Stalker of Haudh Iarchith

Bestowal dialogue

'Deep within Haudh Iarchith there are said to be three creatures that haunt its depths. The first creature is a horrible spider named Gwigon. The second is a dark-water by the name of Umnen. Lastly is the kergrim named Marrow.
'If you are able to defeat one of these creatures, return to me, and I will spread word of your valour to all of the people of Bree-town.
'Haudh Iarchith lies to the west of Ost Gorthad in the southern Barrow-downs.'

Background

Broderic Willowmeade spoke of several vile ceatures which dwell in the depths of Haudh Iarchith in the Barrow-downs.

Objective 1

Haudh Iarchith is located west of Ost Gorthad in the southern Barrow-downs.
Broderic Willowmeade has asked you to travel deep within Haudh Iarchith and defeat either Gwinon the spider, Marrow the kergrim, or Umnen the dark-water.
Broderic Willowmeade: 'Hunt down the evil things which dwell within Haudh Methernil, The Barrow of Ringdor, The Barrow of Taradan, Hautham, and Haudh Taenthod and lay them to rest.'

Objective 2

Broderic Willowmeade can be found near the Hunting Lodge in the Haunted Alley in Bree.
You should return to Broderic Willowmeade with news of your success.
Broderic Willowmeade: 'You have done us all a great service by your deeds...your name will be spoken fondly throughout Bree.
'It will take me some time to spread word of your deeds. If you travel again to Haudh Methernil, The Barrow of Ringdor, The Barrow of Taradan, Hautham, and Haudh Taenthod, seek me out, as I may have another task for you to accomplish.'

Gathering the Shards

Bestowal dialogue

'Deep within the depths of Haudh Methernil, the barrow of Ringdor, the barrow of Taradan, Hautham, and Haudh Taenthod in the Barrow-downs, there are said to be foul creatures that stalk the halls. My hope is that if you choose to journey into the area, you might be able to recover shards of some of the statues and carvings on the creatures below.
'Would you be willing to travel into these barrows and attempt to recover these relics for me, <name>?
'The tombs are scattered wide across the Barrow-downs.'

Background

Deep within Haudh Methernil, The Barrow of Ringdor, The Barrow of Taradan, Hautham, and Haudh Taenthod it is rumoured that ancient texts can be found in the ruins below. However, it is also rumoured the fell creatures which inhabit the barrow might possess shards of the ancient script.

Objective 1

Haudh Methernil, The Barrow of Ringdor, The Barrow of Taradan, Hautham, and Haudh Taenthod are scattered across the northern Barrow-downs.
Broderic Willowmeade has asked you to travel to Haudh Methernil, The Barrow of Ringdor, The Barrow of Taradan, Hautham, and Haudh Taenthod and gather barrow-shards from the various creatures that patrol the halls.
Broderic Willowmeade: 'Bring me any rune-shards you find in Haudh Methernil, The Barrow of Ringdor, The Barrow of Taradan, Hautham, and Haudh Taenthod, and I will reward you!'

Objective 2

Broderic Willowmeade is at the Bree Hunting Lodge in Bree-town, east of the Barrow-downs.
You should bring the barrow-shards you recovered to Broderic Willowmeade.
Broderic Willowmeade: 'Thank you for bringing me these barrow-shards from the depths of the barrows. Hopefully, I will be able to collect quite a number of these, and perhaps reconstruct some of the tablets lost to the ages.
'It will take me some time to look over these shards.
'If you speak with me a bit later, I may need more of these shards to further my research.'

Barrow-treasure -- Introduction

Bestowal dialogue

'Greetings, <name>. I have been very interested in the doings here at the hunting lodge. It seems the only place here in Bree where people would even think about heading up to is the old Barrow-downs. Well, there I go talking before explaining. You see, I am quite interested in the place -- the Barrow-downs that is. Ancient cities, old kings, and treasure beyond imagining! My dad, Newbold, has told me such wonderful stories. It seems somehow he got quite a few pieces of old histories out of the Downs, though he never would tell me how.
'I have tasked every hunter who frequents this lodge to travel to the Barrow-downs and retrieve some of the Barrow-treasure, but it seems that none of them have the nerve. I keep asking Anglinn, but he never seems to leave eyeshot of the main gate, and those Rangers aren't the ones to be pushed, if you get my meaning. Anglinn seems to believe that the treasure of the underground barrows are some of the finest. He goes on and on about some curse lain on it...all a bunch of nonsense if you ask me.
'If you would travel to the Barrow-downs, find these barrows, and retrieve some of the old Barrow-treasures, you would be held in high regard, I'm sure.'

Background

It has long been a legend among the Bree-folk that great treasure still remains in the barrows of the Barrow-downs, but there are few among them with the courage to seek it.

Objective 1

Barrows are scattered throughout Northern and Southern Barrow-downs. Tad Leafcutter is at the Bree Hunting Lodge in Bree-town, east of the Barrow-downs.
Tad Leafcutter has asked you to search the barrows of the Barrow-downs and recover some of the Barrow-treasures which lie there.
Tad Leafcutter: 'You have returned without the Barrow-treasures? I had hoped you wouldn't be scared of some old bones in the hills….'
Tad Leafcutter: 'You have done it! Look here, <name> wasn't scared to go up into those old hills, ha!
'Don't mind the other hunters, they are all superstitious fools. They think the Barrow-downs are haunted, can you believe it!'

Turtle-shells

Bestowal dialogue

'Greetings, traveller. It seems as though you found yourself far away from the safety of Bree, which means that you are probably like myself and my friend here: adventurous spirits. We'd be out and about more if it weren't for those Orcs to the west. As it is, the safety of our camp seems to be more important than the money we could make by filling our bounties.
'Of course, if you are willing to assist us, we have some materials that we would happily part with should you want to help us.
'I am looking for turtle-shells to furnish the blacksmiths of Bree who often use them to create forms to fashion their shields from. You can find turtles all around the lake area here in northern Bree.'

Background

Walt Whitrose is collecting turtle shells to furnish to the Blacksmiths of Bree. Turtle-shells can be used as a good form for creating shields.

Objective 1

Turtles can be found surrounding the lakes and other bodies of water in the northern Bree-fields.
Walt Whitrose would like you to collect turtle-shells and return back to him behind the stones near the falls where the gorge meets the lakes.
Walt Whitrose: 'The turtles can certainly be a dangerous foe if you are not careful. Seek them out but watch your fingers.'
Walt Whitrose: 'These will do nicely. Now tell me, which of these fine rewards would you like to claim for your efforts?'

The Perfect Curl

Bestowal dialogue

'I came to the north to find tusks, a prized item for hunters throughout Bree. The tusks that I seek sit aside antlers within establishments to hang cloaks and overcoats upon. I have been tasked with collecting a good many of these, but the number of Orcs in the area, frankly, gives me pause to venture too far from our camp.
'You seem a bit more hardy than I, and I am willing to pay you for collecting the tusks which I need. Are you willing to help me?'

Background

Sage Hayseed asked that you collect perfect tusks from boars througout the northern Bree-fields to help her with the orders she is out there to fill.

Objective 1

Boars can be found in the northernmost Bree-fields.
Sage Hayseed has asked you to hunt boars for their tusks and return the tusks to her at the camp near the lakes in the north Bree-fields.
Sage Hayseed: 'You will find boars all over these lands. Hunt them for their tusks and return to me when you have several.
Sage Hayseed: 'These are perfect!
'I owe you a great deal, friend. Here, please take these and know that you have helped me greatly.'

Big Enough for Rugs

Bestowal dialogue

'Aside from boars, I was also hunting bears in an effort to collect massive hides that could be turned into rugs, wall hangings and blankets if need be.
'I will pay you handsomely for your assistance in collecting these for me.'

Background

Sage Hayseed is looking for bear-hides to make rugs with.

Objective 1

Bears can be found throughout the northern Bree-fields.
Sage Hayseed has asked you to collect bear-hides from the bears in the northern Bree-fields and surrounding areas and return them to her. She has offered to pay you a fair price for this effort.
Sage Hayseed: 'Bears roam all throughout these lands, and I am certain that you can find a good many hides with some effort.'
Sage Hayseed: 'These will do nicely and surely satisfy the order which I have. Thank you for all that you have done thus far, friend.'

Into the Woods

Bestowal dialogue

'I swear I seen it, though me neighbours say what I'm off me head. I was in the far north Chetwood near Nen Harn, all alone of course, and I saw something moving through the trees.
'No, that's not quite right. It appeared to me that the trees themselves was moving. Something big and terrible is in the woods, and I'm afraid of what it might be.
'There's a group of hunters who make their camp on the western edge of Nen Harn, I was up there delivering the missus' snapper soup and got me a bit lot -- that's when I saw it. When I found them, I told them what I seen, and I wonder if you could ask Walt Whitrose if he's seen the same?'

Background

The woods of Bree-land can be dark and mysterious. Some places are darker than others....

Objective 1

Walt Whitrose is camped within the ruins at the western edge of the lake known as Nen Harn.
Gil Sandheaver asked you to speak with Walt Whitrose about the strange thing he saw north of the Far Chetwood.
Gil Sandheaver: 'Well, what did Walt tell you?'
Walt Whitrose: 'Gil Sandheaver says what? Well, I'll not be denying that the Old Forest is a queer place -- and no matter what anyone tells you, the trees do move -- but I've never heard tell of any such in the Chetwood.
'Still, if Gil sent you here to talk with me then it is fair to think that he had himself quite a scare.'

Hengstacer Farm

Bestowal dialogue

'I must send you next to the north-east to speak with the owner of Hengstacer Farm. Recent events surrounding the farm have reached my ears and speak of a dwarf who has come under attack by Orcs while looking for assistance from the farmhands.
'If you are willing, head north-east and speak with Éogar, the owner of the farm.'

Background

A visiting dwarf at the Hengstacer Farm came under attack from some Orcs.

Objective 1

Hengstacer Farm lay north-east of Saeradan's Cabin, up the eastward road from the Old Greenway Fort.
Saeradan sent you to the Hengstacer Farm to investigate talk of Orcs.
Saeradan: 'You should speak at once with Éogar at the Hengstacer Farm.'
Éogar: 'Orcs? You sound like that foolish dwarf who was here not long ago. I will tell you the same that I told to him...talk to my farmhand, Cam Applewood.
'He is the one spreading the hay over there.'

Objective 2

Cam Applewood is at the Hengstacer Farm.
Éogar told you to speak with Cam Applewood, his farmhand.
Éogar: 'Cam will be the one who might help you. Speak with him.'
Cam Applewood: 'Are you here about our horses?'

Stolen Notes

Bestowal dialogue

'This is not good! In fact, it is downright terrible! All my work...gone! Just like that, quick as you please. Drat and double-drat!
'My notes are missing, and I'm absolutely certain that I placed them in my pack. There was a band of Tarkrîp Orcs from around Cirith Nur, west to northwest of here in the North Bree-fields, come sniffing around the ruins. That's why I left my pack behind in such a hurry.
'I'm in no shape to take on Orcs. I'm an explorer, not a warrior. Those notes mean everything to me. Could you please find them and return them to me?'

Background

Oddvarr's pack was recovered, but he is no better off. The notes he wrote down are missing, and he suspects that some Orcs made off with them.

Objective 1

Tarkrîp Orcs from around Cirith Nur, west to northwest of Oddvar in the North Bree-fields, have stolen Oddvar's precious notes.
Oddvarr's notes are missing, and he suspects the Tarkrîp Orcs ran off with them. One of the Orcs must have them, if you can only find which one.
Oddvarr: 'Drat and double-drat! I don't have time to re-write all those notes. If I don't get my original notes back, then I'll have to home empty-handed!'

Objective 2

  • Return Oddvarr's notes
Return to Oddvarr, south-east of Hengstacer.
You found Oddvarr's notes on the body of a slain Orc.
Oddvarr: 'Orcs! I hate Orcs. Why would they run off with my notes like that? I'll tell you why...just to get my beard in a snarl, I would say!
'Now that my notes are safe, I can continue my research. Lofar will be pleased to know that my work continues unabated.

The Forgetful Dwarf

Bestowal dialogue

'My name's Oddvarr of the Blue Mountains, and I'm here in Bree-land on very important business. The only problem is, I misplaced my pack.
'Now, I'm to investigate the old dwarf-ruins that are rumoured to exist here. I'm sure there are important discoveries to be made, and I'm the one to do it! I'm a famous explorer, you see.
'But I digress! If you could help me find that pack, I would be indebted to you. You start looking over yonder north, and I'll search this area and to the south. If you find anything, meet me back here!'

Background

You met an old dwarf named Oddvarr who seems a bit absent-minded. He is an explorer of some renown...or at least he says he is.

Objective 1

Oddvarr asked you to search the ruins to the north.
Oddvarr set his pack down somewhere in the area and cannot seem to remember where.
You see a pack

Objective 2

  • Retrieve Oddvarr's pack
You found Oddvarr's pack in some old ruins, north of where you spoke to Oddvarr.
Pack retrieved

Objective 3

  • Return Oddvarr's provisions
Oddvarr is by the haystacks south of the ruins where you found the pack.
You found Oddvarr's pack containing his much-needed provisions.
Oddvarr: 'Ah, there's my old pack! Thank you so much for returning it to me. I would be in a world of hurt if my notes....
'What? My notes are missing! Curse those Orcs! They must have thought they were valuable.'

Horses for Hire

Bestowal dialogue

'Hullo, there. If you're here about our horses, I'm afraid we don't loan them out to just anyone. These horses are built for speed, not heavy labour. In fact, that reminds me of something.
'A dwarf came to the farm and requested some horses. Not sure what he intended to do with them, but by the looks of him he needed some pack animals. I told him that our horses weren't for hire, and he left in a huff.
'Seemed a bit peculiar, he did not seem quite right in the head. If you have time, perhaps you can check up on the old fellow. I saw him wander off to the ruins south-east of here.'

Background

Cam Applewood works on a horse-farm called Hengstacer in the Bree-fields. He was approached by a dwarf who wanted to hire some horses for an expedition.

Objective 1

The old dwarf was last seen walking to the old ruins to the south-east.
Cam asked you to check up on an old dwarf who wanted to explore the ruins near Hengstacer.
Cam Applewood: 'If it's not out of your way, can you make sure that old dwarf isn't in trouble? He seemed a bit...queer in the head.'
Oddvarr: 'Who's that there? Oh, hello! Sorry about that. These old eyes aren't what they used to be. Do you have time to talk? I could use some help.'

Tad's Request

Bestowal dialogue

'Hello there. You look like just the type Tad has been looking for. Young Leafcutter has been seeking adventurers throughout Bree and has asked me to send them his way when I see them.
'If you would, go and visit Tad Leafcutter. He should be west of the South-gate here in Bree. Make sure you tell him I sent you; I don't get paid if they don't get sent by me.'

Background

Tad Leafcutter has asked for adventurers throughout Bree to come and speak with him.

Objective 1

Tad Leafcutter can be found outside the Bree Hunting Lodge west of the South-gate of Bree.
Tad Leafcutter has asked that adventurers in Bree come and speak with him.
Tad Leafcutter: 'Thomas Thistlewool sent you? Yes, yes, I will make sure he receives his coin, I have something much more important to discuss with you.
