisca Underhill: 'There are bats all around Scary these days, and especially to the south. There never used to be!'

Objective 2

Prisca Underhill is in Scary, near the entrance to town.
Prisca will be pleased to hear that you have done your part to alleviate the threat of the bats outside Scary.
Prisca Underhill: 'Thank you very much for you help, <name>! I don't know what it is that has driven these bats out of their caves, but whatever it is, it's not welcome here! The sooner it leaves, the better!
'Maybe it has already gone, and it's just a matter of time before the bats quiet down again? Oh, I hope so!'

Spiders in the Quarry

Bestowal dialogue

'The workers in the quarry broke through into a hidden chamber and released a swarm of spiders. I've never seen such monstrous creatures, and the beasts have taken over the whole quarry!
'I'm worried that the spiders might come out of the quarry and start spinning their webs in Scary itself! If there's anything you can do to remove the spiders from the quarry, it would be a great help.
'I don't want my home to become a spider's web...how would I get to the market?'

Background

The workers at the quarry in Scary have broken into a hidden chamber containing a nest of spiders, and the creatures have now overrun the whole quarry.

Objective 1

The spiders can be found all throughout the quarry and the cave they swarmed from, cut into the cliff-face by Scary.
Lily Proudfoot, worried that the spiders in the quarry might climb out of the rocky hole and take over her town, has asked you to kill off the creatures.
Lily Proudfoot: 'There are spiders all over the quarry, <name>. They're rather hard to miss!'

Objective 2

Lily Proudfoot is in Scary, looking out at the quarry.
Lily Proudfoot was afraid that the spiders that the quarrymen unearthed would overrun Scary and asked you to help clear the threat. She will be pleased to learn of your success.
Lily Proudfoot: 'Thank you, <name>! The spiders are showing no sign of leaving, but your efforts in the quarry surely won't hurt either!
'Still, I wonder if I should move to Budgeford? I've always gotten along well with the Bolgers...better than I have with spiders, at any rate!'

The Trouble With Harvest-flies

Bestowal dialogue

'It used to be that harvest-flies were just a nuisance. They'd chew on our crops and cause some damage, but you learned to live with them.
'Recently, though, the harvest-flies have gone so far as to attack hobbits in the Marish! I don't know what has them stirred up so, but whatever it is, I wish it hadn't!
'If you can deal with our harvest-fly problem, I'd really appreciate it, Bounder! I hear there's a whole nest of them on the Yale-height, a hill a fair piece to the south and east of Budgeford. It's not very far north-east of Woodhall. There are three old pillars atop the Yale-height, so it shouldn't be too hard to find.'

Background

Harvest flies are generally just a nuisance to the crops, but recently they have begun attacking hobbits in the Marish.

Objective 1

  • Defeat harvest-flies (0/10)
There is a nest of harvest-flies on the Yale-height a distance to the south and east of Budgeford, not far north-east of Woodhall. The hill is marked by three pillars at its pinnacle.
Bingo Bolger is disturbed by the increased aggression in the harvest-flies and has asked you to help deal with them.
Bingo Bolger: 'You can find harvest-flies all throughout the Marish, <name>, but especially on the Yale-height, south-west of Budgeford and north-east of Woodhall. There are three pillars on the crown of the hill, and you should be able to see it from a good distance. We'll all feel a little safer if you can get rid of some harvest-flies.'

Objective 2

Bingo Bolger is in Budgeford, by a pig pen on the lower slope of the town.
Bingo Bolger reported increased aggression among the harvest-flies in the Marish and asked you to deal with them. You should return to him with word of your success.
Bingo Bolger: 'Well, that's a relief, <name>. I don't know what's caused the harvest-flies to begin attacking people, and I don't think I want to know! I just want them to calm down and leave the good folk of the Marish alone!'

The Warg of Budgeford

Bestowal dialogue

'Even apart from his masters in Angmar, this Warg, Laugfût, is too dangerous to remain unhindered in this land. He has certainly asserted himself as the leader of the local wolf-pack, which means he has become an even greater threat.
'You should gather allies and seek him out among his pack. Put an end to this threat as quickly as possible. When the deed is done, you should speak with the hobbit, Linda Bolger.
'Laugfût will be a dangerous foe, but he cannot be allowed to remain so close to so many peaceful hobbits. He has already brought great fear to this land, and it is only the beginning of the harm he may cause.'

Background

Orthir, the Elf encamped above Woodhall, revealed that the large wolf was, in fact, one of the great and evil Wargs of Angmar.

Objective 1

Laugfût can be found among the wolf-pack in the ruins east of Budgeford, beyond Milo and Linda Bolger's farm.
Linda Bolger sent you to show the collar to the Elves at Woodhall. Orthir revealed the identity of the mysterious wolf -- Laugfût, a Warg of Angmar -- and asked you to confront and slay the Warg-chieftain.
Orthir: 'You will find Laugfût at the heart of his pack, east of the town of Budgeford. Whether he is still under the yoke of Angmar or not, he is too dangerous to remain in the Shire.'
Linda Bolger: 'You are going to slay the leader of those dreadful wolves? Good luck, <name> -- it won't be a moment too soon!'
Milo Bolger: 'That Elf called it a Warg, did you say? That sounds terribly unpleasant. You'd best be careful -- he's in those ruins, and he won't be happy to see you!'
Defeated Laugfût

Objective 2

Linda Bolger is in Budgeford, on the road furthest down the hill.
Orthir told you to speak with Linda Bolger after you had slain Laugfût. Linda will be pleased to know that the threat of the Warg has been removed.
Milo Bolger: 'Capital job, <name>! You have struck a real blow against those no-good wolves, and one they won't soon forget! Hurry back to Budgeford and tell my Linda the good news. She'll be delighted!'
Orthir: 'You have done very well, my friend, for the Warg is no more. Whether its masters come looking for it need not concern us today. Concentrate for now on the good you have brought to this place.'
Linda Bolger: 'You slew that great, evil-looking wolf? That is wonderful! I hope you will accept this small token of my gratitude -- it's not much, but I am certain that you have saved Budgeford and the Shire from a terrible fate!'

The Secret of the Collar

Bestowal dialogue

'They say that Elves sometimes pass through the Shire on their way to the White Towers or to the Sea, or so the old tales go, if you care for such things.
'My husband says he spoke with an Elf camped in the forest near Woodhall, to the south-west. They say Elves know a lot about old writing and such. Perhaps, if my Milo wasn't seeing things that weren't there, that Elf might be able to read the letters. Woodhall is south of Budgeford, and the Elf was supposedly camped on the hill overlooking the town.
'I hope he'll be able to help. I don't mind saying that I'm simply terrified of the wolves.'

Background

You found a collar inscribed with runes you cannot read, apparently buried by the unusually large wolf Linda Bolger saw the night the wolves ran through Budgeford.

Objective 1

An Elf may be camped near Woodhall, south of Budgeford.
Linda Bolger was confounded by your discovery of a collar where she had seen the great wolf. She was unable to read the letters on the collar, but thought that perhaps the Elf Milo thought he saw might be able to decipher them.
Collected the Rune-Inscribed Collar
Linda Bolger: 'If Milo wasn't seeing things that weren't there, that Elf up at Woodhall might be able to read the letters on this collar. Why don't you go take a look there?'
Milo Bolger: 'Yes, I saw an Elf on the hill above Woodhall, south of Budgeford. I hear Elves know all about letters. This Elf-fellow may be able to help.'
Orthir: 'Welcome, <race>, I am Orthir of Rivendell. It is not often that I entertain guests at this place. What is this that you would have me examine?
'These are evil letters, my friend, but I will read them if it brings understanding. The runes inscribed on the collar identify this creature as a great chieftain of wolves, a Warg of Angmar named Laugfût.
'If Laugfût has broken free of his collar, it is likely he thinks to serve himself rather than his former masters. I do not doubt that the Warg was sent forth on some evil errand, but now it seeks to cause some evil on its own behalf.'

Howling at Midnight

Bestowal dialogue

'A few nights agone, we heard a great ruckus. There were wolves fighting among themselves out at the old ruins! Nary a hobbit dared stray out of their holes all night. Soon after the racket died down, a good number of wolves charged through the town -- right down the middle of the street, if you believe it -- and disappeared off to the west.
'My wife, Linda, was caught outside when the wolves came through. None of them so much as looked at her! If you go back to Budgeford and talk to Linda, she might be able to figure out what's going on. The town's just west of here.
'These wolves have got me worried something terrible...someone's likely to get et!'

Background

According to Milo Bolger, the wolves in the ruins were heard fighting among themselves one night. When the fighting ended, a large number of wolves ran through Budgeford, but did no harm to anyone.

Objective 1

Linda Bolger is in Budgeford, on the road furthest down the hill.
Milo Bolger told you that his wife, Linda, had been caught outside when the wolves ran through Budgeford. He told you to go speak with her to learn more.
Milo Bolger: 'My wife, Linda, was in Budgeford when the wolves ran through. She'd be the best one to talk to about that.'
Linda Bolger: 'Milo told you about the wolves passing through Budgeford? I thought he might. Well, I was a short way out of town when I saw a huge wolf standing on a hilltop. It seemed to be digging in the soil of the hill with its great paws. Then it leaped down the hill and was gone.
'I started on my way home as fast as I could, but as I neared the edge of Budgeford, at least a dozen wolves came running right through the middle of town! I thought I was done for, but they just ran on, like I wasn't there at all!
'I think it might have something to do with the wolf I saw on the hilltop. It was the Yale-height, I'm sure of it. That's to the south-east of here, way down across Stock Road, not far northeast of Woodhall. The wolf was standing by the three pillars atop the hill. You might find something there.'

Objective 2

The Yale-height is a far distance south-east of Budgeford, beyond Stock Road, not far north-east of Woodhall. The hill is marked by three pillars atop its pinnacle.
Milo Bolger asked you to speak with his wife, Linda, about the strange encounter she had with the wolves in the middle of Budgeford. Linda did not have much more to reveal, other than to ask you to investigate the Yale-height, where she saw a large and evil-looking wolf digging in the soil on the night the wolves ran through Budgeford.
Linda Bolger: 'I saw that evil-looking wolf digging in the soil on a hilltop near here. You should see if you can discover what it was doing! The Yale-height is south-east of Budgeford, only a short distance north-east of Woodhall.'
Milo Bolger: 'My wife, Linda, saw something strange out on a hilltop the night the wolves ran through Budgeford. The Yale-height is south-east of Budgeford.'
Collected the Rune-Inscribed Collar

Objective 3

Linda Bolger is in Budgeford, on the road furthest down the hill.
Linda Bolger sent you to investigate the Yale-height, where she claimed to have seen a great, evil-looking wolf digging in the ground. During your search you discovered a strange, rune-inscribed collar. You should take the collar to Linda and see if it means anything to her.
Milo Bolger: 'You found something on the hilltop? You should go tell my wife, Linda, in Budgeford at once!'
Linda Bolger: 'You found this in the dirt on that hilltop? This is a collar, <name>! Who could possibly be strong enough to put a collar on a wolf like the one I saw that night, much less want to? And how strong must the wolf been to remove it?
'I can't read the letters that are inscribed on the collar, but they sure look unpleasant to me.'

A Taste for Pork

Bestowal dialogue

'Things are not good in Budgeford, <name>. A pack of wolves has made its way into the Shire, and there's talk that there might be more on the way. I'm worried that my farm will soon be attacked, but more than that -- all Shire-folk are threatened by the presence of these wolves.
'And I saw...well, it's probably not important. Nevermind.
'Anyway, I came into town looking for help, but you should go talk with my husband, Milo, back at our farm. Just head up the hill and cut east across the fields until you see our farm. Milo will probably be out behind the house, keeping an eye on the nearby ruins where the wolves have holed up.'

Background

Linda Bolger of Budgeford is worried about a pack of wolves that have invaded the Shire and fears her pig farm will soon be attacked.

Objective 1

Milo Bolger is at a farm east of Budgeford, keeping an eye on the wolves in the nearby ruins.
Linda Bolger came to Budgeford looking for someone to help with the wolf problem. She has asked you to speak with her husband, Milo.
Linda Bolger: 'My husband, Milo, is at our farm, up the hill and east of Budgeford, keepin an eye on the wolves. I know he'd appreciate your help.'
Milo Bolger: 'Any help is welcome, <name>, and I think we're going to need it. We hobbits of Budgeford aren't well-suited to dealing with wolves, and the thought of wolves again in the Shire is enough to freeze my blood as solid as the Brandywine during the Fell Winter.
'If you can thin the pack a bit, we might have a better chance of keeping them away from the town. You'll find them in those ruins out east of our farm.
'I hope you can manage it, friend -- there are a lot of pigs and hobbits in Budgeford, and I'm afraid these wolves would love to have either or both for dinner!'

Objective 2

  • Defeat wolves (0/8)
The wolves can be found east of Milo and Linda Bolger's farm, among the ruins.
Linda Bolger sent you to speak with her husband, Milo, in regards to the wolves that have entered the Shire. Milo asked you to thin the pack before they can become a greater threat.
Linda Bolger: 'Wolves have invaded the Marish! I hope you can do something about them.'
Milo Bolger: 'The wolves here are a real threat to not only Budgeford, but the rest of the Shire as well! The more of these evil beasts you can kill off, the better.'

Objective 3

  • Talk to Milo Bolger
Milo Bolger is keeping an eye on the wolves east of Budgeford.
Milo will be pleased to hear that you have reduced the number of wolves the hobbits of Budgeford will need to deal with.
Milo Bolger: 'Very good, <name>, very good! You have been a tremendous help. There's something queer about these wolves, and I've only begun to fill in the pieces.'

Many Happy Returns

Bestowal dialogue

'That Lobelia Sackville-Baggins has been telling everyone that she doesn't think she should give out presents at her birthday party, that she thinks it more reasonable that she should be receiving them. She needs learning, so I've been raising this toad to give her as a present. I've named the toad Lobelia, and she's proved quite as ornery as the original, if you take my meaning -- in fact she's grown to be quite enormous!
'Well, my Lobelia slipped loose today. She's too big and tough for me to deal with when she's upset, so I need someone to calm her down. Funny, though, she seems afraid of the other toads, so you might have to clear out a number of the toads in the marsh before Lobelia will show herself.
'If she does come out, she'll probably be directly north of the The Floating Log -- that section of the marsh is more familiar to her, I think, and she'll probably return there.'

Background

Milo Hornblower, irate at Lobelia's notion of receiving birthday presents instead of giving them out, has been raising a particularly vile, fat toad to bring her as a present.

Objective 1

Lobelia the toad is hiding among the hill-toads in the Frogmoors, the marsh just north of Frogmorton.
Milo Hornblower has asked you to clear out enough toads in the Frogmoors for Lobelia the Toad to show herself.
Milo Hornblower: 'Lobelia the Toad won't come out if there are lots of other toads around, <name>, so you'll want to clearn out some of the toads that are currently lurking in the Frogmoors.'

Objective 2

With enough toads cleared out, Lobelia the Toad should emerge somewhere in the Frogmoors, north of The Floating Log.
Milo Hornblower has asked you to subdue the wild toad he has named Lobelia.
Ribbit! Ribbit!
Scared Lobelia the Toad back to her cage

Objective 3

Milo Hornblower is waiting by The Floating Log in Frogmorton.
You should let Milo know of your success in capturing Lobelia the Toad.
Milo Hornblower: 'You certainly taught her a lesson! I wonder if I'll be able to keep Lobelia the Toad caged long enough to teach the real Lobelia a lesson as well. We'll see.
'Thanks for your help!'

The Floating Log

Bestowal dialogue

'Welcome to The Floating Log! I'm sure you'll be wanting a draught of my Toad's Tongue brew, won't you? Say, you're that one what's been helping folks around here, aren't you? Maybe you can help me out some too.
'You see, the Four Farthings Brewing-moot is coming up, and I want to win this year! So I'm going to need some of our famous hops from the fens here, Frog Hops we call 'em.
'Well, anyways, these hops grow around the Frog Marsh just north of here. I'm not sure what it is, but them old toads get mean when you pick the hops. Now I'm not one for warts you know, so I wonder if you'd be so kind as to pick a peck of Frog Hops for me? I'd be much obliged....'

Background

Ponto Hopsbloom, innkeeper of The Floating Log in Frogmorton, is entering the Four Farthings Brewing-moot.

Objective 1

Frog Hops grow in the marsh north of Frogmorton. The Floating Log Inn is in Frogmorton, south of the Frogmoors.
Ponto Hopsbloom has asked you to pick some Frog Hops for his famous beer.
Ponto Hopsbloom: 'What, no hops? No hops means no beer, you know!'
Ponto Hopsbloom: 'That's the frog hops you've got there all right! I hope the toads didn't bite! Of course, they ain't got no teeth, but they can lip you pretty fierce.'

Fate of the Black Rider

Bestowal dialogue

'Never fear! My hound, Veronica, will track down that "Black Rider" with just a sniff of his cloak. She's the best hunter in the Four Farthings! Maggot can talk up his Grip, Fang, and Wolf all he likes, but I'll stake Veronica against the pack of 'em!
'You just follow Veronica wherever she leads, and you'll see! She'll find that trespasser!'

Background

Odovacar Bolger is certain the mystery of the trespasser in black will soon be resolved.

Objective 1

  • Follow Veronica to the "Black Rider"
  • Follow Veronica
Odovacar Bolger has lent you the services of his hound, Veronica, to track down the mysterious "Black Rider". He told you to follow Veronica wherever she lead, and she would find the trespasser.
Odovacar Bolger: 'I want you to find out who has been maxquerading around my sties!'
VeronicaVeronica snuffles at the cloak, sniffs the air for a moment, and then yips excitedly.
Greta Fallohide says, "Down, Veronica! What's got into you?"
Veronica runs back to Odovacar

Objective 2

Greta Fallohide is in Budgeford.
Veronica has led you to Greta Fallohide. Could she be the mysterious "Black Rider?"
Greta Fallohide: 'What? What Black Rider? Me? Of all the absurd...! Oh, this black cloak...yes, I have seen it before. I sewed it!
'I sewed that cloak for my good-for-nothing nephew, Fogo. Little thanks I got from him, too. If you want to speak with him, he's likely at The Golden Perch in Stock, cadging drinks.
'I wondered what that cloak was for. he acted so mysteriously about it. I'll take it back, thank you very much, and you go have a word with Fogo.'

Objective 3

Fogo Fallohide can be found at The Golden Perch in Stock, south-east of Budgeford.
Odovacar's Bolger's hound, Veronica, led you to Greta Fallohide, who told you she made the cloak for her nephew, Fogo. Fogo Fallohide is very likely the "Black Rider". You should seek him out.
Greta Fallohide: 'You go talk to my good-for-nothing nephew, Fogo, and ask him what he's been up to. You're sure to find him cadging drinks at The Golden Perch, down Stock way.'
Odovacar Bolger: 'One of those Fallohides is behind the fright? Which one?'
Fogo Fallohide: 'Ah well, I guess you've found out my little secrets. We thought it would be so much fun!
'See, I met this fellow a few days ago, while I was drinking, called himself "The Chief" he did. He said he was an old friend of Odo's, wanted to play a little joke on him. Told me to get black cloak and gave me some money to haunt Odovacar's farm by night.
'Well now! Surely you don't think I meant any harm! I never! That Chief fellow? I haven't seen him since, come to think of it. At least I got some spare money for beer out of it. Oh, yes...I promise not to do it again. Those wolves almost got me! I won't be running around at night anymore, that's for sure!'

Objective 4

Odovacar Bolger can be found at his home in the centre of Budgeford north of his pig sties.
You should return to Odovacar Bolger and let him know what you learned about the "Black Rider."
Fogo Fallohide: 'You go tell old Odovacar that I didn't mean any harm by it -- I just thought it would be a funny joke! Odo's probably at his house in the centre of Budgeford, north of his pig sties.'
Greta Fallohide: 'Shame on Fogo for scaring Mr. Bolger's pigs!'
Odovacar Bolger: 'I suppose it wouldn't be right to report that fool to the Shirriffs. But I wonder who this "Chief" might be, and why would he want to play this terrible joke on me? You don't suppose...that Lotho...no!
'Well, there's no way to prove anything, I guess, but if Lotho wants to buy my farm, he's have a long wait, let me tell you! It will take a lot more than this little "joke" before I let go of my land!
'Thank you kindly, for all your work. You may just have saved me from doing something very foolish. Please accept this small reward for your work.'

Cloak of the Black Rider

Bestowal dialogue

'Cam Puddifoot just told me that one of his hands spotted that so-called Black Rider heading off to the east -- on foot, mind you. No horse in sight, not even a pony.
'Cam says he was seen running through some fields of his, being chased by some wolves. It's bad enough we have to deal with unwanted nuisances like these "Black Riders", but now we have to worry about wolves, too?
'If this fellow gets himself eaten by wolves, I'll never know what's going on here, so you'd best do something about it. Head off to Cam Puddifoot's fields, east of Budgeford, and look for any signs of that "Black Rider".'

Background

Odovacar Bolger has sent you to pursue the so-called Black Rider who has been stalking his pig sties by night.

Objective 1

  • Look for signs of the "Black Rider"
The "Black Rider" was seen in Cam Puddifoot's fields, east of Budgeford.
Odovacar Bolger told you that one of his neighbours, Cam Puddifoot, reported the Black Rider on his land, being chased by wolves. Odovacar has asked you to go look for the horseless "Rider".
Odovacar Bolger: 'I want you to find that black-robed chap and get to the bottom of this, <name>. he was seen being chased by wolves throgh Cam Puddifoot's fields, east of Budgeford.'

Objective 2

Odovacar Bolger is at his home up the hill in the centre of Budgeford.
Odovacar Bolger sent you to search Puddifoot's fields for signs of the Black Rider, but all you found was a ruined black cloak. You should bring the cloak back to Odovacar.
Odovacar Bolger: 'Ha! That's a hobbit-sized cloak all right. It must have got snagged when he was running away.
'Don't worry about losing his trail. We'll soon have him!'
